try to note down after which time after boot up it happens or something like that ... if it's close that might point to a heat issue in the card

For me it never freeze at the same time : sometime it's 30s, sometime 24h.

Same for activity, sometime it's freeze with no activity, sometime it works for 10h with xbench+Halo+stress(!) without any problem...

i had the exact same problem when i purchased my macbook, i taped when the screen was acting up and i went to the apple store showed the video to the manager and they replaced my macbook on the spot. You should take your MP to an apple store and take the pictures with you

The store is 2 hours drive from me so isn't the option for me.

Well, ATI's graphic card for old Mac Pro's (X1900) had the same bug. Far from enough cooling resulting in crashing graphics. It never got fixed really, ppl just got new cards that usually worked for 1week - 6 months.

But if your problems can occur on a cool, just booted up machine, it is probably something else then heating.

It is definately a video card issue, though.

Spoken to applecare and all they want to do is bring the thing for service repair 1-2 weeks OR have me go back to the store (2 hours drive) to diagnose the issue which will be hard.

They won't just send me out a new graphics card which I thought would be the sensible option.

What should I do now? The machine was only brought on the 14th of this month :(

Thanks

of course they wouldn't just send you a new card without a diagnostic.
would a doctor prescribe medicine over the phone (albeit with photos of the symptoms) for a patient without ever having seen the patient? i'm getting one of these too so my fingers are crossed i don't get the same problem. but i did have the same issue once with an iBook and they ended up replacing the entire logic board because the video card was soldiered right on it. definitely a video card problem i have to say.

.

Why not? Seems to me to be the quicket and easiest solution??

Anyway looks like im going to have to go back to the apple store, again, and get them to have a look at it and probably replace it. :(

Maybe wait for 10.5.2 upgrade (Friday?), my dream is that it will be soft/drivers corrected...

if its a default config MP (like the ones they sell at the stores) then i once again advice you to go to the store and exchange it, with more reason now since you haven't owned the computer longer than a month

good luck i was sure pissed when that happened to my macbook and they couldnt figure it out

PS: i also had to make a long trip to get to the apple store i live in Queens,NY and i had to take the subway which takes about 1:30 to 2 hours with transfers + walking but i was glad i did'nt have to wait 1-2 weeks

Just back from the store... with an other brand new MP 2008. This time it was not assembled in Ireland but in China.

You know what? Same problem! :-(

So, seems to be really difficult to find one MP 2008 who just can work for more than some hours...

You have the same issue again with a brand new pne? that i described?

Yes. :(

Jules

Damn i suppose to be replacing mine tonight, doesn't give me much hope.

I need to replace it cause it's the last few days and if it is a hardware issue i don't want to have to send it away.

Please report. I'm having some problems as well. I just finished reinstalling Leopard to see if it was a software thing. I have a feeling it's the video card though. :(

God damn it :( Sorry man.

Maybe it is a software issue I don't know, but at least now I have the new system and it does happen again ill know that it can't be the hardware, or at the most it's going to be bad graphics card.

Ill let you know.

I'm doing the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) from the install DVD (posting from my wife's iMac) to see if it reports anything.

listen, go get it returned.. I HAD THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE... over and over again.. sometimes it would happen in 2 minutes.. sometimes in 24hrs...

apple replaced my mac pro with a brand new computer, and im VERY happy to report that after 1 week, its working perfect, no issues

its either MB issues, Video card issue, etc... just return it... im telling you my advice from same exact issue exactly

Well, AHT says it passed. I'm putting it through it's paces right now. I think I'll wait 'til tomorrow and see if 10.5.2 shows up in software update and possibly updates drivers and/or firmware to fix it. If not, then back she goes. I've been without a machine for 2 weeks before this one showed up on tuesday and I can't be without again for an extended period of time, I'm way behind on some projects.

Mac Pro Weird Screen

I had the same thing happen to me last night. I thought the unit over heated because it was in a cabinet. I had to reboot also. I will post again if this occurs again.

Phil

I am starting to think it's a bad batch of something - I left mine overnight and it's fine (NOT using stock video card, although I never used Safari, so maybe that's true too :) ), but most likely bad video card batch going around. Guess we can wait and see if it's bad video card driver or good old video card recall...

Well an hour of use and it's not had a bleep :)

It's such a shame cause if that wasn't an issue it's such a beautiful machine and it's the best system I have owned.

Anyway fingers crossed and lets see how things pan out.

Cheers

Well, an hour since I reinstalled Leopard and about a half hour since AHT and so far so good. :) UPS just showed up at the door with my 4 gigs of RAM from OWC. I think I'll go ahead and install it and while I have it open maybe reseat the video card and take a look around in there while I'm at it.

I need more RAM, :( Non here in the UK yet, im waiting to see how it compares to OWC in USA, whenever Crucial decide they are ready.
