Didn't that same press release say mobileme would also be release on 7/11? We now know that is not the case

No... MobileMe was NEVER given a release date, only "early July". 2.0, however, has been given a July 11th release date. I sincerely hope the Q&A is right though, and we get 2.0 sometime tomorrow.

At one point I thought they would release 2.0 slightly early, but I now I really don't think they will. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have it early so I can play around with the apps. It will keep me busy while waiting for the 3G phone.

After the 3G phone is released in NZ, that also means the 2.0 firmware has to be posted. What if people have trouble and need to reset, the files need to be made available.

They could prevent premature release of the firmware with geofiltering. However, will iTunes not install the firmware from another country ? I can't imagine Apple having a separate build for every country.

They might be able to do some funky stuff with the signed images.

One can only hope :D

If it's ready to go in NZ, I can't see why Apple would hold it back from everywhere else. The quicker they get it out there the quicker they start selling Apps. Also, buzz about the new firmware/apps could help drive demand for the 3G.

I use .Mac on my iPhone.

If Apple takes down .Mac and releases MobileMe tomorrow, I just hope everything continues to work (email, etc). Otherwise, I'll need 2.0 to keep my iPhone working.

They could release 2.0 to coincide with Mobile Me early, and simply not enable the App Store until Friday like it is now with the Beta's.

This would make sense, since the AppStore won't be able to download content for the US store until its launched on Friday. 8am each timezone, that timezones store goes live.

I doubt seriously that they release 2.0 before Friday. Apple doesn't want first gen iPhone users playing around with 2.0 and realizing they really don't need a 3G iPhone. They want us standing in line like the lemmings we are.

Looking at the info on .mac it says it is taken offline at 6 and it will be off line for a minimum time untill the work is done. I guess that the 12 being quoted is a maximum time. So maybe .me can be used by 7.

Does the interaction with all the various mac software mean that a ox update is also required?

.me does not 2.0 to work cos it works on the mac and pc in its own right.

3G isn't aimed at existing iPhone users, although I'm sure many will upgrade. It's aimed at European and Asian markets where 3G is the minimum standard, and picky US users who wouldn't accept anything less.

Apple does want existing users playing with 2.0, because that will mean App sales.

The thing that will tip the balance on upgrading for me... apps that need SPEEDY 3G.

Can you imagine a Hulu app for the iPhone?

Or sling box for iPhone.

Streaming media is really the only reason I want the 3G.

GPS is of course nice as well... but more of a bonus.

Tomorrow

As much as I agree that 2.0 will probably come out tomorrow and the App Store won't be switched on until Friday, (like the phones being opened at Apple Retail as we speak), does anyone remember the iPhone activation nightmare that some people had last year because servers were backed up? The last thing Apple needs is to have existing iPhone owners trying to use the App store at the same time as new 3G users and have App Store problems because of the flood of the servers. They'd be smart to open the App Store before Friday for current iPhone owners.

I fully agree. With all the evidence it looks as though the 2.0 software should be released with the App store tomorrow. But we're talking Apple so who knows. I can see why and why not the App store being released tomorrow, but the MobileMe evidence supports a Wednesday launch. Fingers Crossed!

Is Apple really going to shaft New Zealand users new to iPhone with no App Store and hold off the extra day for the US launch? At the very least we should have the App Store by 8 AM EST, on Thursday, that's when iPhone 3G's go on sale in New Zealand. Am I right? Plus for my previous post I forgot to account for all the iPod Touch owners. Does Apple really want a potential upwards of 6 million people trying to hit the App Store at once? Wow.

I'm more excited about the 2.0 update than the 3G iPhone.

^^^^ same

also,

everyone who thinks steve jobs and apple will 'geofilter' so US doesnt get firmware until friday -- think of this

would apple really prevent people from using 2.0 for TWO DAYS and spend the time and energy to work on the geofilter just so we dont get it until FRIDAY??

Well, since they use Akamai as their CDN. It takes only a few minutes to setup geofiltering on file delivery.

Lets not forget, they already have these capabilities in the appstore it self.

Would Apple do this for 2 days ... I don't doubt it for a second.

However, that won't stop people from "sending the firmware" out.

question:

i buy super monkey ball and install it on my first gen iPhone tomorrow night. then i buy the iPhone 3g on friday. can i also install it on the iPhone 3g without buying another copy? how does that work? is it like games on the iPod? i've never had an iPod so i don't know how purchasing games works when it comes to that.

I truly believe we're getting 2.0, mobileme and most likely the appstore tomorrow. My original post here is copy/pasted from Apple's site. It says on Apple's site verbatim "This software update will be available when MobileMe launches."...and MobileMe launches tomorrow....so unless they are completely lying for NO REASON, we're going to have it tomorrow because the announcement that mobileme is coming tomorrow is straight from apple, right?

They want to get people rolling with mobileme and the linking with the mobile device (mobileme) is one of the biggest features of it (it's called MOBILEme so the mobile part is a big deal) - so there is no reason they would bother switching from .mac yet if they werent ready with the mobile part of mobileme..and the mobile part of mobileme involves firmware 2.0. So get your cords ready. It could hit anytime in the next 24 hours.

You usually get 3-5 "licenses" like when you buy songs. You can put it on 5 different computers (maybe its 3 with games). I assume it's going to work like that.

here's something to think about:

would apple say "this software update will be available when MobileMe launches" if they were going to release it later?

That's what I'm saying! Somehow people keep disregarding it haha
