Have you guys suddenly started getting “Fastest 5K” and “Fastest 10K” medals? Mine have given me both two days in a row even though I have run faster in the past
No - only the usual silver 5/10k for completing the distance, not the golden one for a PR… (though I do hope to get one this coming Saturday! 😃)

No. I only get these annoying „Congrats you ran 5k/10k/HM“ medals after every run.

Weird I’m alone with medals. Thought it was a bug
If you’re getting this consistently, do report it - there might be something specific in your setup/data…

There’s one medal bug for sure, the golden HM medal. For whatever reason it’s displaying a 20k time instead of 21.1. And that’s a bit annoying, teasing me with time that I can only wish I had achieved 🙄 😃

Yeah might look into it. How about the heart rate. Mine has been a bit off lately. Todays 5K run it started displaying it was 170-180 which it absolutely wasn’t (an easy run today). I stopped shortly and it seemed like it caught up and displayed it correctly for the rest of the run (140-145ish)

It has also been a long time snapping at the start of runs some times. Think there is an issue

I suspect it’s environmental, not perfect in colder months - when digging around, I found a mention somewhere in these forums that when capillaries shrink due to cold, the optical sensors may have problems reading the HR.

Attaching an example of what I sometimes see - the HR data is missing for several minutes only to catch up later. I’m actually considering getting a separate HR strap to get more accurate readings.

Yes, what @Jana_CZ said. Cold temperatures or chilly winds can impact optical heart rate accuracy.
So it can come to locking issues and such.
Would not rely on the wrist based HR. Works most times but not all times for me.

watchOS 9 brings new watch faces, updated sleep tracking capabilities, new Workout features, and a Medications app for tracking medications, vitamins, and supplements.

I have had the same thought - I have only this year started to focus on a couple of extra easy runs per week, where I like to focus on zone 2/3 heart rate - and the example with yesterday where it just shows way higher before taking a short stop, seems weird.

See these examples as well: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...k-spikes-and-stays-high.2371955/post-31932011

Optical heart rate on wrist works good for me indoors, e.g. for strength training.
Most of the time during summer also, but not always. In winter time, the results are quite mixed.
I can recommend buying an optical heart rate sensor like Polar Verity Sense for the upper arm. Works like a charm and is not as annoying as a chest strap.

I have hardly ever relied on the built-in optical sensor during runs. It's usually not reliable for me when doing something atheltic and I've attributed that to cold wrists and hands which I do have. The optical sensor is more reliable for me during the hot summer months but I'm so used to running with my Polar H10 heart rate chest strap that that's the one I use when I go running.

@NME42 , you mentioned you don't like heart chest straps. What do you find annoying about them? I've found them to be absolutely reliable.

Annoying is maybe too strong. I find OHR straps more comfortable and almost as accurate.

Did have some chest straps that caused rashes. Also quite a few that sometimes produced bizarre results.
Have two excellent Polar H10 straps here. But since I own a Verity Sense I only use them for rowing.

…hmmm okay no medal, not gold, not silver, because the Watch is convinced it was only 4.97 km 🙄 😂 (interestingly, the import of the same run to Strava shows as 5.03 which is about right - it was on a certified 5k route so definitely it wasn’t shorter)

BUT, got my PB anyway, and finally got under the magical 25 mins finish time. Two things helped greatly: setting the pacer (I’ve set it to 24:50 and finished in 24:48), and changing the voice notifications from the default each 1 km to each 100 m. That prevented me from going too fast with the crowd right after the start, i.e. I didn’t run out of fuel too quickly as I usually did in the past, and also nudged me any time I got too slow. Pacer will nudge you just once and then will stay quiet till you get your average back on track, so getting audio feedback every ~30s was super helpful! 👍

Reliable - yes, but not so comfortable perhaps..? I’m currently deciding whether to get a chest strap or an optical band to wear on the upper arm, and am leaning towards the latter. First, I hate having to adjust anything under all those carefully layered layers out in the cold 😃 and secondly, chafing - shorter runs would probably be ok, but pretty much all sports bras (and I’m careful to choose really well fitting ones) are causing me abrasions/bruises in anything longer than 15-20 km… 😒 so I’d expect that the chest strap would be similar to the bra band.

Speaking of these medals. We complained about these silly medals we get after every run. For an experienced and regular runner this is really ridiculous.

Even more ridiculous, this morning I got an additional medal for my 10km run (which was 19,4 km to be precise) congratulating me for my run yesterday.

I maybe go out on a limb here, but there is not much AI in the background that generates these medals.

Yeah and my run today 20,4 km gave me that ****** “Yay 10 km just finished”

So when running a 160km ultra run one gets a „Congrats you ran a marathon!“? Gotta try this out.

Well, maybe I am too critical in nature as a German. Would also be sceptical if my boss thanks me for coming to work every day. ;-)

Yeah and if you do something out of the ordinary, the medal is spot on. Your first 10K or if it’s a long time since you did it last. Or always for a half or full marathon it’s okay. But these 5K and 10K medals every single time takes a bit of shine away

I'm getting frustrated with the routes feature again.

Ok so I have a route. It's 6km. I've done the route lots of times and it shows up in the routes selection. However, a couple of months ago the route became unavailable as some building works has started on part of it - so now I go around that section. It's about a 500m detour (still comes out around 6km through).

Having the Workout app deal with this is absolutely impossible. If I try and use that route again, it says I'm too far off the route and it stops doing the comparison. Ok fair enough. But now I run the route using the Open setting and it never collates these runs into a new route with the new section. Presumably because it's too similar to the old one. I tried swiping and deleting the old route, but that does literally nothing - open the app again and it's back.

So how the hell do I get it to stop seeing the old route and start seeing the new one? To make matters worse, this is actually happening two my two main routes (6k and 10k) because I've had to adjust the start of both of them.

This feature feels like it was developed in isolation away from the rest of the world. When it works, it's great. When it doesn't, it's a PITA.

@Akrapovic , interesting experience you have there. I haven't encountered those situations you described.

How many times have you run that "detoured 500m" route and are you running it as an Open rather than running it while using "Race Route"?

I’ve run the alternative one at least 3 times now. The first time it was part of the route - and that’s when it told me I was too far away for this run to be matched against the previous one. And that’s fair enough.

But the others I have been using open.

Interesting.

Have you run the alternate as an open for at least 2, but preferably 3 times? I believe last time I checked, documentation from Apple said that one has to run the same route twice before it shows up as a Race Route. In my experience, it seems to be that I have to run the route at least 3 times before it can be a Race Route.
