I understand your question, as you wrote it, just fine. It's meaning is quite clear when read literally. If you meant to express some other thought then perhaps you should have written your original post to reflect that thought, and not the troll-like one you did write. My reading comprehension is above average, but I'm not a mind reader.

The premise of your question, as I read it is, what why is the RMBP better than the MBP. And the short answer is, it's not better, it's different. Each model has it's advantages and disadvantages, and the reason one buys one of the other is going to vary with each individuals needs. However, the tone of your question is more like "why in the hell would anyone buy a RMBP." If that's not what you mean, OK, but then write what you mean to say.

That wasn't the premise of my question but it's becoming unfortunately clear to me that the way I worded it left it open to little other interpretation. You actually more or less nailed my intended premise when you said, "...it's not better, it's different." The intent of this thread was to explore that difference. And I think that's a fair interpretation of my original question:

What will a Retina MBP allow you to do better than a non-Retina would?

Liken this, if you will, to someone asking in 2010, "What does an iPad allow you to do better than an iPhone?"

Or if that's too wide a semantic gap for you to bridge, then liken it instead to someone asking more recently, "What does a Retina iPad allow you to do better than an iPad 2?"

Both legitimate questions I think. And neither one is stupid or offensive. A lot of times the advantages of one product over another are so instinctually obvious that we never take time to enumerate them. Taking the time to do just so seems like a favor to the entire Apple user community.

But, sadly, some folks seem to interpret these kind of questions as some sort of indictment of their personal belief system. But that kind of reaction is out of my control and I'm finished dealing with any instance of such.

My lesson learned from this is that I'll obviously need to be more careful with my verbiage from now as not to obscure my intent.

EDIT: Case in point, here's a very similar post with slightly different wording and no one is giving the TC a fraction of the crap that I got for this post:

Your point was that people only update for profit. Completely false.

MR makes its profit from ads. Yet still updated this site for Retina. That just disproves your point right there.

Also the fact that you keep bringing up how people shouldn't update to new technology is pathetic. If everybody followed your logic of never updating, then technology would never advance. Everything you have said is wrong. Do yourself a favor and just stop now before you make yourself look even worse.

I Wonder why MR updated to Retina, oh cause RMBP users would use it. You think WalMart, Target, BestBuy or any major retailer cares what screen people use right now? not at all. Since PC manufactures still hold the majority of the market, it will stay that way until retina screen market will be saturated. Here is a piece from a NYT article about the iPad screen. It is relevant to my argument.

"Springbox, a digital design agency that makes both Web sites and apps for clients, is optimizing its iPad apps to suit the new retina display but holding off on upgrading its Web sites, according to Tom Hudson, director of technology at the company. He said Springbox probably would not consider scaling up its Web sites for higher-resolution iPads unless they made up at least 20 percent of the overall market."

Another

"Blue Fountain Media, another design firm, said the majority of its clients were not planning to upgrade their images in light of the new iPad. Gabriel Shaoolian, chief executive of Blue Fountain Media, said that for most of its clients, it wouldn’t be worth the trouble to upgrade."

You, my dear friend will be buying a brand new airplane while the airport is being built. However, people do upgrade technology and that I don't argue. And the more people will buy as time goes on. Once the markets are totally sautrated, then you will see "retina ready." Technology will improve but it's going to be a while before companies actually decide to improve their websites to fit such a small piece of the market right now. But with Apple's massive margins, as a stockholder I love the idea of you buying one. A matter of fact buy 10! :)

Let me quote myself since you obviously have trouble understanding simple concepts.

I don't think you understand that Apple is pushing new technology. If there was no resistance to the new technology, they wouldn't use the word "push."

Please, do yourself a favor and grow up. Maybe then you won't embarrass yourself every time you post a comment.

But of course, you will undoubtedly do so again very soon. So go ahead, be predictable...

simply put, it's like going from SD to HD TV. you can live without it but it's really enjoyable.

Just to say that you have the newest toy. It's just a sharper image is all that most websites aren't "retina ready" nor do many App developers make apps that are "retina ready" it will be a WHILE. Save your $$

It's kind of like buying a brand new train ticket but they are building the tracks. It will come to your town soon!

Have to say I've reached the same conclusion. Having seen the awful text quality in apps like Word and Pages, I just think this technology isn't a good fit for a "pro" machine at the present time.

Judging by the way the rest of the industry will copy what Apple does, in 6 months we will be seeing the flood of "Macbook Pro Retina Killers" and all the other brands will be jumping on the high resolution bandwagon.

From there, more and more websites and applications will be updated to take advantage of the new high resolution capabilities.

For now, I think there is not much of a business case unless you are an early adopter and simply enjoy it for having the latest and greatest. I'm a bit in that camp and I'm still torn on whether to take the leap now or wait a year. Upon hearing all of the scaling issues, I'm now more inclined to wait.

I just don't get it..... Many of the persons (not talking on this post) that are complaining about the user upgradeability of the laptop, is changing from the last year model... That is not a proof that you DON'T have the NEED to replace any part in your computer? Because is more likely you are going to buy a new one when its out??
I understand it coming from someone that actually has the need of using the computer for a long period, but for the rest? That change every year... Is a no sense thing, and Apple knows it...

Yeah cause i see them running to their computers and CEOs calling their web design team to spend money on updating their websites just for a few RMBP owners. I say give it at least 2 years for the entire web to be updated.

Made up number alert

MR is one of the biggest apple fan sites. I think I know why they updated their site.

As for the rest of the web space , it's not economical for them to update their sites just cause apple has one machine with a new display. Sites are written based on companies standards and guidelines, and most of these are around supported browsers and accessibility, the retina display is a non event for websites, sure chrome was fast to update, but hey it's google and guess what they make thier money just like MR from ads revenue.

If the industry reacted everytime new tech came out, the code bases for sites would be an utter mess!

Next time your in an apple store also check out the hundreds of thunderbolt accessories on offer.....owww wait.... The industry forgot to budge on that one too ;)

Ugh I can't talk business with you. I don't have special education training.

I'm trying to understand the practicality of the Retina MBP. To those of you who bought one, can you please answer me this question:

What will a Retina MBP allow you to do better than a non-Retina would?

Just to be extravagant, just to have the best technology out. (cuz you can...)

its cheaper than the maxed out Pro, plus it's thinner, and has better air ventilation (not sure if this is a deal breaker yet*)

And it also has 2x thunderbolt + and HDMI which will be awesome when more thunderbolt docking stations and such will emerge.
