[...] Both my kids were taught 'you do not touch mom or dad's devices'. [...] Cats were trained not to get on counters or tables - or desks (where phones would sit).

As far as control is concerned, the only thing I am controlling is me. I cannot control other people or my environment - which is why I protect my phone and put it only in certain spots.
I am happy that you have had success in keeping things under control. My experience has been somewhat different, but maybe it would possible to train my surroundings in this way. I vividly remember moving objects (including phones) further and further towards the center of the kitchen table, as the reach of my oldest daughter extended. At that point I was the one being trained 😁.

Started off with Defender and then moved to Commuter. With the Commuter it’s 2 piece but way thinner and you can peal it off when in bed or to look at it and easy to press it back on. You use your own screen protector - the Defender one sucks anyway.
Never owned the Commuter but I like the look of it and would probably go for it in future as it strikes a better balance than the Defender which is purely designed for rugged toughness.

Play with fire yah gonna get burned (unless you’re very careful, then you are the fire master).

Good on you for living the way Apple intended their phones to be appreciated, though.

I really don’t understand the attraction of not using a case and I suppose this is the consequence of dropping your phone without one. I’ve had my iPhone about 4 weeks now and dropped it probably 5 times on hard floor by accident. It’s not worth the risk for me but I don’t mind others choosing to go naked if that’s their thing.

The real question is why do we make phones with stainless steel when everyone just covers it up with a cheap plastic case anyway?

Eeeeeyup. Same haha

It’s a constant exercise: “will putting this here be grabbed by child hands?”

My son learned pretty quickly to respect his stuff. Because of that, he earned the devices we eventually bought him. My daughter is a different story. While we enforced discipline upon her regarding our stuff, she has consistently disregarded her own stuff to the point where we are only buying her the bare minimum that law or school requires of us.

She has dented an iPad Air 2 I had. That led to a total ban of her handling my iPads. The first day she had an iPhone (iPhone 5, my wife's old phone) she lost it. We got it back, but I had to replace the SIM.

A couple years ago I handed her a pristine 6s, again my wife's old iPhone. Until I got her an iPhone SE2 this year she had managed to drop it several times and crack the glass. When I gave her the SE2 it went instantly into an Otterbox Defender Pro case. She whined - but she isn't the one paying for the device and because she won't pay any attention that's what she gets.

She had a Lenovo Thinkpad I bought her a couple years ago. Blazing fast SSD. She managed to kill it by spilling pink lemonade all over the keyboard. Now her only PC is the one school has issued to her. We got in a big old fight a week ago because she insists on leaving her purse on the gym floor and not in her locker where it should be. Her phone is in her purse, the phone I haven't paid off yet. And someone decided to try and run off with her purse! She's the only one in the house I've NOT dropped insurance or AC+ on. Everybody else I can trust with their phones/devices.

So, yes. I got her to respect our stuff. I just can't get her to respect HER stuff!

I tend to buy an expensive case and much prefer the look on a case. Stainless steel is prone to scratching and I have no idea why our iPhone Pro’s use it. It also shows fingerprints constantly. I’d much rather aluminium personally on the Pro and it would shave off a hell of a lot of unnecessary weight on a product that is carried everyday.

The message was understood after a few times of hands being slapped away and butts being spanked. Also, I'm usually right next to where I've placed my phone. I don't usually leave the room without it.

speaking as someone who genuinely has never dropped an iPhone ever...
(frankly I don't really know how as an adult with average motor skills I can take an object in my hand and, whilst applying the appropriate amount to care and attention with a £1000+ device in my hand, its possible to let go!!)

Anyway, always case mine - but one main thing is although I have the 14 pro max.... I really don't like the way it feels without a case. the edges are cold, hard, and sharp and holding it in your hand feels uncomfortable and unnatural. The older curved edge models were far, far more comfortable to hold. A case makes it nicer to hold.

