I have a Watch 2. I have the GPS problem. I believe it started when I upgraded my iPhone XR to iOS 14. Now, workouts since that date do not save GPS data at all. On workouts before that date, the GPS data is gone and no map is displayed.

I tried unpairing and repairing my watch. Big mistake. It took a long time. It didn't work. And, it deleted all my credit cards from Apple Pay. Why did it do that?

Update: For each of my Bank of America credit cards I received an email notice that said: "Your credit card has been deleted from Apple Pay." But, when I look at the Wallet app on my phone, both cards are still there. When I look at the BofA app on my iPhone, it says that both cards are activated for Apple Pay. WTF?

anytime you remove a device from your account it disables the Apple Pay cards for that device. Just how it works. Simple enuf to re-add them.

they were removed from the watch not the phone. Two different setups. Apple Pay is specific to the individual hardware.

hopefully Apple will fix whatever is wrong with ios14 that’s affecting users.

It would be nice if I had been told this at some point. Every message I got by email said something like this: Your credit card has been deleted from Apple Pay®

No mention of the watch or that the cards had not been deleted from the iPhone

But, before I got the "Your credit card has been deleted...." message I got two email messages from Bank of America saying: Hi, Customer, please activate your virtual card in Apple Pay® The email included a "verification code", but there was no place to enter it. The Wallet app on my iPhone showed all cards as active. The BofA app on my iPhone said that both cards were ready for Apple Pay. Why did a get a verification code before I got a notice that the cards had been removed?

How about something more meaningful like: "Your credit card has been deleted from Apple Pay on your Apple Watch"? How hard would that be?

Take it up with your bank if their messaging isn’t clear to you.

The message I got on the phone (presumably from Apple), asking me to pick a method to verify the card, wasn't any clearer. No mention that the card was being removed from just the watch.
Apple isn’t going to call you about card verification, talk to your card issuer.

When you add a card to your phone, you also have the option of adding it to your watch.

Those two wallets / cards are separate.

If you unpair your watch, any cards are deleted from your watch.

You could have checked your wallet on your phone and seen the cards there in under five seconds. Heck, a side button double chick would’ve shown them.

Anyway, now that you know the two are separate, just re-add any cards to your watch that you need on your watch. Open the Watch app on your phone and go to Wallet & ApplePay

Who said anything about a phone call? I got a notification on my iPhone telling me that I had to verify my cards for Apple Pay. There was no mention that this was only for the watch. For each card I was given options on how to get a verification code. I did that. But, there was no place to enter the code. An hour or so later, after the re-pairing was complete, I finally got notifications on my phone that each of the cards was ready for verification. Of course, by then all the codes had expired so I has to re-request them all.

Oddly, on my iPad my Capitol One card also had to be reverified.

There were also a number of other glitches. Unit’s for workouts on the watch were in miles, but still in kilometers on the iPhone. That’s fixed. NowPlaying no longer starts up automatically on the watch. That’s not fixed.

And, after all that hassle and effort I still don’t have GPS data for any of my past workouts, including today’s. I did a wonderful off-road cycling trip today near my home in Northeast Thailand. I was really looking forward to being able to look at the GPX file to see exactly where I’d been. It was a huge disappointment that there is no data only to follow that disappointment with two hours of re-pairing hassle.

You wrote “message I got on the phone (presumably from Apple)” suggesting a phone call/voicemail. Clearly I misunderstood

I’m also sorry I bothered to try to assist you.

Good luck.

Just noticed my monthly challenges are gone? Last one I did was May the app says but no current challenge and I am quite sure I had accomplished at least one between May and September?

Anyone else noticing this?

Apple has now released a support document detailing this problem and what to do about it. The support document doesn't seem to recognize the fact that even those of us who did not (or could not) upgrade to WatchOS 7 have the same set of problems after upgrading their phones to iOS 14.

Here's the link: If you're missing Workout GPS routes or Health data after updating to iOS 14 and watchOS 7

Unfortunately the fix involves unpairing your watch and phone, resetting all content and settings from your phone, restoring from backup and repairing the watch and phone. This will be time consuming and tedious.

Apple needs to do better.

