This weeks contest theme is "Signs." Pretty self-explanatory...I'm always looking for originality and I'm a sucker for good light. I'm anxious to see what all of you will come up with.

As always, the standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work. No AI generated images.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest will end Feb 11th, 2026 at approximately 12:00 PST.

Just a few more hours to get your entries in and I will be closing the contest later today. Thank you to those of you who have entered thus far!

Okay, here we are again.

Funny how being the judge seems to make the weeks fly by! Thank you to everyone who entered; I was struggling with choosing “winners” and asked my daughter to take a look and she was NO help at all…her help was: “They are ALL good.” Thanks, sis…I already KNEW THAT! 😀. So, onward and upward…

@kendallm : I had to zoom in to read the yellow sign and when I did I saw the humor in this shot! Nice catch! I like how you didn’t get closer (maybe there was a fence or some barrier, but it worked out) and caught the fire escape and the brick on the building that adds to the photo with interest and texture. I think the bare tree limbs also add to the overall aesthetic of this photo. The only thing that DIDN’T work about it, is that the sign is hard to read (or perhaps it’s just my failing eyes), which is the real focus point, but overall I really like the way you addressed it.

@oblomow : This is a cool photo. Why so many signs in a row? Is it at the entrance to an airport or something? I had Google translate the words on the first sign for me, but that didn’t help me at all. I’m anxious to hear more about this. What really draws me into this shot is the bright yellow/orange of the signs in an otherwise drab surroundings. The red stop light and taillights are also a nice addition and the way you shot it, at an angle, works so well as you can see the signs as they go down the road…a vanishing point. Very nice.

@cjsuk : I love this shot. I love the “vertical-ness” of it and the way you shot the focal point of the sign with the buildings in the background echoing the direction. Love the black and white as it wouldn’t have the same effect at all in color and the gray, cloudy sky. Even the (posts?) (antennas?) on top of the buildings tie into the horizontal theme. Really good photography.

@goldmac2006 : This is very interesting. At first I struggled with exactly what the sign was displaying and then today I “think” I got it. Was this in the beginning of 3-d printers? The bright colors are nice, but I wish you would have removed the two people in the background as I find them very distracting to the overall photo. (Perhaps you are a purist and don’t believe in using that technology and that’s fine, too).

@arkitect : Oh, as usual I love how you work with natural light. You really have a gift for it. I love the old buildings and the golden color that the light brings out in them. The angle of the shot is very interesting as well, with the clear blue sky making an excellent backdrop. Are those chimneys with what look like upside-down flower pots atop of them? As always, I hope you will fill us in on the story behind this shot, but either way, it’s lovely work.

@geta : First of all, welcome to our weekly photography contest here at MacRumors; I hope we will see you here again. I’m wondering where this was taken as it looks like a STOP or CAUTiON sign of which I have not seen in the United States before (that doesn’t mean they aren’t here!). It’s an interesting sign in itself; I like the way they displayed the man with his mouth open as if you should be able to HEAR and heed his warning. The sign (focal point) wouldn’t have the impact that it does at all without that little detail. It’s also nice the way you shot it…not head-on but at an angle showing the floor and building behind it. A very nice shot.

@Snowlover : This sign cracks me up…”No Outside Horses Beyond Here”…so are INSIDE horses allowed? 😉. The photo itself has a lot of interesting elements: the Airstream trailer, what looks like farm equipment, the building behind it; makes me wonder what kind of a place this is. Are those horse stalls in the back? Even though I live in rural America, I’m not a horse person so I have no idea. The greenery and the sunlight swath in the middle of the scene make it a really lovely photo. Love the sign.

@thirsty_monk : This is a beautiful photograph. I love all the different hues of blue. The blue lake or river, the blue mountains, the blue sky (with accents of pink), even the boat trailers are blue. I haven’t identified what the sign is referring to…It looks like a sign to point you to PARKING, but it’s not exactly pointing to any kind of parking spot. I hope you’ll enlighten me.Very nice work.

I know everybody says this at this point, but I REALLY am having a tough time choosing a podium. More so this week than any other week when I have been “the judge.” I’m going to have to take a minute or three and peruse these again…

Okay…here goes:

Third place: @thirsty_monk

Second place: @cjsuk

And

First place: (with apologies because I know how you feel about this):
@arkitect

Thanks again everyone!

Thank you very much @C0ncreteBl0nde I am always happy when someone else also connects with the image. 🙂

There is a whole slew of these "Ghost Signs" here in Bath… they range from the 18th century up to early 20th… shops and institutions all long gone.
This one is in a side street at 2 Princes Street — very much off the tourist trail — Shepherds Hall.

The Bath headquarters for the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds. They weren't actual shepherds, they were a "Friendly Society" (a bit like a combination of a private club and a mutual insurance company).

Before the modern Welfare State, working people would pay a small weekly fee into the society. In return, the "Shepherds" provided sick pay, funeral expenses, and support for widows and orphans.

Those flower pots are indeed chimney pots — most chimney stacks here have at least 6 or so — each linked to a fireplace or range somewhere in the building.

Thanks again for choosing my image — I appreciate it.

I'll sleep on it and come up with a theme first thing tomorrow morning! 🙂

Thank you for the third place, especially in a tough contest like this.

The parking sign is a bit of a mistery for me as well; in the summer there are little boats and water bicycles moored nearby, so it might be related to that.

I went to Bath once, it was ages ago, when I lived in England. When I see your images I'd love to go there again!

Thanks. All the signs are detours for the local hospital because of roadwork.

I just had a talk with my wife about the sign.
This ranch used to be a fancy Arabian breeding facility, and the area behind the sign was where the "Mare Motels" (stalls for mothers and babies) were.
So the thinking on the sign is that it was to keep outside riders, passing through the ranch heading to trails, away from that area.
