Does she wear diamonds?

I managed to scratch my 1st gen iPad about two weeks after launch with my engagement ring (too loose and the diamond tended to slip around the wrong side). I could only see it when the iPad screen was OFF but it was still sad.

I know it doesn't help now, but general reminder for everyone: diamonds and your iDevices do not like each other.

Hmm, good thought. She does have a ring with many diamonds on it, but it's on the same hand as the watch.

She's had her silver Sport model since Friday. Today she noticed a small and very straight scratch from the top left corner towards the middle of the screen.

She's not even sure how it happened. It's very, very thin and quite hard to see unless you look at it at just the right angle but it's definitely there. Makes me wonder what our watches will look like in a couple years!

Hopefully they bring the sapphire to all models in the future, or if the 2nd or 3rd gen look good enough we'll step it up to the stainless steel next time.

Anyone else have any scratches yet?
No worries. She just has to live with it until next year when the AW 2 comes out. ;-)

Seriously though sorry to hear that

I'll definetly be getting a glass screen protector for the Watch and a case. The case will undoubtedly make the Watch look like a G Shock but I don't care. It's all about the resale value and keeping the item pristine.

Fair point. Out of interest do you know what other sport watches use?

Can't speak for all of them, but the Garmin Forerunner 620 is about the same price as the Apple Watch Sport, and it has a plastic/polymer non-capacitive (non-touch) screen.

Personally, I bought the 42mm sport specifically because it did NOT have a sapphire screen. I view this as a disposable sport watch, similar to the way I've viewed my fitbits. It's a first-gen Apple product and certain to be eclipsed fully within 2 years by a better product.

Oh ya that will be a big help.

iPhone 5s came out it was $600 and now it is $149 brand new.

People with used 5s .. trying to sell it at $400 ... and there are some fish out there that snatch at it ... old battery, no apple care, no USB cable, etc and god only knows where it has been. Especially those icky ear buds.

There are people with poor social habits that like things such as that.

I try to keep my distance for health reasons.

$149 + 2 year contract =/= $149

I'll be quite happy if you stay far away from me.

well sure I did the math on the two year contact verses a new one that has no contract ... have to pay for Verizon or what ever cellular phone service any way ... you are going to spend money.

Apple CEO of Economics crunched the numbers very well and I am impressed with the work they did.

The cheapest way to go is Verizon (it is unlocked apparently) and after the two year contract for service is up I can switch to Net 10 or something else that is a lot more cheaper ... as my MEID number qualifies for that alternative service ...

oh careful buyer me.

An unlocked 5s is pretty near the same price as a contract 6 ...

a used 5s @ $400 ATT locked plus two years service is $250 more expensive then new from the Apple Store.

(add up the two year cost for each example and the apples are compared to apples then)

An iPhone 6 is only $400 more then an iPhone 5s for the same 2 year contract.

I could have gotten the 6 ... but tis a new model and a bit tweaky right now, when the 6s comes out .. that will be the one to get.

The 5s has almost everything the 6 has ... especially the same iOS.

However .. I did not want to spend the extra $400 and taxes ... etc.

So I got new ... for $149 out the door ...

a lot better and way cheaper then USED ...

:):):)

I've owned nice watches for over 30 years. The one watch component that's very hard to protect is the face. I learned long ago to bite the bullet and purchase sapphire watch crystals. No different with the Apple watch. Forget the marketing hype about "ion implanted" glass or whatever. Nothing beats true sapphire, and it's worth the extra $$$ if you plan on wearing the watch on a regular basis.

I've got a sapphire surface on a Suunto Ambit - and I'm continually attempting to destroy this watch while sailing and just being clumsy. I've banged it off of every surface and ripped the band in half in the past - yet the crystal is still pristine...

Oh, "random guy on the internet" posts a test video. Nice try, but this one has been fairly well debunked. Tragic how someone spends $350 just so his YouTube video can go a bit viral.

If this were even the slightest, marginal issue we'd have seen countless posts and examples, and the press would have been all over it.

Reality is more like this:

Don't crush the watch with an iron skillet. Got it.

.

How is that tragic? At 1M+ views, he's already made the money back & a few thousand more :p

I originally had the SS version and I was terrified to death of scratching the watch casing. I sold it for a very nice profit and I just ordered another watch but in the SG sport flavor. I will put a screen protector on the face which should make my mind much more at ease. after all, breaking a $400 is much better than breaking a $700 watch.

but even if I do break the new one, it'll be okay because it ended up being free thanks to the profit I made from the first watch. lol

It's bound to happen... it's like owning a car. Do you really think it wouldn't get scratched? Think about jacket zippers, key chains, door frames, the faucet - all things that can come into contact with the display and will scratch the glass.

You should have paid a little bit more for the Watch if you wanted it to be less prone to scratching.

Also, if you wore your phone on your wrist it would also have tons of scratches on it.

I still think it's funny of Apple to have done it this way.

The Sports watch, Sports being where you are doing rough and tumble things.
they make with the easiest to scratch screen.

The normal watch you wear in the office and going out in, has the hardest screen.

Makes you wonder............

Perhaps, as time goes on and prices and processes get cheaper and quicker, they may probably just put sapphire on all the models.

You will have to provide a link that shows the sport model shattered easier. Every test I've seen shows just the opposite. The Sapphire one is the one that shatters.

You've "never seen you $350 plus watch that didn't have sapphire"? Clearly, you haven't been looking.

Here are two videos to prove the point.

Drop test with Sapphire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkQ-1WgWN1s

Sapphire didn't experience any scratches/cracks on the display, just slight marks on the side.

Scratch test with Sapphire vs Sport (tested by Consumer Reports): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1Prazcy00A

Sapphire had no scratches and Consumer Reports used the toughest level of scratching available to them (drill bit), whereas the Sport model easily scratched.
