The AW 5 was my first Watch. It’s still on my wrist, I decide based upon new features and my potential use of them. The 5 still feels great and I can’t say there’s anything dealbraking for me on the 6 or 7. Let’s see what the 8 brings.

Still using an AW series 4 without problems. Not missing too much the AOD and other features with series 5, 6 and 7 at the moment.
100% agree with this ☝?

I’m also still using my S4 and it is working fine (almost!). I am having some weird issue whereby heart readings during workouts sometimes don’t show up and/or are very erratic therefore I’ll probably upgrade to this years S8.

Agreed. If you have a series 5, the series 6 and 7 don't really bring much to the table.

Just replaced my Series 2 that works (minus the mic) today with a 45mm Nike version. They were $70 off so I went for it. I told myself I would upgrade when they add the blood glucose monitoring feature, but that looks like we are still many years away from that happening.

I is think a big chunk of the people I know with Apple watches have the Series 4. It still has good battery life, better than the series 5 and still looks up to date with its design. I think it goes to show this is a device that doesn’t command yearly upgrades and can be used for several years without many issues. I’m only planning to upgrade my Series 5 this year because the battery life is appalling. My wife’s series 4 is much better in this regard.

My series 5 has the worst battery life of any of the Apple Watches that I’ve owned. I have had every series except series 6. I can barely make it through a full day with it.

I update my iPhone every year. But I haven’t felt compelled to upgrade my Series 5 since I got it.

At the end, it is just a tiny screen strapped to your wrist that provides notification. I’m under 40 so my blood oxygen is constantly over 96, even when I had COVID. And not really aware of any other improvements.

i keep pondering replacing my series 3 but i cant justify it. worst thing is im itching to buy something but all of my apple stuff is in that sort of 'id get benefit from a new one but not enough to persuade myself'. Iphone XS, 2017 imac, okay my ipad air 2 is the closest to retirement....

for a while i was thinking i had to as Hole19 was going really slow on my series 3 and i use it for golf a lot, but they've updated it and its fine.

when i gaze at the series 7, really what i want is to have more faces and thats it. would i notice it being bigger? for the first 5 mins. storage? there's so few useful apps that i cant even fill my series 3. always on? nice but not massive..

I've had the Ti versions of 5,6,7.
I never considered the Apple Watch until S5 and AOD.
S6 was compelling for me (sleep apnea) due to its O2 sensor. But that in and of it self wasn't enough to upgrade.
S7 was compelling as well due to the larger screen. But that in and of it self wasn't enough to upgrade.

The reason for the upgrade was due to my daughters getting my old ones!

I cant speak to any other models as I have had only the 5 but its battery life is a disgrace to supposedly a high end product. Luckily for me i dont wear it much due not an asset really to me....havent seen anything released since to change my mind. If i could get the Samsung watch to work with my iphone like the apple watch, I would have that no questions...much better and way better looking.

I do not buy the argument that a new apple watch 7 has poorer battery than an old worn out series 4-5 battery. Simply not possible

Well, I think hardware wise, there's a peak in S5 or so. The chip is practically similar form S5 onward,

This is wrong. The S6/7 chip makes using the Watch noticeably snappier than the S4/5 chip. I expect another step forward in this regard with the S8.

Imo future upgrades would more about the sensors (new or improved). There are still plenty of tech progress in health sensors and miniaturisation. I also think the popularity of Apple Watch encourages progressions in this field as now they have mass market audience (thus more money to be gained as motivation for improving the tech).

This is very, very right. All the obvious use cases of the Watch as a „screen on the wrist“ are already implemented. Potential new use cases of the Watch will be of the „sensors on the body“ type. Most of those are pretty high-hanging fruit, technologically, but the rewards will (hopefully) be enormous, both for the customers‘ health as well as Apple‘s revenue.

For me personally there is a third area - the „Watch as fashion“ aspect - where progress should me made as I think the Watch would look much better if it was much thinner. But for most people (as well as Apple) this is probably the least of their concerns, at least as long as there are still technological/functional goals to achieve first.

