i just wondered if the apple cinema display has a built in fuse of any sort as it has a adc with a usb dvi the screen was working fine and then it went suddenly off no power light and when i plug it into my p,mac g4 400 the g4 will go to sleep and when i press the power button on the g4 it starts but the screen is still black and no power light it was working fine and i have tried the v card and it works with my dell so the card is fine the display was working fine but it just went off one adc cable with dvi does it have a fuse? i wont it to i love my screen please some advice rover121:(

Is that to do with the issues mentioned in this thread.?

I just had another crash while just safari open and iTunes and was playing music.

When the crash happened and everything froze the itunes music continued to play no problem?? Which lead me even more to think it is the graphics card crashing.

Any views?

Try installing Firefox like i did... no crash so far :) Seems Safari is the bad boy for me atleast. (So far...)

Exact same issue just occurred on my new 2008. I picked this one up today as a replacement for one that had a faulty hot power supply, and after several hours without trouble, boom. The dotted white vertical lines appeared. Only Safari and Dashboard were open. I could still move the mouse cursor around and when I clicked on stuff the disturbances changed and got progressively worse. Had to hold the power button to reboot.
Maybe next time Apple bring out a mac pro, they should not be so hastey to release it. Those hundreds of days of development were clearly not long enough for them to squeeze in a few days of testing.

Has anyone had it happen when Safari was not open? Its clear that Safari has other problems, such as the "You are not connected to the internet" nonsense, so I don't have much faith in it.

Yeh its the same always for me, you can move the mouse around when it's crashed very bizzare.;

To be honest I probably always have Safari open when it crashes as I never really close it. Maybe this whole issue IS to do with a software bug after all?

I will be hearing back from the apple guy Monday, I spoke to him again today and he will be speaking to the engineers to see what to do, he said they might want to look at my system i.e have it in which means I will go without a computer which really isn't expceptable and I can't afford to spend all this time diagnosing issues myself, I have deadlines and this is getting stupid :(

4God, do you use sleep? I don't usually but I slept it for a few minutes just to ascertain whether I had the reboot on wake issue. It woke without difficulty but half an hour later I got my first screen freeze. Maybe something nasty was still lingering from the sleep?

No, no sleep - ever. I always turn off my energy saving features when I receive a new machine.

EDIT: The last two times it crashed, the monitor went off and the little blue light flashed 3 short times and kept going through
that sequence until I hard restarted. So, I went here to see if I could find some answers.

I find it interesting because it has the symptoms in the first box. That tells me that it's a card/driver issue for sure.

Two more screen freezes for me today while browsing. I have over a week left before my 14 day exchange period is up so I will give Apple a bit longer to confess there is a problem and hopefully provide a fix.

I don't think returning should be a worry, it's either a software issue OR a GC problem either or you won't need to return your system I think.

Ill hear more tomorrow so ill keep everyone posted. :)

Does it freeze when you just use Safari, or does it freeze when you click on anything in the dock?

EDIT - Just read above statement. Looks like you are having the same issues that I had with mine. Exchange it for a new one. Mine is now working fantastically. Those freezes were pissing me off.
