Exactly my first thought.

The current size is just fine for many. If Apple can squeeze a little more real estate out of that by coming closer to the bezel fine.

Elongated? Huh?

For those who need a new form factor every five minutes get whatever you like from the many offerings, screen size and all.

I don't need an ipad that fits into my pockets!

No, no, no, no NO!

I really wish people would stop legitimizing this ridiculous rumor. This just doesn't work.

Firstly, stretched looks ugly (sure, subjective). Sure some apps could stretch well (twitter, facebook, rss readers, etc), but all "full screen" apps (games, GPS, etc) would need to be COMPLETELY redesigned or have huge ugly bars at the top and bottom. No thank you. Plus, most apps (aside from videos) would look ridiculous in landscape.

and.... the number one reason why this would be a terrible design choice... it would be extremely difficult to access notification center with one hand for 82.3%* of all iPhone users. Don't believe me? Try some one handed typing, then casually try to pull down notification center from somewhere between the speaker and the top of the iPhone. Talk about a finger stretching exercise.

*yeah that number is made up. Bite me

i dont think that 80 percent of people use notification center, and 60 percent of them dont know what it is.

It could not look more ugly than this mockup. Apple would be pretty dumb to do something like that just to squeeze in one more row of icons. Seriously, what kind of reasoning is that? Some of these rumor sites do anything to get more hits.

Wow! Really? I think this must be the first time I've seen a mock-up of a 4-inch iPhone.

Wait…no…this is the hundredth. Nevermind.

LOL!! Oh that's funny. Let's have another crack at that:

1. Value ergonomics and comfort when holding a phone
2. Not interested in getting into a pissing contest with Android users
3. Not obsessed with having the biggest di... er, I mean phone.

Larger phones aren't uncomfortable though. I'm not saying make it as big as the Note...although I am kinda interested in this rumored 5" phone HTC is making. But I think it should at least be Galaxy Nexus size. 4.6 retina screen would be amazing
A tall skinny phone will look bad, but a larger phone overall will look better than the current version.

This is like the deformed product of some mad engineer with a human centipede fetish.

Yeah

I'm stealing this from another post, but why can't they keep the 3:2 ratio and make the phone look like this?

Yes I agree. The 3:2 is beautiful, as far as proportions go. The mockup at 16:9 is well done, updating the rumors into an object we can see.

Maybe this is a problem similar to when the unibody construction came about on the MacBook. If they're going to change the iPhone, they will probably try to rebuild it from scratch, component by component, until a 4", 3:2 ratio is supported from the ground up with a new Ive design.

It sucks that bigger can be seen as better, as far as the competition goes. I could see someone switching phones because of screen size.

On a nerdy note, I wonder how prominently the Golden proportion (Fibonacci series) plays into the current iPhone dimensions.

And maybe that's the reason for the semi-metal back?
Maybe the current antenna-frame can't support the frequencies needed for international 4G?
Just brainstorming here.....

I guess it comes down to how many markets they're interesting in supporting in their LTE deployment on release day - it is all speculation at this point but it'll be interesting how it all pans out in the end.

They just need to go bigger, but thinner. Keep the aspect ratio.

Now one way I could see them changing the aspect ratio is to have old apps center onto the page, having a border around it. That said, probably not.

If it were me, I'd keep the screen 3.5" but I would add in iOS6 the ability to sync your phone to your iPad. That way you can answer calls on it, AND you have to buy an iPad. You could seamlessly jump between the two, and the iPad functions as a base station with a nice speaker phone.

Just another market Apple can start to reach into.

Then the next AppleTV could have the ability to have caller id pop up on it. You answer with your iPad via the speakerphone or your iPhone. Then they could integrate this into OSX Simba (or whatever they call it).

An absolutely terrible idea that will not happen. Adds zero value - no idea who's watching HD movies on their phone and actually enjoys it. Harder to cover the whole surface of the phone with your thumb. I still think the current form factor is perfect and can't stand the trend toward bigger and bigger phones. I can read a book on a 3.5-inch phone and it fits great in my pocket. I'm nervous about the pressure to make a bigger iPhone.

Earlier this month, iLounge reported that Apple is indeed looking to move to a 4-inch display in the next-generation iPhone by increasing the height of the screen while keeping the width consistent. With the report including a number of other specifics including measurements for the new device, we commissioned Ciccarese Design to produce some higher quality mockups of what such a device might look like.

As had been proposed in earlier speculation, a taller display could allow Apple to add one more row of icons to the iPhone's home screen, moving to five rows per page plus the row of pinned icons in the dock at the bottom of the screen.

Increasing the diagonal measurement of the iPhone display from 3.5 inches to 4 inches while maintaining the same width as the current display adds approximately 11 mm (0.45 inch) to the height of the display. With iLounge's report indicating that the new iPhone's body will measure in at approximately 125 mm, which is 10 mm taller than the iPhone 4S, the spacing for the components above and below the display would remain roughly the same.

