As dismayed as I am with my last Apple Care instance I suspect that the issue is that Apple doesn't know how to fix it and not that they won't. The 8800 GT is tempting, but it's not the solution, unless they wnat to knock $200 off the price.

It's the only fix right now, and probably for the next few months. Soon as that 14 days over you're screwed with refurbished junk. It's sad, I know, I didn't want/need the 8800GT I wanted the 2600XT at first, in the end Im glad I got the 8800GT.

Well i've set up the second output on mine to my VGA input on my monitor, nothing has happened yet so hopefully we are on to something here. I've only had one crash today anyways with just using one monitor.

And funny now that i've set that second input up I was having a ghosting issue in firefox when I selected things from the pull down menus like bookmarks at the top. I'm not having that issue now.

Hey Jimi

So are you running two monitors or do you have both outputs hooked up to the same monitor?

If the latter, would you mind explaining in slow detail (for the slow among us, like me) how to do that?

Thanks.

Yea I have both outputs hooked up to my Dell 2407WP monitor. What I did was plug the regular DVI output to DVI monitor input as usual. Then took the DVI-VGA converter that came with the MP and plugged it in to the second output and connected that to the VGA input of the montior. Then I went to display settings in system preferences and turned on mirroring and then that's basically it. On the monitor I just have it set to the DVI input since there is no need for the VGA input.

So far no problems with this new card with this setup, it's been in for 6 hours now and i've been doing heavy rendering in Shake.

Hi Mr.PS, could you elaborate on this 14 days thing?

You can't return anything after 14 days is all he is saying. After 14 days your only options are to usually have the computer repaired. Not quite sure if Apple uses refurbished parts on their repairs though.

Your official return period is 14 days. After that you have to apply pressure to get a replacement, or go in for repair. The reason I mentioned the 14 day policy is that if you want to re-order with an 8800GT you only have 14 days to do so. After those 14 days Apple will not issue you a refund.

That's all. I returned my first Mac Pro a few days ago I got it and upgraded to an 8 core with the 8800GT - no not because I had buyers remorse, but because the Ati video issues were driving me nuts.

May I know where on their website or anywhere I can find this fine print? I'm not sure whether Singapore's apple policy will be the same as apple ins US.

Do I have to make any connections directly to the card, or am I just adding a connector to the port on the outside of the MP and then to the monitor?

Thanks, Jimi.

Yes the second DVI port next to the one you already have plugged in.

I've had the new card in and dual "fix" for 12 hours now with heavy renders in After Effects, Shake, and Premiere. No freezes at all.

I know this whole thing is speculation at this point, but do you think just attaching the DVI adaptor to the second port without attaching it to the monitor (don't have the appropriate cable handy) would fake the MP out in the same way?

Thanks again, jimi.

Well, the "dummy" method (hooking up a dvi adaptor to the second monitor port w/o connecting it to the monitor) didn't work...

Could people please check in and let us know if you're still getting crashes? Hearing from people who have:

*replaced their card with another 2600
*replaced card w/8800
*replaced entire computer
*using two monitors
*using both monitor outs connected to the same monitor

I need to decide whether to get a replacement card from apple or get a replacement computer.

Thanks!

No you still need to connect it to the monitor. Do you not have a monitor with a VGA and DVI input?

I do, I just don't have another cable.

Trip to the computer store today...

I'm still weighing

*new 2600
vs.
*new 8800
vs.
new computer

and would love to hear a progress report from anyone who's made any of these changes....

Yea that would fix it by actually plugging it in to the VGA input. Try that before making a decision on anything. Do you really want to go through the hassle of sending it back, getting a refund then ordering a new computer with the 8800? That would be your only option if you want to get the 8800 without having to pay for the full price on the upgrade separately in the store. They wouldn't let me just pay the difference to send back the 2600XT card and send me a 8800 card.

I'll try it.

They wouldn't let you have an 8800 for $200 and your old card? That's a drag--but they would've exchanged your 2600 for another one?

This computer is otherwise pretty well-behaved so returning it is unappealing. Worst case scenario--return it and get one with worse problems and be totally stuck with that one!

Exchanging the 2600 card seems pretty safe.

But I'll try the cable first!

Nope, they were like if you want the 8800 you need to do a complete return of the computer and then order a new one with it. And I didn't want to do a DOA return and ship me a whole new one because I had already installed everything I needed, converted my iTunes library from PC to Mac, imported email and documents. It just all would have been a big hassle.

48 + hours now with the dual fix setup and not one freeze.

And you've been running her hard, right?

Got it hooked up, hoping for the best.

Selected mirroring in displays, sys prefs reset my resolution so I put it back at 1600x1200 and everything looks normal again.

BTW, that is the correct resolution for a 24" monitor, right? It's a dell 2001fcp.

But now I'm wondering how much easier things would be (on the eyes mostly) with a 30-incher. Could I have my windows (logic 8 and FCE mostly) larger, but with the same sharpness, or would they be the same size only I'd have more room to move them around?

Thanks again, and I hope this "fix" works out for everyone!

24" Monitors are 1920x1200, 20" are usually 1600x1200 so you are good to go.
