Man.. you really gotta be a fanboy to honestly think that the ultra watch is a pretty watch. It’s a tool, not for daily wear…. Com’on people, chill…..
Nothing that has been said in this thread so far really goes beyond a discussion of fashion watches vs. tool watches. At least so it seems to me. It's just opinion, since you see people wearing Submariners or Omega Seamasters with suits all the time. Johnny Ive was clearly in the camp of trying to make a fashion statement with the Apple Watch. Given what they were trying to do when it first launched I think that was the right choice, though I think Johnny added in his extra insufferable touch with the whole gold thing. But LOTS of people prefer tool style watches, including those involved in high fashion. Why SHOULDN'T Apple make something that caters to that crowd as well?
Its really not any different than people wearing dive watches with a suit, which has become quite normal these days.
I mean if James Bond can wear a Seamaster with a tux, why the hell not right?
Yeah, that's a big part of where I'm at on it. I do like a lot of the features, but the size and garish orange button take it firmly into sports-only or 🤡⌚ territory.

I tried thinking about how I could fit it into my life, but just can't.

Wear one watch to workout in the mornings, then switch out for another to go to work, then swap it out again for evening workouts, then back again for evening activities, late business meetings/dinners and sleep? That's a lot of swapping. And extra expense if both are on cellular plans.

Only use the Ultra for weekend activities? That's very little use out of an otherwise nice watch. Possibly justifiable for the safety features & GPS accuracy, but again extra expense if both watches have a cellular plan and one's only used periodically.

Sounds like others are finding a way to make it work. Sadly, it's just not the watch for me right now and that's okay.
I stopped thinking like this when I worked for Nasdaq. Adena Friedman, the CEO, wears a silver aluminum Apple Watch with a sport band (pink sand when I was there) all day, every day. I saw plenty of photos of her working in the office, ringing the opening/closing bells, and at special black tie events, wearing the same watch in all of them. Nobody, anywhere, said a single thing about it. Not inside the company, outside, or in the press. And the same was true for MANY of the VPs (male and female) as well. Now there were people who did wear fancy watches, but every single one who I encountered was a middle manager type. The message to me was clear, it's the work you do that matters, not how you look doing it. So if nobody cares what watch the CEO of one of the most influential companies in the world is wearing, what makes you think they care what you're wearing? Do you honestly think you're going to win or lose business at these late business meetings/dinners because of the watch you're wearing?
I honestly think you can get away with it with wearing a suit. The band and watch faces will play a big role in that.
It will absolutely be possible to do so.

Welp I am not a diver nor some extreme runner. However, I have ordered one because I can appreciate the extra real estate and love the grown-up look. I've always thought the previous Apple Watches looked lame and generic and really something for a child. I would always slap a bulky screen protector on it just to give it a more robust look. I am a grown man wanting to wear a grown mans watch and the Ultra fits the bill. Great job Apple.

If not for that bulge i would have been sold on it but it's an easy pass in this case :) Way too bulky and not slick enough at all and that's the whole concept of the applewatch.

The Ultra is noticeably thicker than the AW8 though. I’m not sure how they could have improved the battery life in without going much larger.

My understanding is that you can get much better battery life by turning off the AOD, which I plan to do on the Ultra I ordered anyway.

‘Until battery technology leaps forward it would be hard to give the 8 users more battery without making the case larger. I am pretty sure Apple has it maxed out and it using ever tiny spot in the 8.
The Garmin models it competes with last for weeks on a single charge. I do find it curious that Apple didn’t get more dramatic battery life than 1.5 days in normal use. Not super thrilling for camping.

Let’s throw a spanner in the works and say, there isn’t much extra ’real estate’

Yes I prefer the latest tech to look more Star Trek than Judge Dredd, each to their own I guess.

Apple Watches have a much more complex OS and many more capabilities than any Garmin watch. It's like wondering why a VW Bug won't go as fast as a Ferrari when they both have 4 wheels and an engine.

I love the bigger watch size, I would’ve liked Apple to go even bigger and release a titanium wrist band to match it.

The rugged outdoor sales pitch strikes me as a bit of misdirection. The titanium case featured in Series 7 is no longer available in Series 8. So if you'd like to retain the titanium case's advantages (lighter, stronger) your only option is the Ultra. Moreover, the Ultra's brighter screen, longer battery life, a larger number of complications that can be loaded on its exclusive faces, a programmable button -- plus full access to all the features in the Series 8 makes it in my view an attractive purchase.

It’s too big for me too and would look stupid on my wrists. Not my taste in terms of design and much prefer the standard Watch shape. I’m sure big people will buy it and use it to track their progress as they lose weight though.
Is this a fat joke?

what makes you think they care what you're wearing?
That wasn't quite my point. I wear the aluminum Apple Watch everywhere, practically 24/7 and don't particularly care what people think of what I'm wearing. If someone's offended by it, that's entirely their problem. But I'm also not going to wear board shorts and sandals to a funeral. Or, perhaps more akin to this, I'm not going to voluntarily wear white socks with a suit.

Perhaps I'll see the Ultra in-person and change my mind, but it doesn't seem like an every day, any situation wearable to me.

‘I understand you are not happy but if you read these forums most are very happy and both the watches and iPhones look like they sold well.

I would imagine they’ve sold well in America where prices were frozen but the press are reporting complaints across Europe and the UK as the pro model iPhones have gone up £150 and €200. Apples watches have gone up considerably too.

‘I agree, but believe that most of the cost increase, in the EU, is directly due to inflation and the currency exchange differences. The dollar seems to be remarkably strong which had much to do with our prices remaking the same.

Many people who say blah blah blah “not appropriate for workplace etc’ havent ever worked in corporate america or have a caricaturish view of corporate america.

It’s pegged to the value of the currency and the legal structures in those countries,

It does not have to look nice at first place - it has to be accurate, rugged workhorse :)

A watch is still “jewelry” even if it has functions to it. I dont think hyperbolic comparisons like “board shorts and sandals at a funeral” are the best arguments to illustrate your point.
