Hasn't this trope of Apple making "overpriced" product been proven otherwise by the very PC manufacturers who are now selling their devices at the same or higher prices than comparable Apple products?
I think it debatable. With PC’s you can get heavier discounts and rebates. Back in 2017 I bought a lenovo iedapad with all the bells a whistles (yes the build quality was good, 4K screen, touch, dedicated GPU, etc), it was basically a MacBook Pro rippoff. I paid 1500 with a $150 instant rebate. The same config in a MacBook Pro at the time would be close to $1k more at the time. Yes, I still think the MacBook is better because the OS is miles better than windows.

There is the problem. An Ipad isn't a computer no matter how much people or Apple want to claim it. It's still just "big iOS" with a few extras. The same frustrations and limitations- Files, share sheet, etc. The hardware is great but the software is 100% holding it back.

If you could run Mac OS I guarantee they would sell a boat ton regardless of the price. It would be the best tablet out that's a full computer. Windows tablets are basically trash (and the OS not very touch friendly).

About 2 years ago I got a refurb from Dell (looked brand new) XPS 13 touchscreen with an i7, 16gb of RAM and 512gb SSD for around $1150 before tax. There is no way you can sell me a 12.9 iPad with a keyboard for the same price of more. It's simply not worth it.

Unless you NEED a pencil, but even then you can get a Windows solution for less that does basically the same thing (absent the drawing part it is not as good), plus a ton more.
For some people, an iPad Pro is their computer and it works very well for them. Just because you and many others can't stick with an iPad as your computer doesn't mean it can't be one for someone else.

And what will this new 12.9 do better then the current 12.9 besides having a nicer screen?
It will have better cameras.

Editing/processing pictures and videos will be faster.

It might get 5G. My current 12.9" Pro is LTE.

FaceID might be better. Unlock the screen from more obtuse angles.

I’m waiting on new AirPods So this makes me sad. And if the 11inch doesn’t get Mini LED, I’ll feel vindicated in my Air purchase... but still a little bit sad that the product is fragmenting.

My 2018 iPad Pro is still going strong. I probably won’t be able to justify upgrading to the new iPad Pro, but you never know.

Part of the beauty of marketing to the consumer directly is that their purchasing decisions are ultimately their own, and don’t have to make sense to anyone but themselves.

I’m sure there are examples of devices where Apple is higher priced, but I think that for a lot of the comparably built laptops, primarily those designed to be thin and made of metal, not plastic, Apple’s MacBooks were and are still competitively priced. Now with the M1 MBP’s and MBA’s, it’s even more challenging for PC’s to show Apple as being overpriced for what you get performance and battery life-wise.

I’ve not bought or used a PC in more than 10 years, but remember how I’d get a work laptop that typically lasted a year, before needing to be replaced, while using my personal MBP, then MBA when I got it in 2011, that worked flawlessly for 7+ years. In fact, the last PC was a Lenovo that had to be returned twice (BSD issues in both cases) and I finally said I’d just use my own MBP so I could actually work. It’s another example of the value of Apple devices - you may pay more initially, but over time the cost of ownership drops below that of many cheap PC’s. If I remember correctly, IBM did a study where businesses spent far more maintaining PC’s compared to companies running Apple computers.

For me, having unlimited data on an iPad will always put iPad ahead of the MacBook. Sure, my needs are not intensive but I use a ton of data and never having to wonder if there’s WiFi available is huge for benefit my work/life. Add cellular to the MacBook and then I might think it over.
I have unlimited cellular data on my iPad Pro and it's awesome. But iPadOS has just been so lacking and I've been contemplating getting a macOS product again.

As for MacBooks, they do mostly everything right but there is no excuse for an M1 MacBook to not have cellular data since they solved the battery life problem. I don't know why Apple won't just add cellular already.

There is no Apple product that checks all the boxes as of yet. Hopefully this changes this year.

