Why does everyone hate this? These aren’t ads… I always loved seeing Apple apps co-mingling together. I think this is a neat feature.

They can use this space to share articles from News+, in which you have to pay. Boosting News+ subscription.

Think about why users need a weather app: to check how the weather will be tomorrow. The government's alert is enough to explain. We just need to catch a glimpse in a second, not to spend 5-10 mins and even more to consume the contents.

But now every tech company wants us to waste more time in our life for their money. In the past Apple just think we can use our phones not limited to the screen, but now they make it bigger and bigger with larger battery so that we can hardly leave the screen. This is their ways of driving economy.

If I need to save money, the traditional way of getting discount / buying cheaper things is no longer possible. If we want to kill the poverty, narrowing digital divide is no longer the way. If you can reject new tech, you will not have to pay more and more and you will have your life.

With the iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 updates, Apple is enhancing the Weather app through the integration of an Apple News section. Located below the 10-day forecast on iPhone, the Apple News module surfaces relevant regional news stories.

weather-app-news-integration.jpg

In Raleigh, for example, the app displays a story about hurricanes in the Atlantic, and in San Diego, there is a story about fire season. Content varies based on location, and tapping on a story shown in the Weather app opens up the Apple News app.

Not all cities show news stories at all times and it appears that when there's a weather alert at the top of the app, such as for rain or severe weather alerts, the news module is also removed. It is not clear if weather-related alerts are limited to select cities, or show up only when relevant information is available. As of now, the feature appears to be live only in the United States.

Apple appears to have introduced the new Weather app module server-side, but it is only showing up on devices that are running iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2, suggesting it is meant to be a new feature added with the beta updates.

If I want news from Apple ID take it, but I want them to fix their software (photos) and quit rearranging things.

My area never has any relevant regional news stories. Can I please never see any news in my weather? Two great tastes that taste great together this is not.

Honestly one of my biggest turn-offs for The Weather Channel app for iOS/iPad is the mess of videos, news stories, and other clutter in their app. I just want the weather! As long as Apple keeps this to just one panel it should be fine, though it would be nice if they introduced a way to customize the layout similar to how Carrot works (or if Carrot would get off their butts and update their macOS app).

Is this a plot to serve ads later?

If it’s just weather-related news, it’s not so bad, but I generally don’t like the idea of making the weather app into a newsfeed. I mean, specialization and focus is good.

It's probably going to ask you to download the News App. Even worst? Not sure someone needs to test-run this.
This is effectively an ad for Apple News. More clicks on Apple News articles drives more revenue for Apple and gives more opportunities to upsell to News+ subs.
Apple is working to complete their transition into another mindless Wall Street Xerox toner-head company.

Apple if you’re reading this, how about:

  • Sponsorship spots sold against wake up alarms: ‘Your morning 6am alarm is sponsored by mega-corp. Have a great day!’
  • Ad units in Settings: ‘Sounds & Haptics is bought to you by Evil Corp’
  • Photos will have ads inserted into your library. Think instagram video ads but cooler.
  • Video ad units injected into iMessage conversations.
  • Ditto audio 5 second ad units before and after phone calls & answer phone messages.
  • Also I’d like to see Apple News stories injected into your email inbox between every 3-5 emails.
  • Contacts could also have advertiser addresses added to people’s address books.l without them asking.
I mean I should be charging for those ideas but I’m giving them away for free.

Context sensitive ads: this wake up alarm brought to you by Lavazza! Photo of your crappy old car: click here to buy a brand new BMW! Ads in books: and this lull in the story is a fine time to have some soup! Campbell's soup!

German publisher actually did that in a printed Discworld book once:

What happens if you don’t subscribe to Apple news, you get a truncated half article? I work it’s another way to put ads in front of our eyeballs.

You get lots of ads in free articles. For Apple News+ articles, which are the majority, you can only read the titles. If you click into it, you will see a splash page with subscription options.

A few page down in the news section, you will also see lots of ads in between titles.

At lease this is the case for the Stocks app.

Why? We bought Dary Sky to not have this. We just want weather, accurate weather not news on weather.

As with everything that is added, I hope there's a way to disable it or hide it. I personally have no interest in seeing news about weather. All I want is to be able to get weather information in the form that it is currently in as in the forecast for today and the rest of the week. I don't need news stories about weather cluttering up the screen.

Dark Sky:

‘Uh Apple: can we buy our company back?’

Im still using Dark Sky and will do until they switch it off end of the year. The interface is clearer and less cluttered, and the layout is just more logical.

And I don't want to see any god awful 'Apple News' in my weather app.

Horrible decision. Don’t care though. Never used it, never will. I’m an amateur meteorologist, and I’m perfectly fine with CARROT Weather, RadarScope, and Windy, among many others.

The AccuWeather App for iOS (subscription version) has weather news. Its just clutter and a distraction.

Can't wait until Apple has ads when we unlock our device. It's coming soon I bet in 16.3! Tim Cook never misses an opportunity to take advantage of his loyal fan base.
