And I really hope for you guys that do need serious power get it. Indeed the MBP wouldn't be hurt to see some power boosting.
After hearing the latest rumor I'm glad I just bought a new 15" mid 2010 i7.

Word on the street is Apples lost interest & will discontinue computers completely due to the wild success of iPhones & iPuds. Or is that iPads? Turns out it's cheaper & easier to offer just two products for WalMart, Best Buy & Apple stores.
LOL

I know that in my case, I will wait. I am a patient person, so what I am going to do is take my tax refund and get one of the new ones.

In order to make sure this happens, and the womanfolk...aka Mrs. 'Oooooh, we can get this and you get your Macbook Pro later...' doesn't get her way, I am going to put $2500-3000 on an Apple giftcard and sit on that.

That way, I already bought the machine, I am just waiting for it.

If you put that coin in a CD and don't mind waiting a little while until after the nuBooks are released then you can have some extra $$$ for accessories (or can throw some $$ to stave off the wifey).

Smart...

Just tell her I put it on an Apple giftcard...

That's simple, since one of my good friends is a manager of a local Apple location.

Why don't you invest that money and then spend it when you are ready to buy?

Buy doing that you are actually devaluing your cash and the possibility to make some cash as well..

I will invoice you for my financial advice...:p

Thanks all. We just have to wait now...

Does Apple announce when are the next keynotes or something? Or are they "surprise" too?

Apple usually send around "teaser digital postcards" would be the best description around a week before their press conference keynote things. Usually with a picture and text snippet that doesn't really give anything away, but suggests the general area of the conference scope.

This was the last one:
https://www.macrumors.com/2010/10/13/apple-to-host-back-to-the-mac-media-event-on-october-20th/
which featured the Lion operating system (obvious) with new iLife, and new MBA.

Before that was the four clocks for 4 major cities, and was for the Beatles.

EDIT: I wouldn't expect a special event for new MBPs, but I could be wrong. They will likely just turn up on the Apple front page some day. We might get some leaked shots at any time between now and then, but we may not. I'm hoping for a pic of the motherboard like we did with the MBA, so we know what's in it!

I'd like to tell you 'NOOOOOO Apple would never do that'...but it has happened countless times with other once high-end companies.

I've had my eyes on the MBP market a few weeks now (also patiently waiting for the 2011 version and not in direct need for a MBP yet), and read various rumors regarding specs. Let me list some (I've mainly been watching 13" rumors, so I may not have taken some 15" or 17" stuff into account).

  • Removal of the optical disk (seems unlikely to me on 15" or higher, though)
  • Intel's Sandy Bridge microarchitecture
  • Intel's Light Peak technology (highly unlikely)
  • Quad Core processors on higher-end MBP's (personally, I believe it may be a BTO later, but certainly not a standard)
  • Redesign (if any of the above happens, a redesign appears to be necessary, but it could be a minor redesign)
  • 6 or 8 GB RAM standard (I don't expect that though)
  • Raise in max. RAM supported (12 or 16 GB)
  • Better graphics card
  • Higher screen resolution
  • Core i3 processor on 13" MBP
  • A solid state disk as standard disk for all laptops
  • Possible removal of the 13" model, some source noted 4 MBP models in 1H11

Nearly all rumors I've red are completely based upon speculation, and thus seem pretty unreliable to me.

Furthermore, I have the feeling (as Hellhammer already pointed out earlier), that most rumors handle about anything with the 'i' prefix. This gives me the impression that there may be no major MBP refresh at all in the near future, just a possible speedbump here or there. I sure hope not to be right on that, though. :)

I will copy my predictions from another post here. Here is the short-list:

• New CPU Architecture (Sandy Bridge)
• Quad-Core options
• New Integrated Graphics GPU
• Better Discrete Graphics, first 1GB graphics option on MBP
• SSD Standard across ALL models
• New case design, thinner
• Deep-sleep with up to 30 day sleep mode, instant-on

I think these things alone probably justify the wait...I just have to keep telling myself it's really worth waiting. When I factor all this in, I do think it is.

1440x900 resolution standard on 13" models
1680x1050 resolution standard across all 15" models
Possibility of antiglare option for 13" models
RAM expandability up to 16GB (two 8GB DIMMs)
Blade SSDs standard on all models
Better battery life, redesigned battery compartments like MacBook Air
Sandy Bridge i5 processor options on 13" models.

That is all I can think of now.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; nb-no) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Really can't decide if I want a 13 or 15. All depends on the speccs of the new 13 and 15. Then again the 15 feels so big compared to the 13. Still I need something powerful for engineering school

SSD on ALL New MBPs?

Nah. You think? I bet not. That would certainly cause a stir amongst many. I can see that possibility IF they were implementing Light Peak, but they're not.

Thoughts?

You want a 15" MacBook Pro with a 1920x1080 display? Do you realize how tiny all of the Mac OS X User Inteface elements would look at a PPI number as high as that? I think the PPI on the 17" is pretty high already, and it is 1920x1200. I think Apple will be sticking with 1690x1050 on the 15" as the max res for now, until resolution independence for the UI is introduced in OS X.

Steve will pronounce that "instant on" is not fast enough. The new models will have a proximity sensor so that the thing turns on before you can even open it.

Funny. I laughed, then I got this eery sort of...what if? lol

This is really all I want out of the next model. Modern processor is a given since C2D is retired, but the real choke point of any machine is the HD seek/write times. Making SSD standard would make an enormous boost in overall performance and if anyone is going to make solid state standard I think it has to be Apple. I'm sure it will tick off quite a few folks and the PC fanboys will be all "I've got 2TB storage and you paid $$$ for 128GB...." but between my desktop/server and ext HD I've got more than enough storage. Besides I'm not going to load it up with crap anyway.

Come on SSD!

I would like MB and MBP13 merged into something matte black with a SSD and a modern CPU.

As for what is actually going to happen in 2011, well, speculation is just that.

The SSD needs to become a more realistically priced option and for certain tiers possibly even a standard. They are gaining popularity in all fields. My friend who is an IT administrator at a local college told me a few days ago that he ordered about 50 (+/-) laptops for the senior professors and higher staff/administrators. They went with a pretty good Dell business line, but what surprised me is that they all has SSDs. Numerous staff of various positions were requesting solid state drives and the people with the money gave it the thumbs up after he discussed why it was a pretty good idea...both him and I are stunned.

Well they can always give more pixels to the interface elements, right?
Nowadays, I'm not considering any laptop that doesn't have Full HD, because of the works that I do.

Long as I can make it look as big as it is now, and as I get older, bigger. My old man was rockin' one of the first 42 inch Fujitsu Plasmavisions as his MONITOR at work. Imagine how weird that was a decade and a half ago or whenever it was. He's up to a 50 now. His damned icons are bigger than my entire MBP. I'm quite jealous.

I've noticed that some computers run weird when they are scaled down from their native resolution, so if they go to one trillion flashing LEDs with smurfs smoking weed on a Tuesday or whatever that fancy stuff is, it MUST be able to run at normal vision for us blind people. My contacts are thicker than your glasses ;)

macbook are laptops that have the hardware-software made from the same company, Apple. That means if they are gonna use an HD screen, they will fix the problem you're talking about. It's not like buying an HD screen and running windows which has no clue about the resolution you want.

13" Macbook Pro (high end) hopes:

i5 with sandy bridge
A decent boost in graphics processing
Thinner/'wedge like' body
Higher resolution display
Optical drive - not fussed. Remove if extra space is needed.

I'd buy that in a snap, not too fussed about an SSD as standard as I plan to upgrade manually to a Sandforce based drive when they become lower in price.
