I've been going caseless on my 14 Pro and everything was going fine with the exception of a tiny micro-scratch on the screen (before I decided to at least use a screen protector). All I had was a screen protector and my Apple Wallet on the phone.

Last night my phone fell off the top of my toilet somehow and now have 2 scuff marks around the bezel and also a scuff mark on the camera bump, but thankfully not on the lens. I do have AppleCare +, but I know they don't cover scratches or scuffs.

Anyone know if there are any places out there I can have them fix the scuff marks?

That's too bad.

I've never left my iPhone sitting on top of the toilet at night. You're fortunate it didn't fall in.

I have a business card holder my iPhone (and all previous phones) sits in at night. That's on a desk, next to the bed. Assuming the highly improbable happens and my iPhone somehow manages to slip off the holder, walk itself about a foot over to the edge and then drop, it's going to hit a carpeted floor.

I don't use cases either. When you stop using cases you have to start being aware of where you place your phone - and don't leave it places where there is high potential for it to fall or get damaged.

AppleCare+ won’t cover scratches, scuffs and dents because they are cosmetic only and do not affect performance.

Unless you are not bothered by cosmetic defects, always use a case. It is in the balance of probabilities that you will drop your phone several times each year causing cosmetic or functional damage to your phone.

At least if you continue going naked with it, you will stop caring about cosmetic damage and will be desensitised to scratches as your device is already no longer perfect.

A case can also cover up the damage also but it’s like admitting defeat at this point, lol.

I agree with eyoungren. I use cases, but when I first get a new phone I use it caseless for a bit while trying it out and figuring out/getting the case I want and I'm extra particular about placement and the like during that period than I am afterwards. I'm always somewhat careful but with a caseless device you have to take it further. Though to be fair I suppose it can be a bit harder to keep that guard up over a longer period.

If it's fixable there's a good chance it would be expensive and not really worth it.

It eventually becomes second nature. I think it's harder for people who have used cases because it's not something they have to consider much. Putting a case on your phone gives you a sense in the back of your head that your phone is protected. While most case users are not careless, this sense of security allows case users to get away with some things that most non-case users wouldn't do.

Spatial awareness (where your phone is in space relative to you) and where you set your phone down or keep it is a learned habit.

Completely agree with this. I do not use a case in general and subconsciously I always ensure the phone is placed on a soft surface and ensure there is no way it can wiggle around.

just be glad that the phone didn't land in unflushed(yes, after a #2) toilet water at the airport lounge while trying to stand up. :( which was happened to my iPhone 7 a few years ago. At least I learned a good lesson and NEVER use my daily driver phone in the bathroom again. I only take my spare phone, iPhone SE with 4-inch screen.

(copy and paste from the post I made at a competing iPhone forum before I found MacRumors): I got the lounge attendant to get me some disposable gloves to fish out the phone. I washed it as best as I could with water and some disinfectant. It was placed in a small cardboard box that I had. I had Verizon's protection plan at the time. The phone actually still worked, but I told the incident to the agent and she still arranged to have a replacement sent to me. I was told not to return the phone because it was considered biohazard. I tossed the phone at the recycling bin at my local county's recycling center.

The fully story is that our bathroom is being re-finished so we don't have lights at the moment. I used my phone's flashlight and placed it on top of the toilet while I went to the bathroom, and I guess the ceramic finish was slippery and the phone slide off onto the tiled floor. :(

That’s gutting and I feel your pain! I dont use a case and I’ve been lucky to avoid drops for about 3 years but it does big up loads of scratches! I think for my next phone I will get the otter box defender case to protect from the light scratches as they bug me on the screen!

My major case gripe is they all seem to feel sticky after awhile

Haha, looks like you’re planning to go from one extreme to another.

I used an Otterbox Defender on my 12 Mini for the first year along with one of their screen protectors and my phone was kept in a pristine condition for the duration. I have now used an Apple silicone case for 6 months and it is durable enough to prevent any scratches and has kept the phone looking new. I prefer to go down the stylish route as the Otterbox Defenders, as amazing as they are, are really bulky and take away from the aesthetics of the phone. I’d probably use them if I worked in construction or partook in extreme sports.

Not everyone are in the position where they can control their environment without fail. If you are near children or pets it is impractical to guarantee the safety of devices at all times.

The  Watch as shown there is a market for rugged things with extra battery. Design it well and sell it as iPhone Ultra.

While Applecare+ won't cover them, i'm sure you can pay $29 or $99 for a new phone though.

Suck it up and stay the course. Refuse to use a case or screen protector. You can do it, brother.

I've had a smartphone since 2009 and an iPhone since 2011. I have two kids, one born in 2003 and one born in 2008. So, in 2009 that would have made them 6 and 1.

My daughter is the youngest and she and I would battle over my phone. She would try to get it and I would pick her up, walk her over to the other side of the room and put her down. At that point I had about 5-8 minutes before she furniture-walked herself back over to try again. Repeat until she finally got interested in something else.

Both my kids were taught 'you do not touch mom or dad's devices'. We are their parents, not their friends and our job was to teach them respect for other people's stuff. In the same way, now that my kids are 19 and 14 we do not touch THEIR devices.

Pets? We've mostly had cats over the years. Dogs, when we had them, were outside animals. Cats were trained not to get on counters or tables - or desks (where phones would sit).

As far as control is concerned, the only thing I am controlling is me. I cannot control other people or my environment - which is why I protect my phone and put it only in certain spots.

Started off with Defender and then moved to Commuter. With the Commuter it’s 2 piece but way thinner and you can peal it off when in bed or to look at it and easy to press it back on. You use your own screen protector - the Defender one sucks anyway.

I really don’t understand the attraction of not using a case and I suppose this is the consequence of dropping your phone without one. I’ve had my iPhone about 4 weeks now and dropped it probably 5 times on hard floor by accident. It’s not worth the risk for me but I don’t mind others choosing to go naked if that’s their thing.

I believe that’s unlikely as it costs more via excess to pay for a broken screen never mind a whole new phone.

As far as I am aware, Apple will only deal with damage to the phone that impairs the functionality of the device. Cosmetic ware does not affect functionality and is therefore not included.
