I've never needed more than 16GB

Not everyone needs more than 16GB. With and additional 5GB available in the cloud, neither my husband or I have ever had more than 16GB on both our phones and iPads. To each his own.

I work as an Apple Rep at a third-party authorized retailer. 16GB is the most popular size, by far.

you call it semantics, i call it precise language. once again throwing around terms like price gouging and "rip-off" is inappropriate to this conversation. people have different needs and therefore value things differently.

for me $100 for an extra 16g of storage is too much. that doesn't make it a rip off, or price gouging or any of the other hyperbolic terms people are throwing around. If you don't want it, don't buy it. The real pressure on Apple will come from the competitors which is part of the reason why their price premium is unrivaled - they are almost always ahead of the market curve.

This has obvious short term pros and cons for we the consumers but in the end competition drives prices down and quality up such that we all win.
Well they certainly aren't ahead of the market curve when it comes to pricing on storage. Nobody touches apples premium on storage, which I thought was my and others' point.

I'm fine with paying more for an iPad, because it's better. The extra storage pricing is rather silly to anyone that follows tech though.

In other words I'm happy to pay the apple tax once, not for each and every storage bump though..

i personally think 16gb is too small, but 32gb isn't much better. most of my movies are mkv downloaded 1080p or 720p. that means i'm looking at 4-8gb per video file. if i buy a 32gb, i can put 4-5 more videos on there sure, but it's not optimal. i think you're better off buying one of those wireless drives tbqh

Yes please buy a wireless drive. I highly recommend the hootoo tripmate. Makes any USB drive wireless and it's quite portable with other useful features. At half the cost of one of apples storage bumps.

And that's why Apple won't be dropping the 16gb anytime soon. They're the entry level one, which is just fine for a lot of users. Some people may need more, but I don't care for movies or TV shows on my iPad. That's what a TV is for, right?

I have 1.5gb of photos, 3.5gb Apps i need, 8 x Tv shows plus books, other, and still have 6.5gb left. I spend 2-3 hours a week waiting for kids at music lessons and catch up on shows.
I am a deleter if i don't use it or have watched it out it goes:) 16 suits me.

Same here. It's great if you know how to manage the storage. I delete as I go too

So, to sum up this thread, it looks like 16gb for many of us was not a mistake at all. Rather a smart choice.

But I see the point of those on the road and traveling, not having a network connection, and needing everything on the device.

My point is that because it's better, they can get away with charging more. No sale happens unless both parties would rather have what the other person wants than what they have to trade... Apple will presumably start to lose grounds in this area to competitors in which case those prices will begin to drop.

As for your final point, I agree entirely there.

And I'm saying that the 16gig sells because everything else is too much of a rip off. Fwiw I have a 16gig.

Ok then, back to the original debate. How does that make it Apple's fault?
Apple is the premium of tech companies, how is it their fault that you don't want to spend more money to upgrade?

You want cheaper prices, either wait for technology to become the standard or switch to a different company that is more affordable.

You're complaining that a premium company isn't cheaper. "Premium" and "Cheaper" do not go together in the same sentence.

No matter what way you want to spin it, it's not Apple's "fault" that you didn't want to spend more money on their premium device.

Not for the storage, but for the price.

My problem is that there is nothing 'premium' about the storage upgrades at all. All of the innovation is contained in the price of the base model. A 128gb device is not faster in any way (or better IMO, just learn to manage your storage and earn $300). The reason I'm only using 128GB as a comparison is because the other models have even more depressing of a GB per dollar ratio.

Apple sets their price, I don't really understand the 'fault' game, but it's all Apple. We aren't bidding on their products here. I wouldn't know who else to blame. Obviously 128gb SSD drives don't cost anywhere near $300, so we can't blame the manufacturer of the drives. Of course there is a market for it, but that doesn't mean it's not a rip off.

I would argue that the relatively greater depreciation of the larger GB models in the secondary market makes the true value of the storage evident.

and thats why apple will keep making the 16gb version. Those same people dont want to spend an extra $100 for a phone.
lol. The whole point is that it's not because people love the 16Gigs, it's that apple can fleece people $100+ for 32+gigs. Apple having a 32gig base would be forgoing big $$$. So expect the 16Gig version to stay.

