I live right off campus in a pretty rowdy neighborhood. Some jackass broke into my apartment last fall. I knocked him to the ground, pulled my knife, and he ran away. It worked out good for the both of us. Most people usually bring a weapon with them when they break into someone's house, so I was ready to battle to the death if need be. Good thing that didn't happen. I'm pretty sure he was at least buzzed though. Lots of drunken parties in my neighborhood. Probably trying to show off. I've thought about getting a gun since then. I did buy an airsoft and painted it to look like a real gun though. I also bought a solid black curtain in case people could see my HDTV and xBox 360 in my living room through the vertical blinds, which was pretty apparent from the outside and probably made for a good target. My roommate and I also keep "weapons" in the living room now, like his lacrosse sticks, my tennis rackets and heavy tripod, and scissors / utility knife in the pen cup on the coffee table.

When you say "gun crime" are you saying crime that was committed with an illegally owned firearm? Or are you talking about legally and illegally owned firearms all in a broad generalization, because it would ignorant of you to combine the two together.

But, either-way, it's largely irrelevant whether the weapon is legally owned or not. I can illegally kill or injure someone in my legally owned, taxed and insured car.

I'm not sure what your point is, if I'm honest. But I'm not going to sit here and argue over semantics.

Then he started to try to get the ipod off me and i was like "i dont think so!" so i started to whack him round the head with this solid bone with marrow in for my dog!!! He got put in to jail for 6 months i think

I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but that paints a pretty amusing picture. :)

Are you insinuating that anyone who carries a knife uses it to stab 16 year old choir boys because they won't fight? I said carry a knife for self-defense, not for attacking kids.

As AppleMatt (who quite obviously knows what he's talking about) has already said, a large proportion of people who carry a knife for "self defence" end up getting injured with their own blade. The plain fact is that if you get into in a fight with a knife involved, you're probably going to get cut - whether or not the knife was yours.

You, Sir, are an ignorant fool. I carry a knife daily, and I save lives. A knife is a tool, but i wouldn't expect narrow minded idiots like yourself to understand that.

There's a fairly obvious difference in attitude between carrying a utility knife for work purposes and carrying a knife for self defence.

Yep

This is why I carry a gun and a taser at all times.

You might be able to steal something from me, but you'll certainly pay a price.

If you think this is bad, imagine what south africa is like, most people buy cheap cheap phones because they know its going to get stolen and so they can replace it easily, the insurance option is way too expensive now days because the risk factor is sooooooooo high. I am south african so im not really slaggin my country off. On a lighter note, about 2 years back, some tramps/thiefs/robbers thought it would be funny to rob lights of the runway at an airport, i cant remember which airport though. I go back home all the time and think a trillion times whether to take my valuables such as my iPhone or iPod, but i have them insured anyway, but the main issue is now they just kill you whether you give them your stuff or not and they get away with it. Otherwise its such a beautiful country, the only thing i dont miss is the crime.

In south africa its standard to say 'atleast you're still alive' if you get robbed or mugged or just looked at...it is extremely scary, and these such acts in the video and sometimes worse happen on a daily basis.

First of all, I haven't seen these ads, but if you carry a knife, and you pull it out, you better be willing to use it, if you're not, you shouldn't have pulled it out. Otherwise you may in fact get stabbed with your own knife.
Not just willing, you better be able to use it. People watch action movies or TV shows and think it's easy to use a weapon in a fight. Unless you have lots of practice fighting, you will be freaking out and panicking if someone attacks you. The person attacking you probably has lots of practice with violence, and probably is much better at it than you.

You must also realize that by drawing a knife, you're escalating the lethality of the situation. If a person attacks you with fists and you pull a knife, not only are you likely to be stabbed by your own knife, but you also make it much more likely that the attacker will pull a knife or a gun of his own.

As much as I enjoy using my iPhone, it is replaceable, I am not, so the kid could have it.

I am sorry, but I would not risk my life to help someone keep a phone, no matter how cool it is is. If someone is being raped, or physically hurt, then yes, but I am not putting my life on the line for a phone.

It is relevant, because I can legally kill someone who is threatening my life, with my legally owned firearm.

You can't legally kill someone with an illegally owned firearm. There's a big difference.

Carrying a weapon to protect yourself can put you in danger, even to those trained to use those weapons and subdue opponents.

A group a 3 officers resorted to killing a previously unarmed burglar they came into contact with.

Seems he overpowered the first two officers on the scene, by taking away the taser they were using on him, and went after the first two officers zapping them with the taser. :p

A single unarmed burglar overpowed two armed officers, used their own weapons against them, and a third came onto the scene and whacked him.

I agree with that.
If someone pulls a knife or gun on you and asks for your phone, give it to them.
Its really not worth it for a piece of plastic and metal.

You are so off my original point it's unclear what to say next. Therefore, that's it for me.
