I don't know if anyone has suggested this yet (and I'm not saying it would be a good idea!), but the thought crossed my mind after first reading about this rumour, that Apple could keep the Dock visible at all times, even when third party apps are running, thereby keeping each app's screen ratio the same. This would have the advantage of being able to get to your most used apps from anywhere in a single click. But it would have the disadvantage of adding screen clutter (which isn't very Apple-like), and be prone to accidentally exiting apps. So I don't imagine Apple is going to do this—but perhaps it is a remote possibility.

Edited to illustrate with a modified version of MR's mockup:

Interesting thought, perhaps if they did implement something like this, it would work like notification centre, just from the bottom. So you could push it up and it doesn’t affect your app. Could also have a lot of possibilities for more useful muti tasking that doesn’t pause/disrupt the active app.

By that logic, Apple should just release a 5" iPhone and call it a day. Any move to change screen size will be primarily about usability rather than what the competition is doing. Besides, it's not like all/most competing smartphones have 4.7" screens or even that most consumers buy 4.7" screens. The competition spans a range of screen sizes from some even smaller than the iPhone to some much larger. With only one model iPhone, Apple isn't going to aim for some extreme but rather some sweet spot in the middle that hopefully most consumers will agree with. 4" is probably about right.

The top contendor's seem to be going for that size.
-HTC One X
-Galaxy Nexus
-Galaxy S III
-Droid Razrr
-LG Optimus 4X HD
-HTC Titan II (a Windows Phone phone!)

A 5" iPhone would be sweet. Obviously at that size it couldn't work for everyone. It might be slightly too big for some people. But really it's not as hard to use as it sounds. At that point it'd make a lot of sense if Apple released 2 sizes of the iPhone. Small and large. They could market the large one easily. It'd be some "elegant" and "revolutionary" note taking and media device.

Agreed.

I think this is the end of the number game ... it's never been very Apple like to "tack-on" things to the name of their product... I mean, we never had the iBook, the iBook 2.... Yes, they added G3 or G4 so you knew which processor they were using, but it wasn't a per-generation thing :)

and given the fact we don't have different naming codes on the phones anyway,
they all say iPhone.

Not to mention....

just imagine the headache of moving from a 4:3 screen to 16:9 for all of the app developers out there. at least retina was just a 2x issue...

The 2x issue is worse that people think. When you look at Universal Apps (ones that run on both iPhone and iPad but change layout accordingly), the problem is compounded.

As a user I want a redesign and a bigger screen, sadly as a development firm we want the resourcing issues to be resolved before any new form factors are introduced.

We have an interesting article on Retina here Retina Display joys and woes/

I dont know about the rest of you guys, but that elongated look seems rather odd. No hate, but i was picturing a larger overall screen rather than just vertical.

Yuck

I don't need a taller screen I need an overall LARGER SCREEN Apple!

It says "keeping the width consistent." That would mean a larger screen, not a taller screen. However, I think they meant to say "keeping the width constant." No one seems to be able to write simple sentences in English any more.

Bigger screen not bigger phone thankyou

They could fit a 4" screen like the one in the mockup in the current case without any problem.

Ok.... now someone make a mockup of a 4" iPhone with the normal 3:2 aspect ratio.

I know a ton of people want a bigger screen, and I would like a bigger screen, but not at the expense of a bigger phone. I guess I just have small hands, but I can't use any of these giant Android phones one-handed, so I think the current size is perfect.

I like the screen size, but why does the phone have to be that much taller? surely they can get rid of some of the bezel from the top and bottom.

the front should harbour as much screen real estate as possible. I dont like the amount of bezel there is on the top and sides.

There's plenty of room to fit a 4" screen within the current form factor without changing the aspect ratio. But I'm no engineer, so if they do need to change the form factor, make it a bit wider, not taller.

the iphone 4is already too damn tall keep the case the same size and use up more of the lame dead space that is in it now.. simple..

Lot of people would have a bigger screen as most of Android devices have BUT they do not want the size of the phone to increase....

I do not know any Android device with a dispaly bigger than the Iphone but overall size smaller than it :confused::confused:.

