Is this normal? Apple Support is having me send my bricked Watch in too. They emailed me a link for me to submit “payment information and continue with the repair process”. On the page the link goes to it has the figure of $786.40. I’m thinking, whoa! My watch is a 44 aluminum. I could buy it now from Apple for $499. I could see them asking for credit card information should they determine that they would need to charge someone, but that is a crazy amount to put on a page that then has a Contine button, which I will not press. The Watch should still be under warranty; I just got it in early October. And it's pretty obvious now that this was their screw-up. Is this odd?

(Yes, I plan on calling them tomorrow to ask, but I was really curious about this. Is this figure the ceiling of something they need to have authorization to proceed. It still seems absurd.)

my link was the $399 + tax since it was my sport version that got bricked.

Every person who contacts Apple gets a different response. Some get a replacement sent immediately, some have to send the old one in and wait for a replacement, and some get your experience. It totally depends on the person you talked to and how they handle the case.

This is the frustrating part for me - I've been keeping an eye on everyone's posts here, have a repair case # in with Apple (and probably box enroute eventually), but also live close enough that I could go to the Apple Store. Since it's been ages since I've had to have something serviced by Apple, I have two sets of questions for all of you:

1) I've had my Watch for about 5 weeks (got it on launch day), so has anyone had any luck with a device of that age getting swapped in the stores? Did you have to bring all the original packaging/materials?

2) If #1 happens, would the other repair process be able to be cancelled if the empty box is already on its way?

They wouldn't replace mine in store as it was over 30 days old. Said they would be sent out and could take up to 2 weeks for repair. So I called AppleCare and did express replacement instead.

Thanks for the data point - did you have AppleCare+? I was leaning towards avoiding this time around due to being fairly lucky with the last go-around (Series 0) and defects/failures being covered by an extended warranty through my credit card.

It depends on what Apple decides to do about the issue. Only they know the scale of the problem, though it seems to be common in the forums and in Twitter.

If a hundred people walk into each Apple store expecting a replacement they might not have the stock available and if several thousand are sending theirs in for “repair” (actually replacement as there is no repair) that it a logistical mess.

They really missed something big with the beta testing.

They may just rebuild the innards with your casings.

That worries me. Are those of us that were asked to send ours in first (and this is a watch that got TODAY) going to be waiting weeks for a replacement to become available because they already sent the ones they had as express replacements?

I'd venture to guess that they hold some back for these kinds of reasons (they've done it with the iPhones in the past—even for AppleCare+ claims).

How are you guys getting an express replacement? I have AC+ and they never even mentioned that to me. Rep just scheduled a status update call for tomorrow.

I’d love to hear some actual numbers for how many people are affected. All I’ve heard is that it’s “limited”. Does that mean 10,000 users worldwide out of several hundred thousand that updated their watches today? Each one of those people is going to need a new watch.

i gotta say i feel really, really badly for you and others that just got your watches.

i waited for my sport and just got in a couple of weeks ago (already had my SS that i fortunately got on release day) and i'm still pissed that my sport has to be replaced (and i'm more pissed thinking i'm getting a refurbished for a couple of week old product. UGH!

why don't you call back and ask for an express replacement? i pretty much told the guy "everyone on the forums is getting theirs replaced... why am i waiting? while i still had to wait for him to call me back... he did call back and gave me the link for making the hold on my card to get express.

if you haven't sent your watch anywhere..... you still have a chance to get an express replacement!

Thanks for the reply. Yup I have AppleCare plus on my watch. Guess I never even brought up replacement on my call and neither did the rep. I’ll have to lean on him a bit during my status update call tomorrow

It depends on who you talk to. The guy I had was OK and I didn’t want to push him by demanding a new one immediately. I just him work through his decision tree. They might have a different strategy tomorrow after they’ve assessed the problem overnight.

I do have AppleCare plus, though not needed for this as it is a device failure.

Yup I’d rather not have to get a replacement but that’s probably inevitable due to the lack of a physical port to kick the watch out of a bootloop

Good thing my series 3 updated fine lol. That’ll tie me over.

That’s why I made the suggestion that they may rebuild some. I can’t imagine they have stock for what they are telling people is a widespread issue, especially since they pulled the update.

We know the scale isn’t good if they pulled the update.

I’m guessing in the tens of thousands. The update was available for about six hours before they pulled it. Lucky for Apple, you need the charger to update the watch so it can’t be done casually.

That’s a lot of watches to send people.

I do have AppleCare plus, though not needed for this as it is a device failure.

Just got on chat, asked location (I'm in the lower 48 US), and apparently was not eligible for Express Replacement, was told mail-in or visiting a store could be an option, but nothing policy-wise if they'd exchange there or ship it off. It sounds like on here, people have had both, depending on availability (fair), or the person they got in the store.

Looks like this may be a solution. >>>
If the update file has already been downloaded (but not yet installed), follow the steps here to remove it:
On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Usage > Software Update - delete the download.
Apple Watch and iPhone must be rebooted. Source >> Reddit.

I just went to do this, as I saw the update earlier today, but charge my phone in the mornings, and decided to wait until the morning. So, when I go into the watch app, the little "1" on the app indicating an update was there. So, when I go into the "General ->Software Update", the update information automagically disappears, and I get a "Your watch is up to date 5.0.1" message. Looks like Apple pulled the update.

Does anybody know if it can be fixed in a service? We don’t have apple stores here and the watch is out of stock everywhere. I wouldn’t want to go 100 miles to a authorised service to hear “we can’t do anything to fix it”

I have it downloaded (or at least I did have it downloaded) on my iPhone 6s (iOS 12.1) but not installed yet. This is what I’m getting when I try to install on my S2:

CC690BC2-B072-4C6F-9110-584797AC8B64.png

Edited to add: I feel super bad for you S4 owners. I’d be looking to set something on fire if this happened to me.

Two to three weeks for a factory replacement for mine. Apple did say that I could try my local store and it would be at the store managers discretion as to whether they would replace it as it’s over 14 days old. I opted for a factory order as at least it will cone with 5.1 preinstalled.
The annoying thing is that the beta testing should iron out any issues like this

I can’t believe you guys are using your Apple Care to sort this issue that is Apples issue, they should replace your watch regardless as they have killed them, not you.

I don’t yet own a S4 but I certainly wouldn’t use my AC+ to have them replace it when they should replace it anyway, your paying for their mistake.

Adam.

It won’t count against your AC. Purely warranty replacement/repair.
