So far it works good.

Doesn't work if in sleep mode, even if AOD enabled. But if you have "Wake on Wrist Raise" enabled, that shouldn't be an issue.

IMO, it needs more options. I really don't care to answer most of my calls from the watch. I want the option to double tap to silence or reject calls. 😁

Just installed the beta on my AW Ultra Series 2, and surprisingly it works very well so far. It will probably take several months before I can train my brain to use the feature :)

EDIT: Also, hoping future updates enable more customization for double tap feature. For example, reject an incoming call w/ double tap, rather than answer a call.
In order to answer an incoming call with double tap, do you have to raise your wrist first? From the description of the feature it seems like you always have to raise your wrist first but I am just want to confirm this use case.

Yes, you do. Nothing will work when the AW is sleep (even if you see the incoming call). The AW must be woken first.

It also works if you manual wake the display by taping it or rotating the crown, but that would defeat the purpose of double tap.

The accessibility tap and clench options are pretty bad.
Never work when you want. Tons of accidental taps

Apple should of highlighted that its just a better version of accessibility feature using the new features of the S9 chip etc... it would remove such criticism
HAH! Apple “existing as a company” is cause for criticism. Anything beyond that is expected… par for the course.

I used to double click the big button on the side of my Ultra to pay for things, that doesn’t work anymore and I can no longer easily access Apple Pay on my watch..? Am I missing something or did the latest, “enhancements” bork the standard use cases?

Update: replies to my note made me investigate further and it seems to be working again upon reboot.., something I generally don't do as much as I should with the watch. Thanks to those who replied!

So when you invoke it, does it rely on your screen being awake in order to recognize? I tried it but since I keep my screen in low refresh mode unless I actually tap/press a button, this was pretty useless for me.
It does, and requires looking at the screen in order to make sure you’re selecting the correct option. I’m updating my watch shortly, wonder if I have to turn accessibility off in order to turn this feature on?

The answer is “Yes, you do.”

This works fine for me. Used it several times today.

Weird, thanks though. Gives me a reason to look a little deeper into the issue. When I double click I just get a blank screen where I used to see the card being presented.

Does anyone have documentation/know specifically how to detect double tap gesture in a watchOS app? I tried a few things, none of which worked. I wanted to see if anyone was able to figure it out. I'm trying to just add basic functionality, very similar to how the stopwatch app starts/stops on double tap. Thanks.

It's disappointing that the betas for the watch are so risky in the sense that you have to send your watch to Apple to downgrade. I really hate that they got rid of the Dock. It had my most used apps readily available. I don't know why they thought assigning one of the physical buttons to Control Center, which I rarely use and was already easily accessibly from any screen, was great idea. Some of these OS updates are ridiculous. How many generations of cars have we had and how many times have the gas and brake pedals been flipped? Pick something and stick with it.
The dock is still there. Double click the crown.

I also tried middle and index fingers which seemed to work maybe 70% of the time. Thumb and other fingers are far less effective but occasionally work.
How are you able to double-tap your middle and index fingers?

I'm having trouble doing this. I can sort of side-tap them to each order, but I cannot achieve a direct fingertip-to-fingertip (i.e., with the fingerprints making contact) double-tap of my middle and index fingers.

The middle and index fingers are not opposable (to each other).

So you’ve tested it on a S9 or Ultra 2 running 10.1?
I’m testing it on my AWU 2. It works flawlessly so far. You just need to pause between pinches or it won’t detect the last pinch. If you pinch too fast, one after another, that causes a no detect. Definitely why I upgraded from AWU 1 to 2. This feature alone is great. I used the accessibility pinch on the AWU 1, but had about a 50% detect rate and no way to set it up as the primary action which sucked. Double tap takes care of it.

The other suggestion for others is to make sure you tap your fingers good tor the accelerometer to pick it up. If you do a light tap with your finger and thumb it will miss it. Just tapping a bit harder makes it a 100% detect for me.

Still works for me on the AWU2

I'm not a fan of new software features being locked behind new generation hardware that technically doesn't have to be. Even odder that besides the brighter screen, this is the new feature / value add of Series 9 and wasn't even available at release :O

Older series watches are completely capable of this as far as I know, given its already been there somewhat with accessibility

..in the same way no reason 14 pro / pro max can't get the snazzy iPhone 15 camera software improvements

sigh.
This has always been. Always.

I always wonder if long term it is better or worse to do this though. It builds resentment over time when they lock software features behind new hardware.

Some day someone will eventually will come along and replace them and I'll happily jump ship.
Apple is a for profit company.
They don’t innovate like they once did, so it’s a slow drip of new features.

They’ve had a patent - and working demo - for under display fingerprint for years.

And yet… dynamic island and model-locked camera improvements.

The swipe to the left or right is gone?
I am guessing you mean to switch faces?

Yes, the easy swipes to change faces has now been moved into the long press to edit function. You invoke the edit screen and then you can swipe to a different face. Threw me off but sort of makes sense that they would make it less easy to accidentally change faces. Took a bit of time to retrain my muscle memory.

People say the exact same (Assistive Touch) feature on the older watches, doesn't work as well. I don't know, but it works perfectly fine on my series 7. I've set up actions for double and single finger tap, it works all the time.

I've also read multiple times that the old feature works better on the normal series, than the ultra. Maybe they only needed this new hardware+chip to make it work better on those giant, heavy cased ultra watches..

I didn’t know about the assistive touch one until I got the new watch. Will have to try it out on my old one.