Sounds like I'm just adding to what's already been said, but I have wanted a pro for a while now but any price increase will drop me to an air, current gen pro with price drop or possibly a windows tablet again. This is very disappointing

Price-performance difference between current M1 Macbook Air and iPad Pro 12.9 is rather big imho. Even if latest iPad Pro 12.9 features almost-M1 performance, I doubt that its gonna be 8GB of RAM, so regardless its Mini LED "upgrade" I dont find it attractive that they plan on increasing its price, even if slightly.
Also, how about battery life, could it be that thanks to A14/whatever the name being 5nm and Mini LED being thicker than regular LED IPS, Apple once again downgrades battery capacity and thus keeps it at the same 10h rated screen on time? 5nm power effieciency gains vs thicker display=less room for battery, but the same battery life.
Again, M1 Macbooks have upper hand in battery life department.
I really would love to have latest and greatest iPP 12.9, but if they increase prices while only doing Mini LED "upgrade" aside from regular CPU upgrade cycle, then it might be a no go, and not just for me.
Wouldnt be surprised to see surge in either 2020 Pro sales(both sizes) or even steady increase in Air 4 sales, which I might be getting if 2021 12.9 upgrade turns out to be disappointing.

If the base model iPad gen 8 is upgraded this soon, I’ll be pissed.

I bought the iPad 3 back in the day, and six months later it was replaced by the iPad 4. I was pissed.

Most fairly educated iPad owners expect at least a one-year cycle. I wouldn’t have bought the Gen 8 if I knew the Gen 9 was just months away.

Dick move on Apple’s part.

It’s was obvious a price jump was on the cards, apple price hiked when they first brought out a Retina display, coupled with the fact that the Air had a price jump also makes it all the more obvious...

however, if the 11” gets the same price hike as the 12.9” even though it doesn’t have miniLED that will be a bad move.

I am hoping that it will also have Thundebolt 4. I have the iPad 12.9 3rd gen with 1 TB of storage which takes a long time to backup over USB C to my iMac, soThunderbolt would be very welcome.

I think people get pro because they want it or have a need for it. Regular iPads should be good for most people. We need to consider that most Apple devices give you years of use.

First of all, Apple isn’t going to tease a product that isn’t coming out until summer that already replaces a current product. They’re not dumb, and they don’t do that, with the exception of entirely new product lines and the Mac Pro, which nobody was buying anyway because it was so old.

Second, a small price increase makes sense if the 12.9” is getting an amazing new display. But a moderate one? I’d consider $50-100 small and $150-200 to be moderate. If I could switch to macOS mode with a keyboard and mouse, I’d be all over it. But I doubt that is coming with iPad OS 15.

Third, can we please get smaller bezels yet? Especially for an iPad Mini. I’ve recently gotten into drones and a reduced bezel, larger display iPad Mini would be amazing to use as the display. My son is also going to need a new iPad Mini soon as his stopped getting updates last year. Might share that with him, lol, and password protect the DJI app. But even the 12.9” could use smaller bezels, making it a little more compact and lighter. It’s still a beast of a tablet. But knowing Apple they’ll probably just increase the display to 13.3” to match the MBP Air (the smaller MBP will likely move to 14” this autumn).

WHY??? would you buy a new APPLE silicon Mac when the New iPad Pro will have the same Power as an M1 Mac Plus you get a touch screen?? For less money too!!

APPLE just cannibalized ALL sales of the Mac.
GOOD JOB!
GOOD BYE MAC!
WINDOWS and PC's have just taken over the professional SPACE.

1. Longer battery life.
2. All in one package (keyboard and mouse come with a mac).
3. Ability to connect several devices.
4. Better external display support.
5. Ability to install software not on the App Store.
6. Base models are generally cheaper (when adding in a keyboard and mouse or keyboard case).

That’s just a few but there are more reasons people would go for a mac over an iPad.

After pondering, I will wait till October to see if an iPad Mini Pro will be released if the iPad Mini is underestimate specs for my level to actually go and buy a new one!
I would recommend getting the Air now. It's a very good value for your use case and price bracket.

Mini Pro, if it comes out, would be a first gen product. This means pricing will be on the higher end, and it will have issues and compromises for being a first gen product.

The current Air is a refined and very mature product, all the issues have been rectified over the course of the iPad Pros. It's priced reasonably. The cost of R&D has been recovered by the Pros before it, so it's a good value.
