Because ads revolve around eyeballs. The most profitable place to run ads is where they will be seen by the most eyeballs.

I get your want here- even wish for it too- but modern Apple clearly puts profit above all else. Don't be surprised if we eventually fire up our Macs and need to watch and then check a box that we DID watch a few commercials before we can start using it... like DVDs where you have to watch trailers before you can start the main feature. Once a corp starts making money on ads, they quickly find many more places to insert more ads.
That is the utter epitome of Meta...

I use Weather Underground a lot, and since the Weather Channel bought them, there has been a "News" feed attached to the site. It's not all gloom and doom if the topic stays on weather - I'll occasionally click a video or read an article: they range from "Check out this awesome thundersnow!" to "Here's a climate crisis topic," so it feels like a reasonably full palette if Apple goes this way.

What I'm really going to miss with Dark Sky are two features I don't see in Apple Weather (or, at least, can't find) - the Dark Sky Widget, and the scheduled notifications. In the middle of this transition, everything else so far feels like just re-learning where they put stuff that I knew how to use in Dark Sky.
The app hasn't been updated in four months...

$5 says we’re going to get climate change panic articles 🙄 (I don’t care about your politics, so don’t bother responding.)

I would like to control when and where I get my articles/news, thank you.

I do hope the news can be turned off, or forced off by deleting the News App.
If you don’t want to discuss politics, maybe don’t bring yours up like that. How about it 🤷‍♂️.

Dark Sky:

‘Uh Apple: can we buy our company back?’
I’m gonna be bummed come January 1st. Really love the various hourly tweaks: Precipitation Probability vs. Precip. Rate; Wind vs. Wind Gusts, etc. The Time Machine is like having an almanac in your pocket - perfect for vacation planning.

Ahhh yes. Reminds me of the good all days when Instagram was a great place to go to see photos simply and efficiently. And YouTube was a great place to go see videos simply and efficiently.

this post brought to you by Apple news.

what makes a tip on how to do something an ad?
I don't understand what you asked me.

Advertising is a marketing communication that employs an openly sponsored, non-personal message to promote or sell a product, service or idea. Sponsors of advertising are typically businesses wishing to promote their products or services.

It is a ad by definition. Same as unwanted information aka spam (mail & notifications) about free Apple Arcade or Music. Even after dismissing it multiple times I still got bothered by Apple. All services apps are not design anymore for consumption of your own library but rather for consumption of the new stuff. Now I'm being force-fed crap all the time. I have replaced all apple services apps with third party one to get away from it but now App Store is riddled with ads, Weather app is gonna be as well.

This is not Apple who's products I decided to buy from 10 years ago. This is some other Apple which I don"t like and I don't want to deal with. Luckily Android is much better then it use to be and there are plenty options around. I don't see myself being Apple customer for long.

Deleting the News App on phone still allows the stocks app to show you amateurish journalism about 'The Markets' e.g. from the Sun in the UK.

When will apple listen to the criticism people have for Apple News.

And why is the weather app so awful - you can't even re-arrange the tiles, or prioritise e.g. upcoming rain.

Just updated to iOS 16.2. I had already deleted news (and stocks). I see no news section in the weather app.

Panic over?

I hate this. Updated iOS today and, as soon as I saw that there’s no way to remove the stupid ad for AppleNews, I deleted Weather. I knew Apple would ultimately ruin Dark Sky.

@jakebrosy

I am on iOS 16.5.1 on my 13PM and I do not see Apple News or an ad for it anywhere in the weather app. I am also on iPad OS 16.5.1 on my M1 iPad Pro 11 and see no Apple News or an ad for it in the weather app there either. My favorite weather app was Dark Sky and I hated to see Apple take it over, but it is gone and Apple Weather is currently the best weather app available. It tells me when and how long it will rain and has been just as accurate as Dark Sky.

Screen shots of both iPad weather and iPhone weather. Where are the ads?

I see similar results. When I click on "Air Quality" (not the "Air Quality Alert", the box below that) I get another image of the AQI radar, with a box below that describing "Unhealthy" (happens to be 162 where I am) and THEN, below that, I see the "News", an article from Vox powered by Apple News.

Similarly, if you click on, say, the "UV Index" box, in the next screen that comes up, you'll see an Apple News article at the bottom

What do your news articles show? I see a "news article" in Air Quality and one in UV Index, but they are news articles on how to understand how to use the Air Quality and UV Index, and as you said, you have to click and open the boxes to even see them. I could see the big uproar if Apple was just picking and inserting general news articles, but these are weather news articles explaining how to use the features they are connected too.

OMG!

How utterly terrible of Apple for putting weather news in the weather app

I agree and I actually found them helpful (e.g. Vox's from your screenshot)
