Ah, thanks for the explanation - given that I am from Across The Pond, (and have never visited the United States) there are culinary (and cultural) peculiarities in that society and country that I have never, ever, heard of.

Ahem... marmite, mince pie, etc etc... the list can go on for a while... haha ;)

I'm pretty boring. I like tomato, onion, pickle, lettuce, mustard, cheese (Preferably pepper jack) and bacon. Though I did have one with guacamole and fried egg with the above and that was pretty good. Not something I'd eat every day though.

Oh, yes, marmite: A favourite of my late father - to the utter mystification of the rest of the family.

As for mince pies, as the food writer Nigel Slater explained in a brilliant piece that I read around 20 years ago, - which I read with rapt fascination, historically, - in the Middle Ages, these were savoury pies, and had contained real meat and real mince and various flavourings. The modern version meets with my mother's complete approval - inexplicably, she loves them.....and wolfs them greedily.

In all your traveling I'm amazed that you've never been to the states! Please visit. You can set up a MR tour, visiting us along the way. Could wind up a pretty inexpensive trip too if you stay with us and let us feed you regional specialties!

Yes, three continents visited, travelled and worked in, but - curiously - that does not include any of the Americas, let alone the United States.

But, thanks for the invitation - and the idea of visiting Stateside MR friends and sampling regional specialities (gumbo, jambalaya...) does have a certain appeal, I must admit.

ESPN's Scott Van Pelt once suggested putting Ranch salad dressing on a hamburger. No thank you. Now, duplicating something close to what In-N-Out does with their Double-Double cheeseburger, that I might do.

What about garlic mayo, or the classic French aioli?

Hmm, never tried either of those.

The garlic idea, I must admit, came from my Armenian friend/co-worker. We were out camping and cooking burger patties over the campfire, and he started putting garlic on his. When he saw the dumbfounded expression on my face, he said, "Trust me." And I did. And I was amazed :D

I’ve made homemade lamb and mint burgers tonight so will probably enjoy with lettuce, cheese, deli mustard and ketchup.

Burgers consist of:
Lamb mince
Smoked Paprika
Cumin
Oregano
Salt n Pepper
Breadcrumbs
Beaten egg
Mint sauce

That’s a meatloaf, not a burger.

In my world, meatloaf has eggs and breadcrumbs, burgers have meat and seasoning. Maybe a combination of meats, but still just meat. Period.

Now, I’m not denigrating a good meatloaf sandwich, but I seriously object to calling it a burger.

Yeah different cultures have different interpretations I suppose.

I used to love Escoffier Sauce Diable (They also made a Sauce Robert, which I didn't care for.) Great on Steak! Never tried it on a burger. I can't get it here in the USA any more. I wonder if it still exists across the pond?

Nope, just garlic (not garlic mayo) ... try it

I'll try garlic on anything.

I have to say that I have never come across it, but will keep my eyes open.
