16 GB is perfect for me. Have 37 apps that only take up 1.5 GB. Still have 10 GB free. For my music I use the Google music player app and also itunes match. Watching movies at home is easy, just have sharing turned on with my imac, and can stream movies without storing them on ipad. I don't play any games so I doubt I would ever need anything more than 16 GB.

How many people do you really think go and look at the size of apps on the app store before they buy an iPad?

Most people would trust Apple to come up with appropriate storage sizes.

This is such a ridiculous argument it's barely worth discussion.

There is nothing to "trust" Apple when it comes to providing the "appropriate" storage size as that is specific to a particular user and their needs. Apple isn't in the business of predicting what every person should buy for their needs - they offer 4 sizes that caters to the whole range, whether you want to pay for the higher amounts is totally up to you. It's a non-simplistic decision based on metrics involving cost, storage needs and whether or not you want cellular capabilities.

Now a separate yet more cogent argument would be the elimination of the 16GB model and making the base start at 32GB. Whether that is feasible given their cost structure and desired margins is of course something only Apple can answer. They have the sales numbers for everything and plenty of folks must be buying 16GB for them to justify structuring it that way. Whether 16GB is enough for a particular person's needs is completely subjective no matter what a bunch of (most likely) power users on a forum think. At the end of the day Apple is a business whose primary goal is to maximize it's profits and value to its shareholders.

Again -- every individual has the option to buy more storage (or not).

16 GB should be enough for most unless you plan on making your iPad a storage device then by all means you'll need more. Apps in the app store should not be 1gb each . if and when that happens I wont be downloading them.

I ended up getting the 16 GB version because I don't plan on putting big files on it. Maybe on trips I may take a couple of movies or shows. But to each their own.

32GB is the sweet spot.

16GB is too little if you want to store movies, books, apps, and games. If you only want a movie and maybe apps like Facebook, Flipboard, and Angry Birds it'll be fine.

64GB/128GB is too much for most people. Unless you store a huge amount of content or are willing to pay $700/$800.

16gb is perfect for me. I have all the apps I need with settings showing only 3.1gb used. All my stuff streams from the cloud or my Mac. I don't understand the need to make the iPad a rolling storage device.

Edit: except when no cloud/wifi access.

No problem at all with 16gb here. With Home Sharing across wifi, everything streams from my Mac fast and smoothly. Even apps are in the cloud can be downloaded quickly.

If it's storage you want, get an iPod or subscription to Dropbox. Storage is not what makes this tablet uniquely advanced, and Apple makes a killing in fueling fears of storage inadequacy. It's really about the advanced design, architecture, and functionality.

And finally, why pour tons of money into storage at insane costs when you know it'll be outdated in 2 years, and you'll be yearning for the next generation?

Because some of us simply don't have access to wifi all the time. Case in point, I travel a lot. 13 hour plane rides can be very boring. My husband works overseas and his wifi is hit or miss at the best of times. He does well just to be able to download an app update. He loads up with movies, TV and podcasts to last the 3 months he's gone.

I agree that Apple's pricing for extra storage is outrageous but when someone has the need for storage you have to weigh the need vs cost. And don't start with the wireless HD etc. When you travel a lot streamlining you 'stuff' is a huge consideration.

It's all about personal needs/wants, financial means, and tolerance for inconvenience.

What you say makes perfect sense. When traveling and wanting to enjoy your music, movies, games, etc., without cloud or wifi access, additional storage is needed and worth it. No argument from me.

I have a stay at home 16 gb iPad 4 and a new 32 gb rmini that goes everywhere with me. For consumption of content I think a 16 gb is sufficient. But for having lots of stuff at the ready on the go, I think 32 gb is necessary.

Having said all that until my husband took this contract he barely used a gig of his storage. A 16 g would have worked just fine for him if he were still home.

As I said, it all depends on the person. I can see why Apple still sells the 16. It will probably work just fine for a lot of folks.

There are workarounds available like the hootoo tripmate too. Makes any flash / USB hdd wirelessly accessible from iPad. Portable, pretty slick IMO. Depends what you need the storage for, there are limitations on what it can be used for. For media you are good to go. Apps/ Games, you need internal storage.

