You gave it a wax then drove it in the dirt?
Silly.

I think we already went over this. And besides, wax repels dirt/grime. Ever thought maybe that's why I waxed it? Are you saying that people that don't have paved roads should just not wax their vehicles and let them rot away because their paint will flake off and leave bare metal? Get over it.

Folks around here may not be from down east jc85 and don't understand the weather we get. You did the right thing by waxing it. Nice little car.

I'm more of a classic American car (read pre-70's) person, myself. Been around cars a long time. I can pull good aspects from almost any make. I've had the chance to drive just about every make under the sun. Hands down the Rolls wins for comfort and luxury. Doesn't mean I'll buy one anytime soon.. Anyone dissing your car just doesn't know.

Have fun/drive safe.

I say that and other people dis your car and you jump on me? Dang kid, settle down. I just thought it was silly...sorry I was voicing an opinion in a thread you created----where you were probably looking for attention to your wax job.

No, I wasn't looking for attention. It was actually just kind of on a whim that I posted the pics. The only reason I "jumped on you" is because around here you have to wax your car otherwise the body will rust out in a matter of a couple years. And actually, the more you drive on dirt/crappy roads, the more often you should wax your car. Hence why I don't understand why it is "silly" to wax my car then drive it on the dirt. And it's ok you think it's silly, you just didn't understand how it works around here ;)

I really have to wonder about a country that turns a Holden Monaro into a Pontiac GTO...

By choice! :(

It wasn't my choice...I like the Monaro but they should have sold it as a Monaro. The GTO looks like a Grand Prix on steroids.

Thats Right! Land Rovers are the best and you know it.

Land Rovers have that "legendary" British build quality, which is the reason that the Brits lost their automotive industry. :p

Hey, what's the matter with the pics? And who is so anal that they won't drive a car on dirt? I live in maine, its going to happen. And no, its my 3rd vehicle actually. I just really like it. For those of you that don't, I don't care. I think that for a cheap econo-box it really sets the standards quite high. 0-60 in 8 seconds, 33mpg and I love the way it looks. Show me a bone stock sephia that will do 0-60 in 8 seconds.

A lot of people on this forum have cars that are beyond the means of most middle class Americans, and I guess it's easy to forget what most of us drive when you've got a $30k-plus ride. Still I'm happy with my '99 Nissan Altima. 0-60 in 8 flat as well. Heavier than your car but 20HP more. Plus I have a 5-speed manual which aids agressive driving and improves gas mileage. :D

I'm really anal about keeping my car clean but after a summer of archeological fieldwork it was a mess...Finally got it looking good again last month but I've never waxed it though, too lazy.

My car is a 5spd as well. I've actually never owned an auto...

I started with a 1994 Mercury Tracer - 5spd
then
1994 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 - also 5spd
and now
2001 Ford ZX2 - yet again, 5spd.

What can I say? Automatics are boring. And for those of you that will post otherwise, you will never change my mind. Just because some cars are fun automatic, doesn't mean they wouldn't be better manual (imo.)

Hey now, with proper instruction from Americans (Ford) and Germans (BMW), there is no reason that the British cannot make fine, fine automobiles! ;) :D

LOL. :D

To be fair, the best (IMHO) British carmakers, TVR and Noble, are wholly British owned. But they don't count as far as mass-production cars go.

We lost 3 Land Rovers in Saudi Arabia. First one the engine blew up, second one the bonnet (hood for you septics ;) ) came off and tore most of the roof off and the third I drove into a rock while wadi bashing (had fun explaining that one). POS cars really, apart from the rock one.
Best thing that happened to the UK car industry was to be taken over by foreigners :p.
Is that car sexy in the States? I hope not

TVR isn't British anymore - and their build quality is worse than anything else

Speaking of all this...mmm...whatever really happened with the new Lotus Elise that uses a Toyota engine? I don't think I've ever seen one on the road, which surprises me considering I see a lot of cars that cost a lot more, were bought for eye candy appeal, and have a lot less of it than the Elise does. Plus it has a cute name. :)

What were you doing destroying Land Rovers in Saudi Arabia? In the military?

