Just curious, and I suspect the answer is still no, but a relative of mine has an Android phone.

With watchOS 6 getting a dedicated app store, could he possibly get a cellular Apple Watch and use it, or does it still require an iPhone?

Yeah, he can get a cellular Apple Watch. But unfortunately it still require an iPhone in order to function.

Regardless the Apple Watch having a stand-alone AppStore, the idea with that.. is just trying to push for more Watch Apps. But imo, the Apple Watch will be dependent on the iPhone for years to come.

My belief is simple, it helps Apple to sell both devices. It’s a lock-in move, similar to the iMessage approach.

I read your first sentence and thought "Oh, cool", then read your second sentence. I think he's enjoying the Android ecosystem for his phone, so I don't think he'll be switching back to iPhone any time soon, even if he'd like an Apple Watch.

Thanks for answering though! :D

An argument could be made that by selling Apple Watches to non-iPhone users could actually entice them to switch more than by using a lock-in move.

I believe they will be uncoupled some day, but it may be a few years before that happens.

One other question, just out of curiosity, could someone with an older model iPhone use it just for setup, but not in their day to day usage?

I can use my Apple Watch without the iPhone except during initial set up and software updates. For that you need an iPhone compatible with iOS 13.
Not sure what luck your going to have trying to get an Apple Watch to access the stuff on the Android device.

Honestly just curious if it was possible. I wasn't sure how independent the watch is these days.

New cloud backend for WatchOS 6/iOS 13 makes it impossible to add any new friends for activity sharing or walkie talkie. Have tried a couple times and I receive an alert about how they targeted person is on an older software. Those who I am already connected with continue to work even if they're on older software

My watch has started behaving a little strange since installing the OS6 betas.

I can have the watch on all day but it may think I've removed it several times throughout the day, requiring me to input my password.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

Has anyone had any issues with airplane mode? I have to have my phone and watch in airplane mode for airplane mode to work on the watch. I’m a weirdo I keep my watch in airplane mode quite a bit unless I’m working out or just updating the health app.

Have you definitely got the strap tight enough? Also, if you get overly sweaty that can cause problems with the watch thinking it’s not on you anymore.

Does anyone know how I can remove Photos from my Siri watch face? It seems like the data sources option in WatchOS 5 was either removed or moved elsewhere.

Did have a blip yesterday, my watch battery ran out in 9 hours. Not sure how or why though.

I’ve had that sort of run today. Not that short but way shorter than normal. Think it might have been LTE (was away from my phone) and weak signal

I normally download the betas but always regret it. How is stable is the software now ? I am fed up of waiting fo the official release.