Have the 6, Only thing I miss that would be a "nice to have" feature but is not a "must have" that would force me to trade for a new is the cellular data, it's would be nice to be able to go outside without the phone for short trips sometimes. For now I want to keep the 6 for as long as it can go until apple releases something trully amazing on it, mine is mostly used for apple pay and media control nowadays.

Maybe I‘m misunderstanding something, but you could have bought an S6 with cellular option? It‘s available since Series 3…

I can't speak for the previous poster, but it's not readily available for me. My employer pays for my phone, I don't own a phone of my own. I don't think I can get a standalone data plan for Apple Watch.

Got my Series 6 wifi model at a super discounted price (since for some reason people hate the red model here) it was cheapper than a SE, in my currency at the time, for the 40mm, mine was 2699, SE 2799, SE Cellular 3200, S6 3100, S6 cellular 4000, cellular is nice but not almost double the price nice, so I stuck with the wifi only model for now, if the opportunity arises on the future on a new model with new cool features I may upgrade for a cellular at that time.

No you can’t that’s right, but that wasn‘t the point ;-)

Tbh I just had to choose between getting a new battery for my S4 or buying a new S7 and chose the battery replacement... AOD would be nice but other than that there's no reason for me to upgrade whatsoever unlike with iPhones where there's always some cool new features. :)

Was going to upgrade from my aluminum Series 4 to a Series 7 for most of the reasons stated, but decided to wait until the normal silver and black color options return. Colors were available with my 24" iMac, but someone at Apple had the sense to keep the silver version available.

It just depends on the features and/or battery life for when to upgrade. At first I upgraded quickly from S0 to S2 then S4 after that. I’ve been using my S4 since release and it has served me well. It’s only lately that my battery is not as great anymore and is in the red at the end of the day.
With the battery not as great and the newer features I decided to get the S7. It’s also been out for a little while now, so I was able to get a discount on mine.
After this I will probably keep the S7 for most likely longer than my S4.

Thanks for the inspiration. I've decided to make an overview (based on the Apple technical specifications, as provided on their site) with all models.

Nice list, but I noticed one mistake. On the blood oxygen sensor section for the SE you have it listed as “50 meters” instead of Yes/No like all of the other models.

Few weeks ago, I received a replacement S4 SS which I sent for battery service. Now that I have a watch with 100% battery health and 1 full year of warranty, I am probably going to use it fro few more years before I consider replacement as my S4 for now meets all my needs and checks all the check-boxes.

Probably just depends what you do honestly. I don’t care about any of the health stuff since it’s typically inaccurate or just a gimmick. Even as someone who lifts weights regularly and runs I could care less about the “fitness” features. When I had one, it was cellular, and mostly used it for listening to music while walking the dog or at the gym instead of have my bulky/expensive phone. Additionally, I have a few nice watches I prefer to wear at work as opposed to an ugly smart watch. Eventually got rid of it cause it was just another thing to charge and didn’t do enough.

On a side note, it always seems like out of shape people buy these as a new year’s resolution to exercise then never do it ha. Also has the worst resell value of any Apple product.

I’ve actually had two separate cardiologists tell me just since the first of the year to use the EKG feature if I felt I was having an issue, and email the results to them. Clearly they feel like there is some merit to that function.

I’ve also compared the blood oxygen to an actual pulse oximeter on multiple occasions when I’ve had access to the latter, and it is always within 1%.

If too old, they eventually lose software update support.

I upgrade every year.
My watch( 1st edition 2015 model) has stopped talking to my iPhone 11 since a recent firmware update. It’s never been off my wrist (apart from charging) since the day I bought it. I work in heavy industry so you can imagine the type of punishment it went through. So a very sad day. I miss my Apple Watch. It really %#ss*s me off as the watch still works perfectly as a stand alone, but it looks as though I’m going to have to upgrade because of the lack of support on older models. ?
Looking at the 7 in ss as I think the alloy models will not be as hard wearing. Any thoughts would be appreciated
