Daily normal use replacing my SS S5. Looking forward to the new design mostly. But a bit scared of the Ti alloy combined with squared off design and faster dinks happening both on the screen sides and crown protection protuberance. My SS is like brand new after 3 years of service. Just polished it once or twice with cap cod.

I want to get used to not carrying a phone more often. The ultra will help me with that and Battery life is super important. I’m curious what the impact will be when streaming audio. I hope it’s last 10 hrs streaming.

My series 5 you have to manage the battery when I use cellular without my phone. It’s doable but you have to manage it to make it last.

What really sold me was ....

Titanium case .... I have a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and titanium makes a huge different in weight.

The Bulk ..... I like beefy watches.

Display is recessed slightly below the bezel

Battery life has much improved over previous AWs.

I'm coming from a Series 5, so the upgrade will be huge for me.

Up to 2000 nits brightness when needed.

I bought the Apple Watch Series 4 (non cellular) following a heart attack.

Since then I have run 2500km up to half marathon distance. I usually run without my phone and my wife hates it because if anything happens I wouldn’t be able to contact anyone. I’m excited by the new running metrics.

I cycle commute to work twice a week and use my bike for local trips whenever I can. I don’t have a bike computer at the moment so I’ll try the Ultra in this role, but I suspect I’ll need to buy a dedicated computer eventually.

I am starting to get into triathlons so the Ultra sounds ideal for this. Swimming drills are a pain to programme at the moment. I think the extra external button will be super useful in all those activities as well as the multi sport tracking.

I’m setting up a training plan in Training Peaks and the Watch will track a lot of metrics to use in there.

I also hike and do overnight wild camps, so the cellular, longer battery life, maps with breadcrumb trails, etc should all be useful. I wish the emergency satellite messages had come to the Ultra and worked in the UK.

I want to sleep track more often and I expect the Ultra will make this easier with its battery life but I worry about the bulk of it in bed.

My series 4 is getting long in the tooth and I’ll get a number of benefits such as improved battery life, always on display, compass, faster charging, etc.

Before the Ultra was announced I was seriously looking at Garmins, Suuntos, and other dedicated fitness watches. I wouldn’t have liked to give up the Apple Watch smartwatch features like Apple Pay, Apple Music, Wallet, connection with reminders, controlling stuff like HomePods, etc. I use my phone too much and would really like to ditch it more often and rely on the Watch for more functions if I can.

I'm runner. I already thinking about change my Watch S6 to Epix 2 back in February. But even I run 5 days a week over one hour per run I still use my AW for other things than sport, where Epix not fits my needs. So I waited for Ultra.
Now I will have more accurate GPS and better battery life - I still planning charge every night.

Bravo! I also need to get back to sport!

I will use my Ultra like my Series 7 and not worry about what others think about it. My first 7 leaked after washing it under the faucet, Apple replaced but left me with less confidence on water intrusion. I will not have to worry anymore. I will be able to swim the the bottom of the 14 foot deep pool with no worries. I will enjoy the larger flat screen and larger battery.

I ordered one just to play with it but I’m thinking I’ll probably keep it now, really just for the battery life. I’ve just been out and ran 10 miles using Work Outdoors for navigation and that‘s knocked my S7 battery from 96% to 57%. As usual, Audible wouldn’t work on the watch but if it had done that’d have been going too which would’ve impacted the battery further.

Apple are selling this Watch on the basis it’ll last an Ironman. I do Ironman (usually about 12 hours) and I can’t see a watch with double the capacity of my present one lasting through a race - but the low power mode that’s coming later in the year may change that. Nevertheless I still fully expect to be using Garmin too once I’ve got an Ultra.

I train for and run a few marathons a year and have been using a Garmin/Apple Watch combination for years. I was hoping the Ultra would get me down to one watch but I’m disappointed with the battery life claims. If Garmin can squeeze 5-6 days from the Epix, I‘m not sure that 36 hours is the upgrade that it’s being made out to be.

