I'd be more interested to see how it handles zoom/google meet calls. They cause my MBP to sound like a fighter jet taking off and get extremely hot.
I don't use either of those, I'm a Skype/Telegram/FaceTime kinda person, but my guess is that they'd perform admirably, because those I've mentioned work great.

And you don't need to worry about sounds coming from the MBA, because it's fanless!

I've been shocked by the performance of Rosetta apps so far. Obviously it depends on which model of MBP you're coming from. I'm coming from a 2013 MBP-15 Retina 16GB, and decked-out Dual 2009 Classic Mac Pro, and this MBA is probably faster than both of them combined and then some in Rosetta apps.

Reminds me of those older videos where someone opens all the Apple creative pro stuff, some Adobe stuff, several games, and all the default apps at once on a Mac Pro or a PowerMac G5.

That's the problem with Apple's "benchmarks" and marketing stats (particularly for their "pro" computers). They're all reporting on ideal, unicorn scenarios, instead of the real world, professional scenarios where I'm jumping between 2-4 heavy lifting programs with a good measure of compiling thrown in too.
Read reviews on Anantech and other sites. Also they're not discontinuing their higher models with Intel (at least not now) so you have a CHOICE.

Well then, you‘ll just have to wait you turn for the next round of releases. Should only be about 6 months time, and then everyone who jumped on the M1’s will be jealous because you were smart and waited until the machine you wanted and needed was released. SSD’s or any other storage will nit be capable of serving as main system memory for a long long time if ever.

Nope, I will be laughing for waiting when you could be experiencing the future, now. For $999, I don't need to replace my main driver today, I can get this, enjoy it alongside my work machine, learn the strengths and weaknesses and then in 6 months if Apple releases a machine that I feel out of experience, not guess work, not old ways of doing things, that I could use, then cool. I upgrade, and sell my MBA M1 for $700 and figure the $300 was a cheap price to pay for so much gained. But sure, wait! kibitz from the sidelines. It's fun to read.

Frankly, I found the video bizarre. It looked artificially speeded up — and the user didn't even pause so we could see that the app was fully open, had completely loaded, and was ready for action!

Often, apps will show basic elements, but load the rest a tad later. They may not even take typing input or mouse pointer action until moments later, too. The video creator should have paused between app launches, so we could see that the app had stopped loading.

As someone wryly noted, you can also tweak the viewing speed by 1.5x (or 2x) and the loading goes even faster!

Unimpressed. By this particular video, that is. The laptops themselves look impressive based upon the early reviews, reports, and benchmarks.

Nah, I just recorded this video off-the-cuff and Arn asked me if he could upload it to YouTube.

The fact you think it looks speeded up is a testament to how unbelievably fast the M1 is. I can assure you, the recording is as as raw and un-tampered with as they come. You're in for a treat and quite the shock when you get your hands on one.

Me too, 'cept mine's late 2015 27" iMac. Best Mac I've ever owned as far as reliability. Hoping she'll hold up long enough for the M1 iMac or maybe a macpro mini and a prosumer display, if that ever happens.
yup been holding on to my late 2012 27" iMac waiting on a redesign, will jump on the new iMac with Apple Silicone when they drop next year, can only imagine how good they will be! Exciting times.

Ah yes you have a wonderful choice between a fast CPU and iGPU with limited memory, or a slow and outdated CPU and iGPU but lots of memory. Gee, thanks Apple.

Cool story bro ...

Now open Xcode, FCP X, Apple Configurator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Android Developer (thought probably not available) all at once!!!
OK, party pooper - it's just a fun way to demonstrate the potential.
Are there more processor-taxing scenarios? Clearly.
I don't care your Mac config - none could run that simple test with as impressive a result.

What a strange reply!

I'm saying for most people 8GB of RAM is more than enough... how many average users do you know that use 32GB of data in one sitting? You are the exception, 99% of users will not notice a difference in 8GB, 16GB or 32GB. The M1 is a SoC so the speed increase means vast improvements for the vast majority of users.

BTW, I'm also a professional and I have been for 25 years specialising in Apple products. Who is patronising who?

