I am so tired of all these negative threads talking about how the Ultra can't actually be used to climb Everest or whatever. But instead of complaining (other than I just did), I figured I would start a positive thread about what AWU owners are actually excited to use their watch for.

Personally, I'm still on the fence. But if I do get one I think it will be great for skiing. Being able to use it with gloves will be greatly appreciated, and the longer battery life means that I'll be able to leave the workout running all day and not have to fuss with it. Sadly, whether I actually get to hit the slopes this season is still in question, since I'm still recovering from a torn Achilles. Just now starting to do some light impact drills will small hopping, so there's a chance I would be able to go around March.

I will use it everyday as a replacement for my SS AW5 and of course in the gym and some outdoor activities (skiing, hiking, swimming…). Not really extreme conditions…

I posted this list in another thread, but it's relevant to this one as well. Here are several things that illustrate why the Ulta is better when considering for skiing:
  • All day activity tracking
  • Improved GPS to make your activity tracking just that much more accurate
  • Cellular connection to stay in touch with family and friends while on the slopes
  • Ability to call for help if you fall and get hurt, or wander off the run and get a bit lost
  • Better microphones so you can actually be heard while sitting on a chair lift in windy conditions
  • Ability to access resort maps
  • Easier to use while wearing gloves
  • Confidence that your battery will last even while enjoying an après ski cocktail
  • Still have enough battery left to do some night skiing if you're at a resort setup for that
  • Do ALL of this while leaving your phone behind entirely and not have to worry about battery life for a full day of skiing
  • Detect if I get into a crash going to/from the slopes because some jerkwad decided it was a good idea to go down a mountain pass at 80MPH in a blizzard because "MUST GET FIRST CHAIR!"
Keep in mind that this list is meant to be considered in totality. While the Series 8 can do most of these things, the Ultra is better when you consider wanting to do ALL of them on a single charge without the need to constantly wonder if your battery is going to die before the end of the day.

Running, it will hopefully replace my Garmins 🤷🏽‍♂️ So far my Garmins have been my primary running watches, Garmin on left wrist and AW7 on my right 🙈 I hope the Ultra will mature and get even more possibilities to make a structured workout.
For example this workout was difficult to program on my AW:
Warm up - 2x(8 min@10k, 90s rec), 6x(2mins@3k, 60s) - cool down.

As far as I know, Apple did not say explicitly how long battery lasts while in sport tracking mode, but hopefully this is the first Apple Watch with enough battery capacity for a 4-6 hour bike ride. That is one thing I just could not do with my Series 0 and Series 4.

I also go open circuit scuba diving occasionally. Next time will be in Egypt mid. October. I hope the Oceanic+ App will be released until then. I cannot wait to try diving with a dive computer I am familiar with.

Every day wear, but will be my free-diving watch, track my kayak paddles as well as Paddleboard (live on a salt water waterway). Exercise tracker (what the current watch is also used for), and every other Apple Watch use.

I currently use a 4 and 5 with auto-switching.

AWU will replace the 4 - and will transfer the cellular from the 5 to AWU.

While I don't have AWU in hand - my S5 is white Ceramic and I think is a sexier looking watch so I still use that for when I want to look... nicer lol.

But AWU will take over as sleep tracker, hiking tracker (With or without phone using WorkOutDoors), gym tracker (on cellular with Apple Music) and all my off-road Jeep adventures.

But one of the things I use most... All over the world with my AW... is... Camera shutter for my iPhone! So it will take over that most of the time now too :)

Oh. And the improved GPS is huge for me as I spend 10 days/month in Manhattan and I'm sure it will be better than my iPhone now for routing and finding subway entrances.

IF THE BATTERY life was not better than regular AW I would NOT have bought it. I love that' it's Ti but using AW on cellular with phone at home while tracking hikes using maps on screen drains the battery in a huge way...

Overall - I'm feeling positive about it :)

Started w/ an S4, now an S7 (both GPS) worn daily & depending on which day the 7 also sees road bike wear, lap swimming or competitive pistol matches/drills with weekly stage building so no doubt the Ultra will be replacing the 7 to a large extent.

The 60 hours they reported was tracking a workout for 15 hours, sleep tracking for 15 hours and some app usage. Do you should easily get a 4-6 hour bike ride.

Replacing my SS S6, and looking forward to 1) the new design. I like big bracelets. 😅, and 2) the bevy of new features alongside the faster chipset!

Main reason is: Sports. Running my next Trail Ultra with Dual GPS without wearing my phone. I sold my Garmin because they have no offer for this use case.

Just like I do for my normal watch. Daily use, wear it to the gym, etc. I like how it looks. Hopefully I like the size.

I’m thinking the battery life will make this a great travel watch. Whenever I’m out and about all day on a trip, I have to think about my watch battery life. It will be nice to be free from that.