Given that, and the lack of all the performance and recovery metrics Garmin provides, I’m not sold on the Ultra as a Garmin replacement for my use case.

You can compare it more to the low power mode. Because the Garmin has no LTE. 60h is your friend against 5-6 days

The Apple Watch Ultra will replace my Garmin Fenix 3. I am looking forward to heart rate, which I have been missing for years (I do not like chest strap).

I will use the Ultra for training for my next Ultra Trail (60 KM) and use it for my Gravel Rides.

And as a daily watch for music, Apple Pay, Shopping and so on.

I share your concern. My black SS S3 looks perfect after 5 years of use.

It's not exactly the same b/c I believe low power mode disables AOD, which isn't the case with the 5-6 days for the Epix. But I'll be curious to see what battery life is like on the Ultra when disabling LTE. (Disabling AOD is a nonstarter for me.)

I remember a similar conversation when Apple Watch version one came out. I bought it on release day knowing that some people would think that it didn’t look appropriate for business attire (I’m now a 53-year-old professional woman). Come to think of it, when AirPods first came out, I’m sure that most people thought they looked weird, too.

I didn’t care what any of those people thought back then, and I certainly don’t care what anybody thinks now when my Ultra comes in Friday. All that matters is whether or not I’ll like it.

So, yeah, I’ll use it for a few 5/10ks and hiking here and there, but mostly I’m gonna use it every day for everything.

Mountain biking and hiking in the mountains. But to be honest, it will be worth it if it helps back track me out of a shopping mall. I hate those places. I am always loosing my way!

I am so tired of all these negative threads talking about how the Ultra can't actually be used to climb Everest or whatever. But instead of complaining (other than I just did), I figured I would start a positive thread about what AWU owners are actually excited to use their watch for.

Personally, I'm still on the fence. But if I do get one I think it will be great for skiing. Being able to use it with gloves will be greatly appreciated, and the longer battery life means that I'll be able to leave the workout running all day and not have to fuss with it. Sadly, whether I actually get to hit the slopes this season is still in question, since I'm still recovering from a torn Achilles. Just now starting to do some light impact drills will small hopping, so there's a chance I would be able to go around March.

I'm going to use it as the Apple Watch I use 80% of the time, mainly for the additional battery life and looks. The reality is aside from divers (and the associated depth sensor) there is almost no difference capability wise between the Ultra and the Series 8... it's about durability, additional battery life, and oh... a siren. The dual band GPS is nice, but its a VERY, VERY slight difference only noticeable in the worst downtown city environments based on how similar systems have performed on recent Garmin watches.

People somehow think the Ultra can "do" more. It really can't for the most part. It just does the same things with a different style and with less battery consequences.

Apparently, the Ultra is the only way to get a monochromatic watch face that’s useful at night now that Apple borked the Modular face, so I might be buying an Ultra just so that I can get the same functionality for sleeping that I had *checks notes* two weeks ago with my S7.

Just use it like a normal Apple Watch and enjoy the benefit of not needing to recharge that often.

exactly. even my current 45mm, GPS-only, S7 sometimes is very low on power if I've had a long day, maybe did a 30-45 min GPS tracked workout etc. to the point I'm concerned it won't make it. I've even had sometimes where I have to go power save or it won't. Then sometimes it finished with 40%. Who knows but I always have to "think about it."

my hope is my Ultra allows me to have cellular, all tracking (listening for sounds from car crashes to hand washing), and any regular workout I do and just simply NEVER worry about battery in a single day. I just want to do ANY normal (if I do a marathon or something, that is different) day with any and all features turned on and never, ever, worry about making it to the end of the day full stop. I'll still charge daily.

This is a great summary. I've been kind of surprised at people thinking the Ultra is such a massive upgrade, when in reality it just doesn't do that much more than a regular Apple Watch, and even uses the same chip as the Series 8.

Personally, I'd want it most for the look and the increased battery. I love the way it looks, but I'm not sure my wrist is large enough to pull it off. We'll see.
