Thank you. I have a good summary that I made a good purchase on launch day. I feel vindicated by the YT crowd.

My MBA still sits in its box on my dining table.

why some video thumbnails frantically replicate this o_O

As usual Rene Ritchie has an intelligent take not focusing entirely on benchmarks and giving an idea of what the overall experience is like. This is where the single core performance shines giving everything a smooth snappy feel.

its not jealousy. It’s that people who don’t have much knowledge in general are putting out content designed primarily to draw attention to their channel. YouTubers feel a little like parasites riding on the side of a giant animal, just feeding off the work of that animal. Not really creating much value in and of themselves.

There ARE good YouTubers. I really like Dave2D, MKBHD is great too. But these newer YouTubers feel like they’re just trying to make a quick buck and live the “YouTube life”.

For me I’d rather read a review. So not big on the youtubers. A good reviewer IMO is one who doesn’t make it a business to be a reviewer. If that makes any sense. I’d rather read a professional photographer’s review of the new Mac for example.

BTW, I enjoy tech videos on YouTube as much as the next person, but who on earth is watching unboxing videos for these things which are almost identical on the outside to the previous ones? And who is managing to get 10 minutes out of these things!?

I don't hate them individually, but I hate that someone like Rene Ritchie has dumbed down his content, makes these stupid looking thumbnails all in search of more views on YouTube. It's where the platform has gone, sadly. I say this as someone that subscribes to YouTube Premium because there is still loads of good content, but most of these tech reviews have taken a nosedive in the past year or two.
You’re correct. He did not like my calling that out on Twitter, but I get it. Now will I watch? Not as much no.

I do not mind Justine for a giggle and preliminary video tests, but Dave Lee and Lisa Gade are my go to folks. Lisa may not get the views (a shame really), but she knows her stuff.

@ascender the strip tease like unboxing. 😉

I struggle with Dieter Bohn giving the Air a 9.5 while Nilay Patel gives the Pro only an 8.5. Unless they want to argue the low end MBP shouldn’t exist?

Two of Patel’s items in the bad column were # of ports and only 16GB RAM. He does know this is the low end MBP, right? He also said he had “hours of frustration” with the touchbar. Sounds hyperbolic to me. But throwing that comment in there I’m sure will generate more views/comments.

That's where I thought the review was going to go, but obviously not, which makes the points moot.

I really used to like his stuff, but I don't think he's suited to doing these rambling reaction videos - he's much better when doing scripted stuff. And I agree totally, there's been a dumbing-down from him or a big change in tone/content or something, but I've not enjoyed much of his stuff recently.

This topic has come up quite a few times in the last couple of days, but I do feel sorry for these guys trying to get the views and can see why we're seeing even more clickbait titles and thumbnails. Between that and the YouTube ads, I'm watching less and less on there.

Yeah it’s sad what Rene has had to do to build a business and get followers on YouTube. I wonder how successful it is for him.

Has anyone seen a video yet where they talk about the heat for the laptops? I have a MBP 15" 2013 and on the lap it can get real hot at times. I am curious to see the temp range with these new machines.
The Apple Insider video does. The Pro never got above 97 degrees in a render test, and was usually closer to 90.

They keep working, but usually lose access to OS upgrades much sooner than rev B of new Apple products. For example:

ipad 1: starting OS = iPhone OS 3.2
iPad 1: ending OS = iOS 5.x

iPad 2: starting OS = 4.3
iPad 2: ending OS = iOS 9.x

Coreduo MacBook: start OS = 10.4.6
Coreduo MacBook: end OS = 10.6.8

core2duo MacBook: start OS = 10.4.8
Core2duo MacBook: end OS = 10.7.5

The core2duo MacBook came out 5 months after the coreduo MacBook yet was able to move to Lion instead of being limited to Snow Leopard. This was when OS updates were 2-3 years apart as well.
The laptops aren't really a relevant comparison, because in those days there weren't yearly OS revisions. For example, Core 2 would be 2005 through 2011, according to the OSes you mention. However, many Core 2 Duos go farther than that, as well.

So excited for the Mac Mini M1. It seems M1 unified 8GB RAM easily translates to globally accepted 16GB. I guess the 16GB would translate into 32GB. So much about "the RAM on M1 is not enough".

Any non-video reviews, so far?

Edit: There they are... :)
Yes, thought I was the only one who still prefers to read a review that sit through 20mins of waffle!

CNET review was good. Reviewer talked video editing performance and compared value for all three M1 machines.