The mockup also shows a smaller dock connector as has been rumored by several sources, as well as a flat metal panel in the central portion of the rear shell of the iPhone, in line with iLounge's claims.

Ciccarese Design has also provided us with an interactive 3D model of this mockup, accessible via WebGL-enabled browsers. On OS X, Safari users can turn on WebGL by first navigating to Preferences -> Advanced -> Show Develop menu in menu bar and then choosing the "Enable WebGL" option from the Develop menu that appears.

It should be noted that iLounge's claims have been directly contradicted by a recent report from iMore, which claims that Apple has yet to settle on a final form factor for the next-generation iPhone but that there appears to be no change to the aspect ratio of the display and that there will be no metal panel on the rear of the device. Both iLounge and iMore have offered accurate information in the past, and thus it remains to be seen which source is closer to the mark on this round of rumors.

Article Link: What a Tall 'iPhone 5' with 4-Inch Display Looks Like

Just so you all know, this is complete BS. There is no information released to anyone about the size, depth, color, or features of a new iPhone. You know why???? Because the decision on all of those has yet to be made. So just an FYI, anything you see or hear about a new iPhone on this website or any other that is not directly from Apple is complete crap. Macrumors thought that the iPhone 5 was going to come out last year. OMG!!! There is no iPhone 5 look at that.... Anything you see or hear is nothing more than a creative discussion piece created on some virgins home computer using photoshop or some other editing software. When a new iPhone is released or when all those decisions on size, features, etc.... are made, im sure we will be the first to know. But as for right now, there is NO information on any new iPhones.

I think it's a very attractive render.

And to all the naysayers on this thread: who are you kidding? Only an act of God will stop 90% of you getting the next one, no matter its shape, specs, or your bank balance. And the other 10% will no doubt be mocking it maliciously right until the moment you wave it smugly at everyone else. That's the way of the naysaying Apple Fan.

I couldn't have said it any better. It always comes down to when the product arises and all of the same people saying they won't end up doing. Although there are a few whom have held out for a few years. I believe holding out will be no more

A bit larger screen might be nice, but I'm satisfied with my 4S. However, if a bigger screen only means the iPhone gets taller, and not taller and wider, then it's a non-starter for me.

Why in the world do to people want a WIDER phone
You realized that makes it HARDER to hold in your hand, and it woul be even harder with a longer AND WIDER iPhone
The screen IS bigger and looks great just with extra length
U want that thing wide might as well get a galaxy note haha

I could just as easily ask you why you do NOT want a wider phone. It's an equally irrelevant question. People's preferences vary, something most people on these forums don't seem to understand: Don't like what I like? ... must be something wrong with you is the typical response.

A galaxy note is 83 mm wide. An iPhone 4S is 59 mm wide. Surely the iPhone could be made wider without going to the extreme you [humorously?] suggested.

Android has been doing 4.3"+ for over 2 years now. If Apple thinks an additional half inch screen is going to wow people, the company is completely out of touch. The iphone 5 better have a 4.5" or larger screen, or I am switching to Android.

Go ahead and switch haha since the screen is ALL you care about in a CELL PHONE lmao

Sounds like ure shopping for a TV haha

Well my thought is it's just not in apples style either
If you think about it, wide is fat
Long is tall and elegant
No one wants to be fat, but most people like to be tall -- similar concept for a phone
An extra mm is as far as I would go

iPhone/IOS haters

Don't know about others, but I am getting pretty tired of all the drivel spewed about on these iphone threads that go something like "...Apple better do ___, or my next phone is an Andriod/Win8 phone".

I don't think that I'm a fanboi, but I do think I am a realist. Therefor, until there are shops everywhere selling android/win phone docks and accessories; until there are hundreds (or thousands) of manufacturers in *other* industries lining up to support Apple mobile products such as music, photography, movie, game studios, etc, etc. - and until the day when Apple doesn't completely and utterly pwn the high end smartphone (and tablet) market, please spare us the "Apple is so dated, my next phone is going to be a brandX..." rhetoric. You are just delusional if you think that there is any manufacturer/platform that comes close to the vertical integration into several markets that Apple has achieved. Instead, why not try to contribute something valuable to the discussion of possibilities for future versions of IOS/iPhone/iPad??

Iamthinking.

Gross metal back

hate the metal back. Jony Ive would nvr let something that hideous looking come out of his lab. Lets hope that the design team still has some sway around the company to prevent something like that ever seeing the light of day

If they actually do come out with this, then how will previous applications look and work on it? i mean i guess they could keep it the same res, but just black out the screen that isnt used, but then that would kind of defeat the purpose of having more real estate. and im sure most app devs might be a little annoyed with an extra resolution to work it.
