I have the new OLED iPad Pro and I honestly can’t tell much difference from my previous iPad Pro. The screen is fine, but certainly not as vivid as I expected. I suspect two things might have impacted sales: the higher cost of the new iPad and the fact that older iPads still work just fine.
I think the latter is the major point. I looked at updating my 2020 Air, but it is still doing fine, my wife's iPad mini, on the other hand, was too small for her and much slower than the Air, so we upgraded that to the current Air 2024.

I have an Air 2024 at work and it is very nice and it is a little quicker in some things than my personal Air, but not enough for me to invest in it (edit: yes, if I was doing high-end stuff, I'd probably see more of a difference, but loading web pages, email etc. not so much. Also, not having Apple Intelligence available over here means that upgrading for that is also not a necessity). The same is true for most of the iPad Pros, I would think. They are still "good enough" for most non-power users, so there is less need to update.

One the other hand, the Air is worth 230€ trade-in at the moment, so the price would only be 469€ after trade-in... But I'm looking at replacing my Mac mini with a MacBook Pro at the moment, so even though the trade-in is tempting, I'll probably go with the new MBP instead.

I hate to keep sounding like a broken comment record, but until iPadOS does more, there is no point in spending so much money on an iPad Pro when software wise it is the same as an iPad or iPad Air. No point.
Exactly. The other big issue is that the devices never used to go on sale, so you could buy one day 1, and sell your old one for 60-75% of the value of the new one. Now you're lucky to get half of the value.

I want a new iPad, but can't justify it when the new ones don't do anything different than my 4th gen iPad Pro.

I know there is a difference but it's not enough to make my M1 iPad look bad so I have stayed with my older device. The M1 also performs like new on the tasks I use it for, including video and photo editing. Until it needs to be updated, I will not be a user of the OLED display model but if I were in the market for a new device, it would be the one I would buy.

I started using Apple gear in late 1989 and owning in 1990. You pay to play in the Apple world. Top performance costs more.

Ferrari performance comes in a Ferrari at Ferrari prices, not Ford prices or models.

If one does not want to spend lots not money, then Apple has lower cost options at lower price points with reduced capability.

Pretty simple really. Many products have multiple price points and as the price goes up, so does the device's capabilities.

One gets what they can afford in a car and a computer/electronic device.

I appreciate the move to OLED and personally, most limitations of iPadOS do not hit me too hard, but even the cheapest models are above 1k (Euro) over here and my 2020 models are still ok, so the case for an upgrade is rather weak right now. I would have bought an iPad Pro Mini with OLED, but apparently Apple doesn't want to sell me one (to be fair: they still made money - I bought the Mini 7 anyway).

An M1 iPad Pro or iPad Air from 3 years ago still won't be pushed to the limits by what 95% of people use an iPad for, so it's not surprising that there's not a compelling use case. It's a dual problem. There are shortcomings with iPadOS that need to be addressed, but developers also need to step up and deliver truly full-featured apps instead of watered down iPad versions. The latter is not solely the fault of iPadOS.

Do people really still get excited about iPads? They felt more useful way back when phones were tint. my home one gets used like twice a week to look at a recipe while cooking or watch a simple show sitting at the table. My work iPad gets used a lot more but mostly to take photos and write measurements on it and it's a 2018 and I don't care to upgrade.

I currently still use my 12.9” iPad Pro M2. I was going to upgrade to M4 but one thing is a real turn-off for me….moving the front camera from portrait to landscape orientation. I use my iPad like an iPad, mostly in portrait orientation with Apple Pencil. Like pen and paper; iPad dimensions are A4 paper.

The most extremely boring way to use an iPad is with the Magic Keyboard. Putting the camera in landscape orientation basically says put the iPad in the keyboard case and use it like a laptop. Using iPad like a laptop means you do basic things that don’t require M4, M2 is good enough.

However, due to sluggish sales of OLED ‌iPad Pro‌ models, the ‌iPad Air‌'s switch from LCD to OLED could be delayed by more than a year, according to DSCC.

I hope Apple is smart enough to realize the OLED display is not the problem.

The problem is there aren’t enough people with more money than sense to buy these things. Sure it’s a fantastic TV, but iPadOS is a joke.

I read that recent article by Federico where he finally is using an iPad Pro for everything because he bought an external device for podcasting. This whole article is incredible. So much money and effort and time wasted just to not use a Mac.

The only people I’ve seen seriously using an iPad Pro for work is a lawyer. Which makes sense. If you have tons of money and basically only need to read and write on paper, then yeah it might work for you.

The demand for OLED isn’t weak. It’s the price. And as others have mentioned. iPadOS isn’t taking the full potential of the chip inside. I actually sold my M2 iPad Pro and got a Mini. I have a MacBook Pro if I need to do anything processor intensive.

The dirty secret with iPads is that just about everyone does super basic things with them

Any iPad basically works for almost everyone (percentage wise)

The amount of super tech folks actually using the "Pro" stuff is absolutely microscopic

Apple should really re-think the entire iPad lineup and focus on getting things like OLED displays, of varying quality levels if need be, across all models ... and probably simplify the lineup

We get it now -- iPadOS is never going to be a useful replacement for macOS for everyone.

Let's start acting that way Apple and pivot the hardware to better match with what people actually do with iPads

...scroll and watch

But, but.. all the real armchair pros online are saying it's better than bacon!

The iPP isn't overpriced for the hardware you get, it's just largely eye-candy and hard to justify unless you have specific needs and assets for it.

That this fantastic piece of hardware is held back by iPadOS also needs to be factored in, it's a real problem at this point.

That's the problem with the iPad Pros is that you're paying premium prices for something that doesn't really justify that extra cost. You can buy the cheap iPad for $349 and do almost everything the Pros can do minus Apple Intelligence (for now) and Stage Manager

uh oh, I guess the iPad Pro is dead. /s

I still have my iPad Pro 12.9 M1 512GB with plenty of space to spare. There is no need to upgrade hardware wise for me.

You're making a joke, but it honestly might not be far off

The difference here is that there are other iPads in the lineup and they do the jobs needed of most iPad users just fine, for fractions of the cost

If there were an "Apple Vision" .. the "Apple Vision Pro" would indeed be in even more of a precarious situation
