you guys think we'll get a 45mm (41+4 akin to how 49 is 45+4 bump) in a smaller size form factor like an Ultra Mini or something down the road?

Or is the Garmin market they're trying to swallow really just a big watch space?

I think a smaller Ultra 45mm is possible, but the Series design is so stale that I also have to imagine they’ll finally kill its rounded pebble look soon. It’s hardly changed since Apple Watch began.

I don’t see the Ultra being produced with identical functionality in a smaller size. There is a reason that dive watches and running watches are the size that they are - they need a bigger display and bigger buttons for users who are on the move..

I do...

I think they will shrink it in diameter and height and it will become the new form factor for their entire line within 1 or 2 years.

They will remove things like the water temp/depth gauge, so that it's not 'Ultra' anymore - and to be able to make it thinner, they'll reduce the battery life a little... And then just make it in aluminum etc and all the options and colours they usually have for the 'regular' model... Titanium will be Ultra only.

What about the Ultra is perfect for all users or wouldn’t be translated for smaller hands and enthusiasts who aren’t extreme users? I think it’s also a mistake to think Apple believes this is only going to slam dunk with athletes. And if it is designed to work for people with large hands, it most certainly could be Shrunk to work for smaller hands. There’s no such thing as a Goldilocks watch size.

In fact, many active people complain about Ultra’s battery being unviable for multi-day trips when Garmin does weeks. Many divers are complaining it doesn’t directly connect to smart dive tank equipment. As much as this watch will please the active Apple users, it certainly isn’t going to be so deep into the active features world that it isn’t simply a more premium Apple Watch.

it’s a no-brainer for many people who are modestly active but want a new design, more durable body, better GPS tracking, and louder speakers. None of that requires the adventurous spirit to want

I don't see it being produced with identical functionality in a smaller size because they won't be able to fit the larger battery, siren module, larger speakers and larger GPS chip (I assume) in a smaller casing. Maybe at some point in the future when the tech is minimized further, but not with the current technology.

I think it is a rather ugly watch but still would wear it because of the improvements it brings.
But that squared off mock up posted here on the site looked 100 times better.

The design is pretty bad ass, with the focus on being a tougher version of the Apple Watch.. Like the normals better, but I'm not really the target audience here.

The size kills it for me though - way too big for me. a smaller variant would have been good, but as the display is not really that much bigger than the 45mm S8, a smaller 46 mm. version of the Ultra would have a smaller display than the 45mm S8, witch might be the reason they ruled it out.

If the S8 is a pretty watch, then the Ultra is a bold watch. There is nothing wrong with wearing a bigger, bulkier watch even with a suit. And you don’t have to be a fashion icon to make a distinctive fashion choice.
