The app was a bust for me, didn't load until 3:08 or so. I had the website up and got it ordered that way but got the "pending reservation" email. Still waiting to complete order.

For whatever reason every year I don't get in until after 12:05, but still haven't missed a launch day delivery, I guess it's just where I'm located

Apple Store app on my 7 Plus worked and was able to preorder a Verizon Space Gray 256GB at 3:05 EST with Nov. 3 delivery. A friend wanted me to order one for him as well, managed to get him T-Mobile silver 256GB via Apple's website, got confirmation at 3:13 EST delivery Ships: 2–3 weeks Delivers: Nov 17 - Nov 24. My iPad mini couldn't open the app for a few hours.

I kept killing and opening the App on my iPhone, and couldn't get in. By about 3:04 or 3:05 AM EDT, I switched to safari and went to apple.com and was able to place the order there, 256GB Silver Verizon, and have Nov 3rd delivery date. Received my email confirmation at 3:09 AM EDT

the app on the ipad pro worked, the iphone didn’t.

I almost stupidly closed it on the ipad as I was mindlessly opening and closing it. But luckily got my day 1 delivery

Really wished I could have done it through the app, was all ready there, and when I did it through the site I wasn't logged into my account, so this morning had to go in and link the order to my account. Not a big deal, but at 3 AM EDT, more than I could process LOL

For me, I didn't get into the iPhone app until 0:03 PST, but my iPad Pro let me in at 0:02 PST. I was freaking out because even though I updated and verified all my billing info during pre approval, it still listed the wrong credit card info. I didn't even get the option to use Apple Pay.... but luckily I still got 11/3 delivery for Space Grey 256GB AT&T.

I got in at 12:07 and was the IUP was done within 10secs lol the pre-approval is so good. Then I went back out to buy another one on ATT Next, got both with 11/3 delivery. I was surprised it lasted for awhile and server was actually not bad. This is through the Apple Store App.

Got in using the app at 3:02 and used Apple Pay. Got confirmation email at 3:05 for Nov. 03.
When I woke up I had an email from Apple that the CC transaction didn't go through. Got it cleared up. Posted details elsewhere. Issue was with CCs detecting transaction as fraud.

I got in around 3:05/6. Was a stressful few minutes.

Does anyone know why this happened?

It’s something of a recurring theme with Apple. God knows why, I struggle to believe a company of their size and stature couldn’t have servers to cope with it.
I sometimes wonder if they deliberately block certain ip ranges for short periods, rotating them, to give people a better chance of getting an order.

But in reality it’s probably just because their servers are getting hammered by hundreds of thousands of people at once. Maybe when they fully transition to their own server farms and stop relying on third parties things will improve.

I hurt my thumb i did so many double click, kill app, restarts. LOL I got in at about 3:08 am and got a nov 3 silver 256gb for the IUP.

The thing about IUP people is that we could ONLY use the app. I'm thinking Apple put aside a certain number of IUP phones based on pre order numbers. It wouldn't do for Apple to have almost no IUP customers get a phone.

That’s odd, what country are you in? In the UK we can use the website or the app. Of course we’re still limited to having to go to the Apple Store to complete the process.

With the iphone upgrade program you HAVE to use the app on the ACTUAL phone you are upgrading. If you go to the website it says go to your ph one and open the app to complete. IT's a bit of a hassle but SOOOOO much better than having to enter all kinds of info on pre order time and greatly lowers the risk of getting 404 errors and website errors and app errors etc.

I didn’t though. I joined the IUP last year for the iPhone 7+. This year for the X, when the AppStore app didn’t work for me I ran upstairs to my Mac, loaded up the website, clicked onto my account and there was an image of the iPhone X at the top of the page with a button underneath for me to reserve it.

So I clicked it and after two step verification, my iPhone was reserved for me to go and do the upgrade on launch day.

So I don’t know if it’s a regional thing, maybe just certain countries, but in the UK we can definitely use the website for the IUP.

Good to see people following my advice Apple Store App Best way to go. Most websites were killed by bots.

my Apple Store app wouldn't load for almost an hour and I was on an iphone, iPad and my gf's iPhone. I had to go through ATT's queue while constantly trying, got through there in about 10 min.

Same thing happened to me:

3:00 Eastern: started force-quitting/refreshing Apple Store app on iPhone and iPad.
3:05 Eastern: starting to panic after seeing Tweets that the store opened for some people. still continuing to refresh on my iPhone and iPad.
3:08 Eastern: store finally opened... but on my Mac. But because I'm IUP, it told me to use my phone to complete the order. 😡
3:10 Eastern: *finally* got in on my iPhone. By then shipping times had pushed to 2-3 weeks. There was still a couple Nov. 3 in-store pickup options available, but in the 10 seconds it took for me to checkout (no thanks to the app giving me occasional error messages), all the pickup options were gone so I settled for 2-3 weeks shipping.

I also heard from a coworker that turning off/on WiFi on his phone helped him get in. If there's anyone who's technical who might be able to explain why in theory that might work (or if it's just a coincidence), I'd love to hear!

I suppose if you switched WiFi off and loaded with cellular data you’d be getting routed through different servers with a different IP address. But just toggling it on/off, no idea, shouldn’t make a difference.

My wife could got into apple App Store at 3:03am ET but I could not get into until she almost finished her checking out process which has some shipping address problem. I was able to get into the Apple store app around 3:05am and checked out a few min later because of error messages. Fortunately both of us got 11/3 delivery date.

Was bad advice as later loading app store meant I missed launch day delivery. 2 to 3 weeks is not pleasing (although I know not the worst it could have been)
This is why I had both the app and website opened. But the app still let me in several minutes before the website did.

I couldnt get into the app until 2:10 (Chicago) shipping times were at 11/17-24 during that time so I decided to do in store pick up for one of the suburb stores on the launch day.

The Apple store on my iPhone was a fail, iPad Pro opened at 3:03, order confirmation email at 3:04. my iPhone app did not load until 10 minutes after. By that time all T-Mobile units were Nov 17 - Nov 24th.