Apple - where people are seen as only cash cows. Don't believe us? Look at the 1Gig of RAM in the Air - We at Apple laugh at every report of problems that are rolling in, due to OOM errors. But we make an extra $3 on every air because of this. $$$$$$$$$$$

Just chickened out and cancelled my rMini 64GB order, changing it to 128GB.

Reasoning :
My iphone is at 56 of 64GB with a few apps but mainly music and podcasts.
My ( to be replaced ) ipad2 is at 30 of 32GB with applications, photos, magazines and a few podcast but no music or video.

If the mini is to be last more than a year, and to be useful while traveling; as magazine viewer ( some push out > 300MB per issue ) and as an editor for digital camera files (which now pump out >24Mpixel resolution) every GB is going to be needed.

The extra $4 a month will soon be forgotten.

I still don't think I will have space for more than a few hours of TV or movies at a time, so one of the WiFi drives will be the ideal supplement for such large and numerous, but infrequently accessed files.

Same here. Love not having to worry about storage.

I have no music or videos on my 128GB iPad. Those are easily streamed and for Blu-ray MKV rips (that I made myself), I just use one of my Android tablets with micro SD slot.

However, I've got quite a pretty large collection of comics on my iPad. Waiting time for download on those is pretty long (can't just stream them) and the large size makes them impractical to download again and again over a metered internet connection.
I rip Blu-rays and compress them down to smaller MKV's (usually 2-4GB's depending on audio and aspect ratio). No reason I need a 4GB Blu-ray rip but then again I don't want to have two copies so I plan on getting a Galaxy Note 8...I had a droid first but for a phone the iPhone was for me BUT I do love Android and think its a great platform for tablets and for a tinkerer like me its perfect! With a 64GB Micro SDXC card I get a total of 80GB's and soon 128GB SDXC cards will be coming out soon I can have 144GB's (whether the Galaxy Note 8 or other devices supports it is up in the air but SDXC supports up to 2TB's so if the device supports SDXC I think its a safe guess). Not bad at all! Just curious what Android Tablet/player App do you use that supports MKV's?

Yeah because people can only sell one of their kidneys and part of their liver to get their hands on an iPad. You know how many times Ive seen kids selling off stuff just so they can get the latest piece of Apple gear? Allot. Also your assuming the consumer knows what 16GB's and how much that holds. My dad thought 16GB's for his iPhone would be enough but he bought a 160GB iPod Classic for that...although he does like the cloud's ability to download songs on his iPhone when needed.

The nice thing about tablets with microSD card slots is you're not limited to carrying just one microSD card with you. I carry a microSD card case the size of a credit card which holds up to 8 microSD cards in my wallet. With 64GB cards (max density for micro at the moment), that's up to 512GB of additional storage that doesn't require you to be connected to the internet. microSD cards are also very compact and don't need charging unlike wi-fi drives such as the Kingston WiDrive and Seagate GoFlex Satellite.

As for video players, I use MX Player. So far, the's the only one I've seen that supports karaoke-style subs commonly used in anime.

I actually have that MicroSD credit card case on order haha, I use SD cards allot for my GoPro's, and my DSLR so changing out SD cards isn't weird to me. I'll probably use 2-3 64GB's microSDXC cards until 128's come out (which again is soon) and even then ill probably still use multiple cards. I have always kept a MicroSD card in a full size adapter in my wallet for emergency use...I ran out of the house without an SD card in my camera once and my wallet backup saved my rear!

I literally am Apple mad, with a Macbook Air, iMac, iPhone 5s. But I have no use whatsoever for my iPad 32GB apart from browsing the internet. I did use it for the internet every night but other than that I hate playing games on it, don't watch movies on it and don't need to store music or photos on it (that's for my iPhone). So I'm not a non-techy but I have no use for a 32gb+ iPad.

I've been trying a D-link shareport device that allows one to connect a USB key for added storage.

So far it's pretty good streaming movies to my 16gb iPhone 4S.

I'm thinking 16gb iPad Air may suffice if my primary use case is streaming movies, surfing, iWork and just a handful of apps and games.

Yes I believe it was just shy of 12.5 , more than 12.

OT: flash drive / hdd + hootoo tripmate + nplayer app = no storage problems on my 16gig

hi buddy i am wondering how to search tripmate using nplayer? The tripmate does not show up in the UPnP/DLNA network.
