Predict Apple Watch "xxxx-Gate" - I predict "Scuffgate II"

So yeah, my money's on another round of "scuffgate" with these new jewels from Apple.

Hear out my theory, agree or disagree or offer your alternative "xxxx-gate" that we'll all be nuzzing about in early May or so.

I think a confluence of events, a perfect storm if you will, of forces are right now gathering strength and we're destined to hit them head-on.

  • The cost of watches are driving more and more people towards the less durable aluminum/glass model.
  • Many are ordering the larger 42mm model, even if a smaller size would be better protected by smaller wrists.
  • Apple customers are insanely fastidious about keeping their hardware pristine.

I suspect most of Apple Watch customers are from the Gen-X and Millennials and both of those groups can legitimately be called "the great unWatched Generations".

(see what I did there?)

These are not people that have grown up wearing watches every day. Sure many have, but I have loads of friends that use their phones as their timepieces, we're just not as big of a watch wearing society as we once were. We're not used to having something valuable and breakable on our wrists all day every day. So in about 2 weeks, millions of people, many non-watch folks, will strap an oversized, polished (but not particularly hardened) techno jewelry, onto their second favorite wrist, and start swinging their arms all over the place.

"DING" "BONK" "SCRATCH" "SCRAPE" and of course - "SCUFF".

Think about how crazy people on here got over iPhone scratches. Phones are kept in nice soft pockets and protected by big tough cases. Your watch is out there whacking into door jambs, countertop edges, and everything else you could imagine.

I wouldn't be surprised to see clear, disposal hard shell covers become a thing. I don't think soft plastic membrane covers are gonna help in a battle with a metal doorknob whacking your watch as you run out the door.

You heard it here first - "Scuffgate II - This Time It's About Time"

The only god damn gate that'll be acceptable is watergate.

My guesses are:

1. Bandghazi
2. Watergate

the idea of trying to fool people into playing your sick speculated game is unreal. the product isnt out and you're wanting people to guess negatively on what others will say is wrong with this revolutionary product. the idea that its finally coming isn't enough, so we have to start talking about what will be wrong with it? sorry but first, you're not giving away anything for free, and second, lets just hope its a great watch and enjoy it.:apple:

Haha not too hot on sarcasm are you? Maybe its more of a British thing ;)

I consider these 'gates' absolutely ridiculous, and if someone can come up with one you can be sure they will! My post is more of a pi$$-take and is not meant to be taken seriously. I'm looking forward to the watch but there will be people out there who will put it under a microscope in the hope of finding something to try (yet again) to tarnish Apples world class products and image.

lmfao, I just spat my coffee out reading that mate. Top notch

I think it was finally Bend-gate that tipped me over the edge and is the reason I created this topic. Have you ever heard anything more ridiculous than "no I didn't sit on it or fall on it at all! it just....bent....erm....by itself!" - If thats the case then why is MY launch iPhone 6 absolutely IMMACULATE? LOL there are some proper jokers out there :) I actually had someone ask me once "is that the one that bends?" - yeah mate its been bending all morning, like a worm.

I don't understand.

How can stainless steel wear off itself?

Because....obviously....the evil corporation known as Apple made a deal with the devil and its actually coated plastic :D Fake-gate?

Putting gate at the end is stupid and I suspect the majority of people who even use the term don't even know the origins.
[/rant]

Seems a little premature for such discussions since the watch isn't even out.

Origin is Watergate. these days a suffix to suggest the existence of a scandal in an Apple product, on these forums ;)

Comedians and people like southpark have made it a mainstream word.

Since when do you need facts to establish a scandal :)

people who ordered the Space Gray will find out really quick that DLC coating on watches are less than "diamond-like"... expect quite few scuffs and scratches

STABGATE!

CrystalGate...

Unbox Therapy provides another insightful and consumer-friendly investigation illustrating that when struck by a stray bullet, the supposedly 'second hardest to diamond' sapphire crystal screen can - no WILL - Crack.

He goes on to explain that this is a definitive manufacturing flaw, and explains how the sapphire crystal watch Samsung doesn't even make is impervious to such damage because Samsung uses a better non-manufacturing manufacturing process.

Watchgate..

The watchgate will be that the watch gets too warm! People will think that this warmness is causing radiation poisoning to their skin and give them Melanoma skin cancer. You heard it here first!