I've dropped my iPhone hard enough twice to require replacement. A 6+ where I cracked the screen and my current phone, the 11 Pro Max where I shattered the back glass and cracked the front. In both cases I was ill and consequently not watching what I was doing.

As to edges, I still have a device with curved sides. But my first iPhone was the iPhone 5 and I've always preferred the flat sides. Flat sides also make it easier to pick up. Finally, I'm not using my iPhone as a substitute computer/media device like a lot of people do. I'm around computers and TVs 24/7 so I use those while my iPhone gets used as a phone.

I do use my iPad at night, before bed to read the news. That's a sixth gen iPad so it has curved sides and it's irritating. One of these days I'll upgrade.

I have the Commuter on my 14 PM - really like it.

If you were willing to pay for an apple care+ repair anyway, there's also the possibility that you drop it a second time, but harder.

I believe that’s unlikely as it costs more via excess to pay for a broken screen never mind a whole new phone.

As far as I am aware, Apple will only deal with damage to the phone that impairs the functionality of the device. Cosmetic ware does not affect functionality and is therefore not included.
Doesnt matter, there are ways to get it replaced. If a customer wants to pay apple should. For the record i have done it before so ymmv

Yep, if you drop it down the stairs a few times by “accident” then you will be able to claim a new phone. It’s not exactly moral or environmentally friendly and requires the destruction of a perfectly good phone thus increasing the premiums for other AC+ users. I would prefer just to use a damn case, save a lot of money, time and effort, and be done with it.

One can also just go through the express replacement process to get the phone replaced. So many ways to do this.

So how are you able to obtain an express replacement if you are the OP and you have only inflicted minor cosmetic damage to your phone?

Express replacement is designed for people who have damaged their phone to the point it no longer functions properly, i.e. cracked screen, cracked glass back, damaged SOC, etc… rather than scratches, dents and dings.

Not sure I totally understand the attraction of having an unprotected phone. Previously had a 4S and then a 1st gen SE used exclusively in Otterbox Defender cases, and dropped them numerous times without damage. Since these were used for many years I am used to having a thick phone. After I drowned the SE I went with a 13 mini--it felt extremely slippery and thin, so it now resides in a case a bit thinner than the Defender--it has an integrated clear front "glass" which is a fingerprint magnet. The phone feels more secure in my hands with the case.

I have been shopping for a used 13pro and have noticed that the majority of them have surface scratches or pits on the front glass--although the glass scratch resistant, it is clearly not scratch proof. The raised rear camera lenses seem like a great place to garner scratches as well. It would seem prudent to use a case that is flush with the lenses.

As far as the OP's concern goes--the phone will certainly collect more usage marks over the course of ownership. Just like a new car, the first door ding is the worst, but it is just the first of many. I'd live with the marks--will hopefully serve as a visual reminder to be careful with the phone in the future.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t they just make modifications to AppleCare this year? For example in 2021 when I got AppleCare for my iPad it was one fee for two years. Now you pay for AppleCare and it’s only for 12 months. I do understand that now it’s for unlimited accidents. So do you prefer the way it was before or the way it is now?

I've been going caseless on my 14 Pro and everything was going fine with the exception of a tiny micro-scratch on the screen (before I decided to at least use a screen protector). All I had was a screen protector and my Apple Wallet on the phone.

Last night my phone fell off the top of my toilet somehow and now have 2 scuff marks around the bezel and also a scuff mark on the camera bump, but thankfully not on the lens. I do have AppleCare +, but I know they don't cover scratches or scuffs.

Anyone know if there are any places out there I can have them fix the scuff marks?
Eh, you should probably just wait a few more months. Odds are you'll probably drop it again.

iphones you can do monthly subscriptions or pay in full.

I know that for macbook it used to be one fee but that changed last year so you can now do yearly subscriptions for the macbook. I havent purchased applecare+ for the ipad so im not sure if i think its across the board.

I wish apple could do yearly subscriptions for the iphones as well instead of monthly