Just to add. Apps/games are in the cloud and can be downloaded as needed. If willing to do that, no additional internal storage needed for that (assuming wifi connection).

I understand what you're saying. I just don't see why the starting storage size is the same for retina devices as it is for non-retina, when the apps are up to four times as large.

The layman may just think they can upgrade from an iPad 2 to an iPad 3/4/Air and move all of their content across, when that isn't the case at all.

Shouldn't the focus be on complaining to Apple about their walled garden approach and FORCE them to add a MicroSD expansion slot?

16gb is virtually unusable --- I bought a 16gb to use as basis of comparison with my Mini Retina LTE, and after loading my apps., I didn't have enough storage for a VERY small music collection and single movie.

I knew that 16gb would've been difficult, just didn't know it was impossible for ---going out on a limb ---most people's use.

A better comparison would be that you used to have a Hyundai that had 'adequate' mileage before you had to fill up again. You then bought the 'S' model which uses up four times as much fuel, but has the same size tank. Fit for purpose? Probably not.

Well the OP seemed to have a more simple thought process so I tried to keep it simple in response, hehe. Logic says twice the pixel density, twice the space to create the same image. I guess they didn't realize a DVD rip is 750mb and a blu ray rip is 4.5gb. LOL

I have a fair number of apps and my 16gb has plenty of space left. But my music/movie collection streams to my iPad rather than residing there. So for me the 16gb is very usable, and anything larger would have been a waste of money.

Yes, it does make it Apple's fault when they are offering a storage size that's barely fit for purpose.

Most people won't know how much storage they're going to use up until they've actually bought one.

That STILL does not make it Apples fault.
I see that even you have a 16GB iPad, along with a ton of others. Vote with your wallets, don't buy something if you don't want it.

So you want us to get gouged on storage pricing to show apple we want the base model higher than 16gb? If everyone did that Apple would never change it, they'd just love the extra profits and keep that gravy train going.

It would be nice if the minimum GB was now 32 for the 16GB price. However, Apple is about profit plain and simple and they are just not going to do it. I also think as long as the 16GB continues to sell well you likely will not see them do it.

I have a 16GB iPhone but I use it as a phone and do not store music or movies. I have other larger capacity iDevices for that.

Bottom line is if you are going to stick with Apple and you need more capacity, you gotta pay if you wanna play.

With today's apps I think 16GB is too small for a phone or iPad. I have a 128 Air since it's my main device but if I were to buy an Air it would be a toss up between 32 and 64. My iPhone is just fine with 32.

It really depends on what kind of apps. Some apps aren't that big while others are (mainly games).

I'm leaning towards the 16GB Retina Mini based on the past usage of my original iPad. I'll really only be using it for web browsing, Netflix, and YouTube. It would be nice to have a larger capacity to put movies on it if I'm ever on a long trip (in the car) without internet access. Tough choices...

Depending on how many apps you plan on getting in addition to the movies for long trips, you could be ok or you may be better off getting 32. If you don't get any games at all and don't really do anything except browse the web and watch netflix, you'll be fine with 16

This thread changed my mind.

I was set on a 16 gig rMini.

Ended up ordering a 32 gig rMini.

Thank you OP.

That is all.

Glad I helped

I ran out of gas halfway across the country. It's Hyundai's fault for not making a bigger gas tank!!!

Or you need to spend more money on gas

I feel very dumb saying this because I was ignorant to the situation but I thought this exact thing

What does DVD size have to do with anything?

Can't agree that 16gb is a mistake, at least not for many users. Many don't use their iPad as an entertainment storage warehouse, but rather stream their content from elsewhere across a network.

For them, buying excess storage they don't need based on marketing fears at outrageous upgrade prices is the mistake. I don't think this thread addressed both sides of the issue and people's needs.

Lol no one is forcing you to buy an iPad at all. Go and buy another competing companies tablet that offers a higher storage capacity for the price range.

Lots of people are very happy with a 16GB iPad still. Just because it doesn't match you doesn't mean other people aren't happy with it.

Btw, I do agree that Apple should increase their storage minimums, but this was about it being apples fault for not.