Moreover keeping the same device's size (and same battery:confused:) with a bigger screen, faster CPU & GPU, LTE, maybe NFC would result in a TERRIBLE battery life IMO.

best thing for customers would be to have the chance to choose between 2 different sizes but I think Apple would NEVER do it :(

I really would like a 4 inch device with an adeguate power source, if the price to pay to have the bigger screen means to have to charge the phone twice every day I would keep my ip4s... ;)

sorry if my English is not so clear but it is not my fors language... :)

I find it hard to believe that Apple 'haven't decided' on the screen size yet... I'd say Apple already knows exactly what size the screen will be.

Bit fo a headache trying to sort out how Retina/resolution fits into the equation for all the apps and developers. A requirement for new graphics could actually be a good opportunity for Apple to put some pain on developers and in the process weed out a lot of the garbage piling up in the app store.

Nice render ... but hoping the final product wows me a bit more. Don't be discouraged though ... good effort!

I'm not saying the iPhone isn't good - it's a brilliant device. However a few years back my phone was just over half the width of this and much shorter (albeit slightly thicker) and fitted in my pocket perfectly. I wouldn't go so far as to say that what we're seeing here is a tablet but I really think the iPhone is big enough as it is.

My main concern is if they are going to release a phone with LTE capabilities that they also include support for the 1800mhz frequency as well given that many countries that are currently have on trial, deploying it or completed deploying are going for 1800mhz first then when the 700mhz opens up to provide a service on that which won't be, at the earliest, for another 1-2 years.

I'm also more interested in seeing phones with more storage capacity - 64GB is ok but I'd sooner them offer a 128GB model which would really make my day. If they offered a 128GB iPhone 5 model my response would be:

shut-up-and-take-my-money.jpg

The more I look at this, the more I can kind of see this happening. Maybe not exactly the way it looks here, but the thing of it is, if you forget the top half of this rendering it is a bit like the original iPhone. There's no way the glass would taper like that though, it would chip too easily.

If apple actually did go this route, I'd probably be okay with it. It looks like the mockup isn't wider, so I'd still be able to use it with my stubby fingers.
I don't like the wider screens, because it's not one-handed usable, for someone like me, when I tried them at the at&t store.
If it's a choice between a taller or wider screen to reach 4", I'll opt for taller.

The back has too many components made of different materials. This drives up production costs.

True but Apple did patent that bonding method for combining different materials into one seamless part.
They must have been considering something like this at some point.
Don't see why it's necessary in the iPhone though if they're retaining the metal antenna-frame.

I was a 3GS and then a iPhone 4 user, I jumped ship on 4S as I wanted a bigger screen so bought the HTC Sensation XE, using it on Android ICS v4, it has a 4.3" screen and I love the screen ice I have to say. I've seen fiends iPhone 4S now, and honestly I couldn't go back to a 3.5" screen now, I use my phone a lot for surfing etc.

I am an Apple fan, I have an iMac, iPad 2, numerous iPods, Apple TV's etc. I love Apple products.

Do we honestly think Apple will "only" go up to a 4" screen ,surely they have to go bigger than 3.5" with on Android anyway, 4.7" screens are becoming the norm.

I'd like to get the iPhone 5, but as I say I can't have a 3.5" screen, I'm even tempted on getting the new Samsung S3, with a 4.8" screen, just unsure on the physical size, couldn't go any bigger for portability in the pocket, e.g. Samsung note is a ridiculous size for pocket for me personally.

So do I wait for an announcement (maybe at WWDC) or get the S3, and be happy with my Apple gadgets at home, iPad, Apple Tv etc...mmm...

And maybe that's the reason for the semi-metal back?
Maybe the current antenna-frame can't support the frequencies needed for international 4G?
Just brainstorming here.....

LOL!! Oh that's funny. Let's have another crack at that:

1. Value ergonomics and comfort when holding a phone
2. Not interested in getting into a pissing contest with Android users
3. Not obsessed with having the biggest di... er, I mean phone.

Brillant... :D

Stellar Humor!
