Has anyone considered that the longer length might be necessary to accomodate the larger battery and the antenna frame needed for true 4G?
Apple isn't going to make a change purely for aesthetics but if the design requires it then so be it.
One thing that I'm sure Apple will not do is produce an other non-4G phone.

SOOOOO STUPID!!! The iPhone 4/4S is as big as I want my phone!!! I'm not going to carry my phone in a man purse or a holster like all of the Android sheep do!

I've had every iPhone to date and will keep buying every model they bring out BUT if it's going to be any longer than the current iPhone I will keep the current iPhone until its unusable due to not excepting iOS updates in the future.

I will not buy this crap if it ends up as the next iPhone

I really hope they don't stretch the actual phone, the 4S fits fine in my pocket and works fine with one hand, any bigger will reduce usability. If they do increase to 4" I would prefer increased screen height than a thinner bezel, bezels any thinner than the iPhone 4S cause 3rd party cases get in the way of side swipes, an issue I had with my original iPad case, even my 4S case can make dragging icons from one screen to another difficult. As others have mentioned there's plenty of space for a 4" taller screen in the existing chassis, just move the speaker grill up a bit and the home button down a touch.

Rather than messing with proven display sizes I hope they'll invest in some form of advanced haptic screen feedback, the biggest problem with games is the lack of a button kind of feel under your thumbs, a screen that'll allow you to feel patterns and shapes under your fingers would storm the market... at least until Samsung copies the idea!

I find it hilarious that you call them "Android sheep" when you're complaining about something design-wise being different from the norm...?

One of my friends bought a Lumia 900 because AT&T gave two of them for free because of some Nokia software issues!! Awful looking phone. Huge. Feels very unnatural. I love my iPhone 4S. I don't care for a bigger screen.

I just looked at the Lumia at the AT&T store this afternoon and I agree with you 100%. Apple does not need to change the size of the phone or the screen.

So I currently take it that at the moment, your iPhone is the exact size and dimensions of your pocket, and you have to lube up the iPhone before pocketing it?

Because unless you take into account the Galaxy Note, the larger screened Android phones are barely bigger than the iPhone. Heck the first thing my iPhone does is fall over onto it's side in my pocket, I have enough room for my iPhone and my wallet, with room to spare for me to have my hands in my pockets.

The solution is simply, if you don't want to have to carry your phone around in a man-purse, don't wear extorionately tight skinny jeans. Your testicles will thank me.

I honestly like the size as is. I want to be able to hold it in my hand and hit anywhere on the screen with my thumb. I can just barely do that with the bumper on.

As for the aesthetics, I liked the look of the beveled edges on the mockup. it looks friendly. however,it also looks cheap. I really liked the teardrop design that someone photoshopped a while back.

No. No. No. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This would be the ugliest thing Apple has designed since... well... ever.

Why is the back of the mockup so ugly?
Do they not know apple at all?

You can barely hit anywhere with your thumb? On a 3,5inch screen? How small are your thumbs??

PEople, stop complaining for a bigger screen! It's a good thing, not a bad.
The size difference is small, and the screen would be a lot better!
Seriously, 3,5" is too small, even if retina... I mean I play some games on the iphone and when i have to drag something i can't see it because my thumb is covering it all... That's pretty dumb design, thus -> bigger screen!

While I agree that Apple will likely extend the screen to 4 inches by changing the aspect ratio to something closer to 16x9, I don't agree with this render. They won't make the phone significantly longer, Apple will instead reduce the top and bottom bezel of the iPhone to fit a longer screen within the same basic frame.

Although they may need to slightly increase the height of the phone, there is no way Apple is going to make such a disproportional and long iPhone.

To those that say it will be a headache to developers if Apple change the aspect ratio - that's just not true for many apps. Apple already have guidelines in place that an app's height UI needs to be dynamic, due to the phone-call and tethering banners which should simply reduce the available length/height of the app UI.

So a 16x9 iPhone would simply work the opposite way, the extra height to allow for extra vertical space for UI elements. This would allow the iPhone to still be retina with the exact same pixel density, just extra vertical space. It would allow Apple to provide a 4inch iPhone that everyone wants without too many compromises.

On the other hand, if they made an iPhone at 4 inches but keeping the current aspect ratio, there would be significant compromises. If they kept the same amount of pixels and just grew the size of the iPhone screen to 4 inches, it would be difficult to justify a 'Retina' quality screen with significantly reduced pixel density. If they increased screen resolution again, this would be expensive to manufacture and introduce yet another completely new resolution for app developers - a problem I'm sure Apple would want to avoid.

By increasing it to 16x9, all developers would have to do is make sure their app has a dynamic height view. Games would have more difficulties adjusting, but it shouldn't be a big problem. For apps that aren't updated for the new screen, they will simply place black borders above and bellow the app UI.

Not sure why I said "anywhere." I have trouble hitting the upper left side when holding with my right hand. I shouldn't need two hands to operate a phone.

I don't know why everyone insists on making these mockups. They're NOT going to change the aspect ratio of the iPhone. Most likely, they'll keep it the same size, if not, they'll increase the size to around 4", keeping the same amount of pixels, and thus slightly lowering the DPI.

Wrong.
Do you work here? Aspect ratio will change.

No, I can just make better educated guesses than you. ;)

I stand by what I said, I don't think the new iPhone will have a different aspect ratio. I just can't see Apple fragmenting their huge app library like that.

The more I look at this comparison, the more I truly hope it's a fake.

There's very little difference between the two.

A very modest increase in display size doesn't appear to offer much.

Imagine the keyboard how it would look like in landscape mode. :D Funny.

I do wonder what it would look like... Although I have to wonder how many people actually use landscape typing. Honestly ever since the orientation lock came about I permanently keep my iPhone orientation locked. In fact, I'm using the landscape keyboard right now just to remember what it's like. In my 4 years of iPhone ownership I've used landscape keyboard like 5 times.

I guess apple could always make it a split keyboard like the iPad...

I don't know, the taller iPhone is simply ugly...
