There are serious side effects with the female birth control pill, such as blood clots, heart attack and strokes. So the female is taking a risk. If they are healthy and don't smoke, it decreases the risk.
I knew that, but thanks anyway.

According to the article this doesn't have any side effects.
Yeah... and I'm Bill Gates. :p

The pill just works on the protein that effects motility of the sperm. A flagella like movement, no motility no conception. This is reversible by stopping the medication. The pill would require consistency on the part of the man to take the pill.
So mess this up and.......they.....never....swim....again?

They swim backwards and come out your ears. :p
I don't think that would be healthy. And backwards would mean coming out your ass, no?

She is right. A lot of men would lie saying that they took the "Pill". Women on the other hand have a lot more to lose if they get pregnant. If the relationship is a long term one then it is a totally different matter, because some women can't take the Pill.

Bullcrap... I personally know several men who slept with a woman who said she was on birth control, but was not. The women lied because they were each desperate to get pregnant, either because they wanted child support money or were simply desperate for a baby or a husband.

Personally I'd be all over it. The female pill is 99% effective if taken properly, which almost never happens. The "typical" effective rate is closer to 95%. That 5% makes me nervous. If I could also take a pill that would have a typical effective rate of 95%, that would give a combined effectiveness of 99.75%, which would make me feel better about things.

I know a european firm has been working on a male version of Norplant, which is a series of implants in the upper arm that provide a steady stream of sperm-stopping goodness. Havn't heard anything on that for about a year. They estimated it would take 5-7 years to enter the US market.

Probably not...The way I read it, the presence of drug stops the sperm's expression of the necessary protein...Even if you totally screwed up a particular sperm so that it could never express the protein again, that shouldn't affect sperm that hasn't been produced yet...Remember, sperm has a very high turnover. And remember, the spermatangia (is that the right word?) that produce the sperm don't express this protein anyway (they aren't motile), so there's probably no risk in hurting the source in this way.

As might a lot of women. I'll bet more men wouldn't lie than would but that probably doesn't fit in to your nice men bad, women good mentality.

From what i hear from the girls i know ... Norplant has caused the greatest discomfort of any BC and can and does cause still births. This stuff aborts your babies more than it stops preagnancies. don't take it.

peace.

Gotcha. Well, lets see if it gets past the FDA first, shall we?

1) How many men would honestly be willing to subject themselves to the chemical manipulation of their reproductive system?

I know others have written this, but you're assuming an extremely gung-ho attitude on the behalf of males in general. Believe it or not some of us take a responsible attitude towards trying to overcome nature.

2) How many women would weigh up the risk of getting pregnant against a man's word that he had been taking his pills?

Men weigh up this "risk" daily, you'll be surprised to hear. I'm not entirely sure why you are implying that a man's word is any better or worse than a woman's. You might want to contact these nice people to add some validity to that opinion.

Maybe its something about the way I have sex or where my penis is but I'm pretty certain backwards would upwards. Or leaking?! ;) :p

It seems that you have no faith in the medical profession or pharmaceutical manufactures. How sad, you may need them some day.

Absolutely. I don't even think they're doing pre-clinical trials on their first compound, are they? Isn't this just a lead?

Blind faith is almost never good. A little bit of skepticism is just right. It's better for a patient to understand that medicine has its limitations and that nothing is a pill-popping, works-in-a-vacuum, perfect cure.

I actually already need the pharmaceutical manufactures far more than I would like. I will not tell you what drugs I am on but I am on one right now that thank G-d has worked for the past 2.5, 3 years or so. And it isn't holding up so well unfortunately. Springtime sucks for me in general-- there was a study done on this, don't remember the name. And considering my dad is in the medical profession I tend to be biased towards the medical profession.

Questioning is not a bad thing. Some of my replies were sarcastic. Some were not. But overdosing-- someone will, some time. Be it an accident, on purpose, whatever, it will happen. And I am wondering what will happen.
And no side effects. Yeah. Right. I've been on some drugs that said that they had no side effects or little side effects and had night terrors. NOT nightmares, but night terrors. Things that are burned into my memory. And I have a really good memory, borderline photographic.

Believe nothing of what you hear and nothing of what you can see. It is true these days. Remember Serevent? That was great for me with my asthma. Well I chucked that in the trash not too long ago. This is also burning into my memory: "The companies own trials had to be stopped to the number of deaths." I felt really good after that line. Really ****ing good.

if it was like a monthly pill or something (as in a single pill a month) and was proven over a long timescale that it was without side effects (of which there are few medicines, even paracetamol can cause side effects!), then i might try it. but not a daily, like most women's pills. screw that.