What you need is a Hummer (a REAL one, not the girly-man poser H2 or H3). We've got thousands in the US shuttling yuppies and high-powered executives between Starbucks that need to be transplanted to a more appropriate environment...

Ahh, forgot about that. Bad luck, chaps. Bad build quality or no, I'd sell a testicle for one. My dad actually had a 1969 TVR Vixen S1, with a Ford Cortina GT engine. Awsome little car, like a go kart. Nothing like today's TVRs though.

I saw one in upstate New York this summer....and it wasn't even the US-spec one, but the older Series 1 model with the Rover engine. I seriously considered killing the guy, stuffing his body in the trunk and driving off in the Lotus.

Then I remembered their was no trunk. ;)

Yes. Part of Al-Yamamah. Selling the Saudis dodgy British kit, and then taking the cash to repair it - we're not as stupid as we look ;). To be fair to Land Rover we also went through a fair number of Isuzu Troopers, Nissan Patrols, Mitsubishi Pajeros (they caused a good laugh amongst the Spanish speakers). None of them lasted very long. Amazing what you can do do to a car when someone else is paying. The only good ones were Landcruisers. Someone tested a Hummer but they weren't so good for lugging the shopping back, and were a bit of a target so that was a no-no

The Russian chappie hasn't yet managed to improve the quality but I'd love one too. The Typhon would do nicely :)

I like the Liberty, its a cross between the wrangler and the cherokee. Great small SUV. Plus anything that has "Trail Rated" stamped on the side is alright with me.
I have a Liberty and I drive the s*** out of it. I put that 4WD to good uses all the time. If it wasn't for all my skid protection and rock rails no telling how bad of a shape my Lib would be in.

It's a fun vehicle but I think I'll be venturing back to the Japanese world of cars after this. When it comes to my Jeep, I offroad a lot. Not because I need to but because I make excuses to go do it :).

Don't be dissing Land Rovers. Which model were they?

I just too my rover in for a power steering leak and a sticky door lock. :)

They are beautiful cars, not mechanically or electrically, but they look awesome in my book.

British built cars are up there with the best of them.

Shame we couldn't quite get labour relations right...

Management and Unions spent more time plotting against each other than making cars.. :(

We waste so much time with this in the US as well...it was one of the most depressing things to me about working in the industry. :(

And I do really respect the British style as far as cars go...I was just having a little fun. I drive a Mazda6, but if quality issues, the distance to the nearest dealer, and my current grad student status hadn't impaired, I would definitely have gotten a Mini instead. I really had my heart set on one.

Wouldn't that be funny if the Spaniards named a car the "wanker"? :D

Here in the States Landcruisers are pretty expensive (you can't get one without all the luxery appointments in the $40-50k range) but they're built like a tank.

Maybe the Saudis should take a page from Libya's book and buy some Lamborghini LM002 trucks. Countach engine, yeah!

Hmmm, I guess a Hummer makes a different sort of statement in the Middle East than it does here....

Yeah, its a 2001 ZX2. Ford started production of the Escort ZX2 in 1998, dropped the escort label in 2001 (the regular escorts died in 2000) and now it is the ZX2. 2003 was the last year of production for the ZX2. Nice sporty little car with the ever popular 2.0 zetec motor. And I think it is a very nice little car with lots of taste compared to civics, caveliers and neons...which is what I see all day on campus

I can respect the ZX2

I got to drive one at an autocross a year ago. The guy that had it had aftermarket suspension, sport exhaust (not loud) and some nice wheels and tires. The engine is quite smooth, and with the suspension the chassis is quite nimble!

I drive what others don't like too, a 90 VW Jetta coupe, VW Rabbit, and VW Scirocco, so don't feel bad :)

You were using the "Windows ME" of cars in Saudi Arabia. Sorry, but those Rovers aren't the best, are they. ;)
