The Ultra is noticeably thicker than the AW8 though. I’m not sure how they could have improved the battery life in without going much larger.

My understanding is that you can get much better battery life by turning off the AOD, which I plan to do on the Ultra I ordered anyway.
whats AOD?

I don't care for the design at all compared to the regular Apple Watch, however I am considering it for the battery life. I wish Apple would have increased the battery life on the s8 and I wouldn't even consider this watch.

Style icon Gianni Agnelli wore a Ploprof on an Isofrane rubber strap over his cuff, and the Ultra on midnight ocean strap is giving me those vibes.

❤️ this look, very stylish! But big drawback for Watch is fabric blocking the sensors…

Thx. Im still on series 4 so dont think it applies to my watch in the app.

Yup. I’m also coming from a S4, so the AOD wasn’t an option. I honestly don’t like the idea of having the screen on and visible to everyone near me. Maybe I’ll change my mind once I try it.

That's where I was at when I went from s4 to s7, I figured AOD would be distracting and wreck battery life.
I didn't care for it at first, but decided to tough it out for a full week and see how things went.

I've left it on, setting to Theater Mode while in a dark room. It's nice to have at times, but not what I'd call a vital feature, and I can still get 2 full days of use out of the watch with it on. It allows you to see information you might want to see, even when Raise to Wake fails.

I was also worried about the larger size.
So I made a 3D printed version to test, and I guess I can get away with it :)
This is awesome, makes me wish I had a 3D printer so I could try things on like that.

Yes I know 3D printers do much more, but this is one of the more useful things I have seen.

What size wrist do you have?

my wrist is about 18cm

Maybe you have a friend with a 3D printer ?

None of those options were ever of any interest to me so it’s not my criteria for judging the ‘datedness’ of the Watch. As I said, if that’s how you’ve justified your purchase, all the power to you.

I have not justified one of my purchases in a lot time.

Aesthetics is so subjective. The way I see it Apple is targeting a certain group of people, and they look at the functionality first and aesthetics secondly or not at all...
I've had S0/3/4/7 and I order the Ultra because it offers diving capabilities, and unless I (me that is) don't like wearing it, I don't give a ratz what others think. If you look at AW at s piece of "jewelry" you'll likely feel different and that is ok.

Im pretty baffled by some of these posts. "Too Big, Too Bulky. Why didn't they make it more sleek? Why the big bulge on the side"....
This watch was OBVIOUSLY made to compete with Garmin's watches. It's supposed to be rugged, it's supposed to be bigger (easier to see/read/access controls). It's supposed to be used as more of a tool than a "smart watch".... just like Garmin watches.

I have a Garmin Epix gen2 and an AW4. I'm also female with small wrists (155mm). The size of the Garmin Epix doesn't bother me in the least. I trail run, hike, backpack, snowshoe, etc. I want a screen big enough to look down and immediately see the info I want. I ALSO want a watch that can take a beating, that I don't have to baby. I get that with the Garmin Epix, and now it looks like I will also get that with the AW Ultra.
And yes, I plan to use both watches. Why? Because I can? I dunno, I like variety 🤷‍♀️

So, simple solution. Don't like the looks? Great, don't buy an Ultra. Get a regular AW8. It's sleek, you can get a smaller size. What's the problem? Let us, who want a "workhorse" watch, so to speak, get the Ultra.

I'm glad Apple finally made a watch that looks like it belongs (and will work well) in the outdoors.

yep, the Ultra has been designed as a tool, not jewelry

Apple Watches have a much more complex OS and many more capabilities than any Garmin watch. It's like wondering why a VW Bug won't go as fast as a Ferrari when they both have 4 wheels and an engine.
No, I am aware they offer different experiences. I just find it odd they didn’t adapt better to one of the biggest selling points in that class of watches. They clearly are playing with longer power modes and know it’s an issue - there’s a longer life than Series models, plus a long exercise mode they vaguely say can last through an Iron Man competition (17 hours it seems), and will patch in Low Power mode this Fall to give it up to 60 hours in standby.

It’s curious they don’t have a mode more suited to more than 2 days of expedition and camping like the competitors can do. No need to pretend battery is a non-issue when even Apple is spending time on trying to share some appeal of battery reliability. This Watch is a very deliberate attempt to unseat Garmin from being #1 in the $500+ smart watch market share.

I dont think this watch was made for Garmin. Apple made it as a watch to see if it would gain traction with people who wear watches for fashion and then they will make all the watches follow a similar format going forward. I feel like the outdoor activities features are a secondary excuse. like 0.1% of the market actually dives. The dive stuff and promoting outdoor fitness is just a way to get users to justify the larger display watch.…when many people like myself already wanted a watch with a larger display.

Where did you get the STL file to print that? Might print one myself for curiosity lol.

I made the file myself :)

I've been wearing a S5 White Ceramic with a white Nike band for 2.5 years...

Oddly enough - the AWU is ok looking... Unless -> It has the white ocean strap - then I love it lol (so that's what I ordered)

I'm just one of those people who really needs the proper colour strap to make ME like the looks of a watch...

I don't like it aesthetically at all. As someone else said, it looks to me like an unrefined prototype. The "design" basically consists of taking the original design, grafting some chunky things on the side, and stretching the top straight up to accommodate a flat face. It actually makes me nervous about the future of the Apple Watch.

I think if you take that exact watch - then they make it thinner, shrink it to 43mm, make models in aluminum, steels etc like current models - it could be the future of the AW.

A thinner, smaller black stainless steel version would be sexy IMO.

Get rid of the gaudy orange button (make it black) etc

I opted for monthly Applecare+ on the assumption I'll use this hard - for just one year - and they will come out with a significantly improved model next year andI'll move on to that...

But I do see what you and others are saying about how it looks even if I don't mind it..
