New leak apparently:

I hate numpads on laptops, the force you to sit slightly off center from the screen and i never use them.
thats why i proposed the screen touchpad ;-)

I think it should be like a $49 build to order option on the 17". Some people, me included, do not want it as standard, as it off centres the keyboard. Plus, I used to have an HP Pavilion Dv9600, and it had a 17" screen and the number pad. I don't recall using it more than 3 or 4 times in the two years I owned it. Plus, with a BTO option, the people who want it could get it, and everyone would be happy.

ill tell you a little story and then explain why i said it (if you still dont get it xD).

Some ash from my cigarette fell on my "o" in my unibody macbook (while still hot) and burned it. It still works but u have to press a little harder.
I called apple to see how much this is gonna cost to repair, they said around 150euros. Obviously i was surprised, its just a damn button! When i told them that, they said "we can't replace 1 button, you need to change the whole keyboard". (and maybe the whole bottom case,i don't remember).

My point is, a BTO option for a numpad will cost a lot a lot more because they have to make a whole new bottom case, new keyboards for this to work.
To be honest, 50 euros seems reasonable for a numpad that way (reasonable in apple prices, not normal :p), but since they're apple, i don't see that happening. Maybe at 100.
But as some people here said, the keyboard on the 17 inch does look small compared to the size of the laptop, so why not put a numpad on it?

Apple has probably researched this extensively and found most people do not want the numpad on a laptop.

I love the number pad on keyboards, but when it comes to laptops. Keep it off.
I would much rather sacrifice the number pad for a centered keyboard and a centered trackpad.

Apple doesn't ask what you want, they ask what you can do without. Notice no mouse button. Notice the absence of a backspace key. No print screen key either. Why would they add 16 more buttons that already exist in a different configuration? You don't even get a num pad on new imacs, unless you ask for it.

true, as you put it (and it is true), they don't like a thing done with 2 ways.
even the trackpad "tap" is disabled in the standard configuration (isn't it?). so i guess the numpad isn't needed in their logic ;)

in what universe do macs not have mouse buttons or backspace keys? plus print screen is easily achievable with the shortcut key press.

Amazon sells a USB numeric keypad for £2.99.

Missing?

Macbook Pros are missing an LCD under the trackpad that you can run iOS on so you can pull up a virtual numpad or whatever you want.

And I guarantee at some point they will contain this, and apple will say its a creative and revolutionary feature to stick one in and that no one could have seen them coming.

the 17 inch MBP looks stupid, it looks so awkward w/o a numpad, there's this HUGEEEE space for the palm rests, and it just looks weird.

I don't like having numpads. Theys force the manufacturers to justify the trackpad to the left - and I just don't like that.

I think there should be an option of the 17" for people who actually want that though.

Unfortunately I seem to be the only person with a 2010 17" that does (sometimes) have a numeric keypad :(

Once in a while, the only keys that work are "789/UIO/JKL/M," and they all produce numbers (or a decimal point). I must have the super-secret prototype that got out :)