Never heard of RAM Doubler?? :)

TBH you're the kind of dude I'd actively avoid discussions with. Have a great day!
I seriously don't mean to hate, but if you're a pro who has been working 25 years specializing in Apple product, then you know that professionals in computing, editing, re: anyone using a computer for high load / demand purposes, then you'd know that this (M1 MacBook Air) really isn't for us. So technically, yes, we should see our behinds out on a MacBook Air post that shows the wonders of opening native Apple / iPadOS apps.

But to bring up RAM Doubler, something that hasn't been available in years, and even then quoting a link that talks about the app 25 years ago ... yeah, not sure about how recent that specializing is.

Needless to say, this isn't for professionals and is just a fluff article to show the wonders of what can best be described as an iPad Pro with advancements. It's not an entirely bad thing - we're simply impatient for what Apple could bring to an actual Pro world. I'd be more floored if it can do Xcode and the other apps I mentioned with 16 GB (much less 8 GB) and what the takeaways are.

Now delete user and system cache folders and boot holding the shift key to bypass the boot cache and then open all apps.
Some of those apps were never opened before as they had their welcome splash screens pop up. So they aren’t fully opening, aren’t working with any files or libraries, etc.

It’s a fun trick but worthless.

This sounds intriguing! I would love to see the performance impacts of all the app I listed over time with the M1. It's great for a few days, then it's just the chug of death until finally I need to reboot.

THIS ENTIRELY!!! Especially with doing Zoom meetings, Safari tabs, Xcode, Configurator, I can go on and on ... and my MacBook goes into a slow death. I'm hopeful that these M1s will be great and the reduced memory won't be a factor, but ... yeah, I'm skeptical by nature on this. I want to be proven wrong.
Remember that this is Mac Processor #1 from Apple.

This whole release is focused on entry-level machines, and its still impressive. When was the last time you were blown away by the bottom-end entry-level processor of a consumer-grade Mac?

Many more processors will follow with greater and greater capabilities. They can gen up all kinds of interesting things. Like how about a dozen high performance cores instead of just 4 high performance and 4 low power like now.

There is no reason why memory capacity on later AS chips won't come in multiples of 16Gbyte.

Apple did not paint themselves in a corner. I'm struggling to even imagine what a Mac Pro with AS will look like in a year or two. They could even produce a special processor just for that machine if they wanted.

Sky's the limit here. But I wasn't prepared to be this impressed with their first entry-level processor.

I'm using mine to read this and it is BUTTERY smooth. Safari is SNAPPY, really. What are some cool things I should do with it?

Also, it has the updated keyboard which oh my god is incredible. I've missed it.

I am hoping more people will buy these entry level machines, so in a year and a half, I can buy them at 1/4 the price for simple IT projects.

I received my 13" MacBook Pro today! its the WOW factor!! I thought it would be good but this is incredible!! 😃

You do know that 32GB RAM in an I7 Mac and 16GB in an M1 are not the really 1:1 comparable right? It's not the same metric.

Stop with this. Yes it's the same metric. Imagine you have a 10 litre bucket, and you have 10 litres of liquid. You need a 10 litre bucket to store 10 litres of liquid. This is like saying having a fancy new tap (faucet) somehow makes your bucket more efficient. It doesn't. If you have 32GB of data you need to represent in memory, you need 32GB of RAM!

They addressed their comment to people in this thread complaining about the lack of RAM, that includes me and other Pros. I'm not being contrarian. I'm pointing out that people seem to think, to coin a phrase, "16GB ought to be enough for anybody" plus "blah blah blah M1 efficiency magic". It's like they cannot get their head around the fact that there are users who need more, and those users also know that they need more and why they need it.

For most people, I absolutely agree 16GB is enough. But the people complaning they can't get 32GB or 64GB already know they're part of the group for which 16GB isn't enough, so these commenters that come along and say they're wrong because of magic are completely unhelpful.
I mean, are you joking with this kind of crap? You will not be buying a MacBook Air. You won’t be buying a low end MacBook Pro. If you buy a Mac mini, you will buy I high end one. Im pretty sure you know that.

These machines are undeniably impressive, especially because they’re low end, and all of the low end limitations that apply. Limited ram. Limited ports. Limited thermals.

Wait for your machine and stop with the ridiculous trolling of an obviously break through mac.

Ffs.