They say to use iCloud for the backup, so they push people to buy iCloud storage.
I would like to know if there is a reason why I should use iCloud like it backs up less data and allows a deeper wipe or if it’s purely a move to get people to subscribe.
I also believe that they should say if a patch is on the way or if this is their solution and good luck. I don’t want to go through the painful process of setting up all the banking apps and stuff and my partner has apps set up from her workplace that she would have to get her IT department to configure again.
I find this extremely ridiculous

I did the backup for the apple watch and unpair. I then did the backup of the iPhone and nuke n paved it. When I restored the iPhone from the backup and then repaired the apple watch everything was back to the way it was. I had issues where the maps were not showing and the bars were not showing either. The rings would fill up but instead of 13 bars (13 hrs showing on the rings) I would often only have 8-9 bars.

Fingers crossed and knock on wood.... everything seems fine now. Other than the poor battery life in IOS14 and watchOS7

It is. And very sad if this is the best Apple can offer.

100% agree. They have to fix it. No way I am going to do this ridiculous procedure. Neither have the time and also do not want to risk my iPhone and watchOS.

Good luck with that. Let us know how waiting on Apple works out. Maybe it will. Guess it depends on how unimportant collecting the data is to you.

In fairness though, this "ridiculous process" is effectively the same thing everyone does upon purchasing a new phone and preparing their old phone for trade/resale. Don't see any complaints about it then for some reason.

If you have insufficient icloud storage, use your computer for the backup/restore process.

i assume that the backup on the computer is backing up more data and then it would end up restoring the issue too, that’s why they probably recommend iCloud, but iCloud is not free and this is the fundamental issue.

then there is the issue with Catalina’s iPhone backup working one out of ten attempts.

Don't understand me wrong, I do not mean that you posted something ridiculous.
For me, the data is not that important, it is nice to have as my workout apps produce the correct results and I just keep the data in Apple Health for backup purposes and do my activity ring tracking with it. So I can wait although I am nerved still. But not too bothered to risk my iPhone and watch and be working on this for hours.

What they have broken, they can fix is my motto.

*shrug* Don't do the fix then. Maybe a future iOS update will fix it. Or maybe not.

I'm not going to waste time on assumptions, and fussing about 99 cents for a month of 50GB storage after spending several hundred dollars on a luxury item is just silly.

I’ve got plenty of iCloud storage. What I don’t have right now is the time to fool with this. When I buy a new phone I know that I’m going to have to go through a restore and setup and can plan accordingly. Tomorrow I get up early, drive to the airport in Bangkok, fly to Hat Yai, get in a van to Songkhla and spend five days on a dive boat with no Internet. When that trip is done I’ll have one brief overnight at home and on the road again to Chonburi, Cha Am and Bangkok. I won’t be able to carve out enough time with decent Internet for at least ten days.

I guess I should have planned my travel with Apple induced bugs in mind.

I actually followed all the steps before that article came out on the advice of the fourth Apple Health support team member I spoke with. It absolutely SUCKED - hate logging into every single app again, hate setting up Apple Wallet on my phone again, you know the drill - but...it did solve every single one of my many many issues. Didn't lose any achievements or awards, GPS data restored on workouts (except for those logged during the buggy period).

Absurd that this is their only answer. Completely, completely absurd.

Not sure if anyone else has this issue. With the new update my total calories are all messed up. I used to burn 2000-3000 resting calories. Not I am maxing at 1200. Same life style and workouts.

Yep, that's part of the bug with the update, just one of many many issues. Check this thread for the solution (I did it and it fixed all the issues for me, but be warned it's horrible!) https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apple-suggests-restoring-iphone-and-apple-watch-to-fix-excess-battery-drain-or-missing-gps-data.2258013/

Anyone else having issues installing OS7.0.1? I have both devices on their chargers, at least 50% charge and keep getting an error message about wifi. BTW, I have an iphone6s and Apple Watch4.

Thanks. Honestly seems too painful, hopefully next update solves and it comes quick!!

Yeah, if you're not super obsessed with keeping tabs on your Health data I'd honestly skip it and just pray that a functioning update isn't too far off. Wiping your phone is such a huge pain, especially with increased usage of 2FA.

FWIW, you can go into the Health app and manually add resting and/or active calories so your trends stay accurate, just go into each section and hit Add Data in the top right. It's not perfect but if that's something you care about, it's one way to get around it. I did it a few times - just calculated the difference between Fitness/Watch active calories vs. Health and added that # into the active energy section, and the difference between my typical resting calories (1600) into resting energy. But just two things to be aware of: adding resting calories in Health won't change your total calories in the Fitness app (Fitness will still only reflect your active calories + what Health thinks your resting calories are), AND you should input the data at a "time" when you were relatively inactive since it won't add the full amount if you were already active at that particular time. (Not at which time you literally add it - Health prompts you to select a time when editing data. I usually picked 4am or something.)
