Not saying it isn't working RIGHT NOW, but how long can Apple 'do their own thing' before 'their own thing' becomes not as good as what Android are doing?

Obviously Apple could be (or has been, depending on who you're talking to) surpassed because their product is viewed as inferior...but I would imagine a number of those sales causing a shift in market share relate to new customers entering the low-end of the market, and not necessarily in search of the "best" product available.

Apple was in TERRIBLE shape after that. There's no way you could say that's the case now. Stop being such a troll.

someone clearly doesn't know their Apple history. The company flourished initially after the ousting of Jobs. In fact it was dubbed the first golden age of the Macintosh. It wasn't until they decided to sue Microsoft that everything started going downhill for the company...focusing on a losing lawsuit that coincided with the release of several dud products.

Then they bought Next and got Jobs back which is when they got way better.

Yup #1 company in the world needs all the advice it can get. I'm Sure Tim Cook has been losing sleep worried about the number 2 company. Call Apple tomorrow Tell who ever answers the phone you need to talk to Tim because your going to save Apple.. :D

and now they don't have Jobs...and are in a prolonged court battle with Samsung.

I fail to see how they are in bad shape. They're breaking sales records with each new product launch and customers anticipate each new product more than the last. Apple products are all over the place and are being use in schools, homes, and at workplaces.

That was because they decided to launch a ton of Mac models at once. Those were the duds.

I never said the company was in bad shape. You're the one who said "Apple was in TERRIBLE shape after that."

Yes, and after he was forced out was when Apple's stock and market share dropped a ton. You said:

Apple - Jobs = Apple after they forced out Jobs in '85.

...implying Apple isn't in good shape right now, which they weren't after Jobs was forced out.

the company was in great shape...for about 9 years.

The flaw in this is that you assume that the high end 4.8" premium Android handsets are what make up the majority of that 68% when it is in fact not.

Actually, I didn't mention the 4.8" screen and wasn't specifically referring to that one. All of the Android screens are in the 4+" range, I think most around 4.3-4.5, even at the low end of the price range. But of course there are a lot of phones which have a wide range of screen sizes and types, and the S3 is at the top end.

Apple does have a free phone (3GS) and a competitive cheap one (the 4 starts at $99), so if price was the main consideration we would see those sales going to Apple if all else was considered equal. The fact that Android is still gaining implies that other features, such as the screen among others, are compelling enough to sell the phone.

Apple should release 4 different size iPhone models, each with different screen sizes and resolutions. Some with names like HD, Xtreme, and Super!! This way they will steal away most of the android loving crowd.

And for the rest of us that like apps built on consistency and reliability, nuts to us.

Or, worse...they can release macs in different sizes or attach names like 'air,' 'pro,' 'mini,' or 'nano' to their products. That'll NEVER work, right?

Cause, you know, having a variety of sizes to appeal to different consumers and reliability are mutually exclusive.

Not quite sure how Apple has gotten to where they are without you.

Will never understand why people here think they know better than Apple what Apple should do. And this comes from a VP of Marketing.

So are you saying that Apple is run perfectly, they make no mistake and there is nothing they can do differently? Wow, they must Gods!

Meanwhile Samsung is KILLING them, out-selling 3-1 just with the S3. Apple is only 17% of the smartphone market and yes, they can be doing much better. They could be 50% or more if not for their intransigence on their one phone fits all policy. They have many different computers and iPods, so why the stubbornness with one model of Phone? I know many people who have said they would love to have an iPhone if it were just bigger. If the 5 is not significantly enlarged, I'm going back to Android.

Oh no youre right... Designing apps for a fixed resolution is the same as designing for Mac OS. Silly me.

Yes, Samsung is indeed killing Apple in sales. However, when it comes to net profit, it's the other way around, by a mile. So, Apple is obviously doing something right, don't you think?

One company that tried this was hp with their palm line up. It was called small, medium and big. And we all know the rest.

Who said or implied it was the same? Not me. But that's a problem Apple will have to solve. There have been a number of potential solutions presented in this forum over the last few weeks. I'm sure they can figure it out.

Apple is certainly capable of putting more features into their Iphone5 but why should they. Keep in mind they have hundreds of patents that have never seen the light of day in any device as yet, certainly they could integrate a few. But why should they. At this point in time they want to put less in and have more for later it seems. They have to maintain their profit margin and regardless of what they put in the Iphone5 the sales will be off the chart.
