So the biggest news for OSX is going to be the change from Galaxy images to Waves for the default desktop background

- unfortunately we had no time to actually implement the new flat design in OSX or actually improve something, since all team members had to help getting iOS 7 out in time.

I'm still holding out for White Lion.

I think the top candidates are: Ocelot, Sabertooth, and Lynx.

Lynx I think is least likely just because it sounds too much like Linux.

A long dead extinct species.... Could be fitting if you expect OS XI anytime soon.

10.7 Lion
10.8 Mountain lion
10.9 Sea Lion?

In my opinion Sea Lion will be the bridge from OSX and OSXI which will use sea related names. It will be an introduction to the next ten years, avoiding a Win8 shock effect to the users.
Of course I am speculating just for the fun of it.

Being a huge fan of Helvetica Neue ultra light--it's a really gorgeous font--whatever the actual design changes to either OS, this makes me happy to see. I wanted to use that font as a heading font on a website so much that I spent days tracking down a free near-clone that looked good in all caps (Lane, if you're curious), and it was totally worth it.

Fun fact: "Neue", being German, is not pronounced "new", it's pronounced "no-ya" (or something close to that).

Anybody else think this will happen?

2013: OS X & iOS 7
2014: OS X & iOS 8
2015: OS X & iOS 9
2016: iOS X

Edit:
Oh yeah and a couple more things to add
2017: iOS X
2018: iOS X
2019: iOS X (see a pattern?)

Also, many of you seem to think this implies a merging of the OS's (which it very well may), but I think it's more likely that iOS will just replace OS X. But obviously iOS would have a lot of catching up to do... 3 years isn't much time. Look back as iOS 4 (3 years ago), and doesn't seem like it's moved a whole lot since then...

Lame. This banner reminds me of that period of time between the late 80's and 90's when Jobs was gone and Apple drifted way off course from one lame idea to the next.

Huh? The only thing that banner tells you is there is a new version of OSX. The only thing you can read into it, is that there is possibly a new focus on ultra-slick minimalist design.

I don't understand how either of those things could be called 'lame', as you so eloquently put it.

As a nobody i find that horrible.

What don't you like about it, and what would you prefer?

Wave of the Future

The wave reminds me of the Katsushika Hokusai Wave artwork.

Great font too.

Like the new "X" logo; however this seriously invites the question on what Apple is planning to do with OS X in terms of strategy. Since, there's no reference to a cat in the banner as in previous years I think it's safe to assume that this OS X will not have a cat name. Maybe this new version will be called OS X 9, last year's decision of re-naming Mac OS X into simply "OS X" I believe it was Apple's way of saying that "OS X" is now a marketing name rather than an actual product name.

We will know for sure on Monday. I just hope that the simplified font means that OS X is being refined a la Snow Leopard :).

People are suggesting Sea Lion. Maybe it's the perfect animal to use to transition from land to sea creatures. Far stretch but just a thought...

Maybe Apple will change to Fish names, but I guess this wave stands for something else:
I think OS X will get a new fresh design. This design will be influenced by the feeling you get when you're listening to magnificent beach house music and enjoying and ice cold beer on the beach!

Ive is a follower of the Rams Design school and he listens to house music - great combination to create a flat fresh OS X!

And +1: I guess that Mountain Lion was the last cat name for OS X.
Cats names are funny but now I think they are dispensable.

Makes me wonder... What are they going to do for OS XI??

Well, they could go the Spinal Tap route; i.e., "It goes to 11".

I always thought the Bear would be a good run of animals to name it after, but beyond Kodiak the names don't really flow (brown? grizzly?).

Planets? Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, etc., or too easy to slander? (e.g., Uranus)

Birds of Prey maybe? Eagle, Osprey, Hawk, Kite, etc.

Sharks? Hammerhead, Mako, Blue. Of course, that would mean a repeat on Tiger. And of course you couldn't use the Lemon Shark.

Fast and lean is why they went with cats. I'm pretty sure they'll go with something that continues to embody that.
