Can anyone identify this snap-on wrist band in the iPhone 12 ad, 1 minute in? Seemed weirdly prominent, but no such accessory was announced. ?

Yeah I thought the same! On the products that you can buy, the two tiers of phones do not seem that differentiated from each other. My thought is maybe the iPhone 12 looks so good this year Apple might lose some 12 Pro sales, all OLED, all 5G etc. I Feel like pro-motion in the flagship devices might have given a little more differentiation & a bigger reason to spend more $$$. My X needs an upgrade & I'll probably just go for the standard model.

I see that the conversion rate gap Apple (Apple Tax) is using for AUD is worse than when I bought my XR
The apple tax then was 5% in 2018
This year it is 12%, come on Apple don't be such a scrooge.

Also I see claims of 2 time optical zoom on the iPhone 12.
Don't tell me they are saying that two lenses counts as 2x optical zoom, at least I hope not.
2 X optical zoom means optically zooming through 1x to 2X and everywhere in between.
If it is not optical between 1 and 2 times then that is digital zoom and the phone happens to have 2 lenses.

Big difference in styles between the iPhone and iPhone pro ads!

Also interesting to read in the small print at the end of the Pro ad that the Pro Max hasn't had FCC approval yet and can't even be offered for sale until it does have.

I'd guess it should just be a formality if the electronics are the same as the normal Pro, but then why didn't they both get approval at the same time?

Gotta admit: it's a pretty cool ad :D

I'm sticking to the 11 Pro this year, but I got to say despite being leaked to death it has some nice new features and "cool factor" indeed. 128GB starting model is also a good move, but I noticed it's only for Pro models? It wasn't without some corporate big talk again, like "OMG 10 bazillion computations per nanosecond" like anyone except Phil Schiller is interested in numbers for the sake of numbers.

There are some things I'd like to know from use in the wild:
- 4x increased glass toughness is awesome, what about scratchability? That's been way more of a daily issue and worry than high altitude drops.
- Durability of frame materials (5 slate might have been the best design ever, but those nicks and dents..)
- Hope the antenna lines on the frame do not risk another "holding it wrong" situation
- Battery life
- Retina XDR whatnot compared to 11 Pro displays?
- Magsafe performance and heat management on warmer days

Typical wishlist to be deferred to next year:
- TouchID wake button
- ProMotion
- KILL THE NOTCH WITH A SWINGING SLEDGEHAMMER THROW

Apple usually knocks it outta the park with their ads but that iPhone 12 ad felt a little dystopian for me. It’s just a bunch of people weirdly entranced by their screens. Feels like a departure from the feel-good vibes that have become a staple in Apple ads.

I'd say realistic. I prefer that to telekinetic highschoolers (FaceID) or arrogant tone-deaf highschoolers (what's a computer). My favourite ad of the last few years was the MKA Twigs HomePod videoclip, despite it being my least favourite product to date.

They say the screen still shows scratches at a level 6, with deeper grooves at a level 7...

I think it's a time to reevaluate which devices are presently most useful in the context of their features. Personally, I'm just hanging on to a 1st gen SE for now. For a start it has a fingerprint reader and mine's already very happy on iOS 14.2. There is no sign of 5G where I live and I'm not heading to any big cities any time soon. The camera in the SE is still good and 4k video is possible. By next year 5G might be more prevalent and Apple will have worked out how to stop it eating battery. 120Hz will also have arrived. Hey - the old SE also looks like iPhone 12! What's not to like?

2x five times better, faster, 60% more, now included on every model... Apple is a marketing machine. But honestly I think the mag safe/fast charging thing is a secret weapon.. one of those things you don't think you need until use it, then you don't know how you did without it. And the commercials are just money stealing propaganda that works on me every time... Great job Apple.

COVID actually made the iPhone 3% cheaper here in Germany. I am surprised they are giving the decrease of tax (19% down to 16%) to the customer and don’t keep it to themselves

Shame they didn’t put USB-C on the pro phones with all that power of the A14 the pro max could be an amazing video editing device but hampered by usb 2.0 speed transfer of external cards via lightning which is slow and wireless is also slow to transfer 4k files from go pro / drone across . Could have been a true pro workstation !

Still trying to figure out what the advantage of this new Magsafe is. You'll need both hands to remove the phone from the charger. Then why not use the Lightning cable and have faster charging than any inductive charger could provide?

My thoughts too. With my current QI charger I just pick up my phone and stick it in my pocket. With magsafe, I'm going to be picking it up without thinking, yanking the cable as the charger gets pulled off the back of my phone and drops to the floor, only to be saved by another yank on the cable.

I suspect Apple want to condition their users to not use the Lightning port anymore, so they can leave it out in one or two years. Then they will only have a physical Genius service port INSIDE of the phone, that only Apple and certified service providers can access. For fast charging, users will have to buy Apple magsafe chargers.

Thought the adds look good. The product updates look really strong this year....that said you're not going to get around a +25% price increase in the basic iPhone 12 (from the 11) especially during the pandemic. Would expect Apple to see sales drop for the 12 (from the 11) but we'll see.

Then there was the upcoming Belkin car vent magsafe adapter that Apple briefly showed...since I use a vent adapter with a magnet in my case, I can't use wireless charging and I thought having it all built in one unit would be cool, until I realized that I have to PLUG IN to get CarPlay, so really, what's the point of the Belkin adapter? Only a handful of new cars even have wireless CarPlay.
