I am hoping that it is based around the standard HTML Push API but just with further OS integration. That API is supported by Firefox (and probably other browsers too) so would be useful so get widespread support from websites.

It's not.

I doubt many websites will support it if it is only useful for people using Safari on the very latest version of OS X as they would make up a small proportion of all visitors.

It does sound like a pretty hard sell, given the need for an Apple developer account and the restrictions that Apple will impose on the feature's usage.

I never said it was a bad thing. I was just noting how the similarities are increasing... such as launchpad

Try to remember that although launch pad was added to OS X, it hasn't replaced the desktop as the default starting point on your mac.
So although iOS and OS X may share a lot of features it seems unlikely they'll merge soon. Or even that os x's fate will mirror what has happened on Windows.

Here is the real question. If I click on the website's notification, will it open the link in my default browser or will it open Safari?

If it opens Firefox/Chrome, then I can see this being useful. Otherwise it's like iOS launching Apple Maps when you click an address - ********** annoying.

Have tried it out in Mavericks GM, it opens in default browser.

How is this different than the Push Notifications some websites currently use in Mountain Lion with Safari?

What's with the Safari disdain? Safari 7 is awesome and is the best browser out there, ESPECIALLY on a Mac.

If you haven't tried Safari 7 you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

Well that is because I do not have flash installed in my macs. So I use chrome because it has flash built in within the browser.

So far I've seen this on MacRumors and MLB.com (click on the banner at the top of MLB for notifications). Anyone see it elsewhere?

Twitter has pretty much obsoleted RSS.

I'm still struggling to fully grasp Twitter in place of Google Reader. I'm noticing that I'm missing so many headliners, and reading much less of everything. I'm left to wonder how anyone ever keeps track of trends with Twitter, especially those who're following 300, 400 and even more accounts. I mean, just HOW??

Hope this notification helps out a bit.

why don't you try out a different RSS reader?

Feedly comes to mind. Flipboard can be used too. Reeder is good too.

Yup, seems like it's super stable compared to 6, and also, I'm loving the dev tool! Unless Chrome updates its tools, I'm switching to 7 for dev browser.

Why so much hate already, without trying it out? I think this will be handy:

- Unlike readers, you don't have to be on that site to see updates
- You can get updates immediately (think of receiving eBay outbid updated instantaneously)
- Hopefully chat apps on web like Hangouts will make use of this too?

Anyways, I think this is great.

I think I have become used to notification centre only telling me about really, really important things. I enabled Macrumors for a few days and ended up turning it off because I don't really want a banner for every story.

I like the feature, think it will be a while until sites get the right balance and send the right number of notifications.

So how do I unsubscribe from push notifications then?

I answered 'Yes' when I saw a popup from MacRumors offering to send me push notifications, and according to the web page (https://www.macrumors.com/push/) I have to go to Preferences -> Notifications to unsubscribe.

In there, I see no feature allowing me to unsubscribe. I can move an entry to 'Not In Notification Center' but that still leaves me subscribed according to MacRumors. My searching so far on this topic has yielded nothing helpful on how to completely unsubscribe (in Mavericks, anyway).

So how do I do this? It's not that I dislike MacRumors, I just think notifications from websites are more spammy than I want to deal with, but I don't want to turn off the notifications feature completely. If I can subscribe to a feed, I should be able to just as easily unsubscribe to said feed when I so choose, yes?

So how can I do this? What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

Have tried it out in Mavericks GM, it opens in default browser.

Are you sure about that?

As somebody pointed out when I asked about WebKit Nightly, not all browser support it. Even when I have WebKit Nightly as the default, it opens t up in Safari.

Don't know what happened, but it DID open in Chrome for me at first when using the GM. Might have had some sort of browser app/plugin though, because now in a clean install of release version I can't get it to open in anything other than Safari.

Could have been a really good glitch?
