Took to wandering through Youtube and listening to some suggestions and a few favourites.

I really like Rob Thomas' voice, as a member of Matchbox Twenty or solo with Santana. Love both of these.

This one has two of my favourite singers. Kacey Musgraves and Willie Nelson. This one pops up on my playlists on my iPhone quite often.

One of my favourite movies from the 80's is "Streets of Fire", a Rock n' Roll Fable. It had a great soundtrack (with good lip syncing by the actors) and starred a lot of people who were going to become big stars. I Still like this movie and the soundtrack.

IMHO, some of the most overrated music, and musician, in my lifetime.

No problem. I think he’s a pretty darned talented musician (drums and guitar) and singer. It works for me but understand not for everyone. I’m a Minnesota guy (now) and never cared for Prince whatsoever and only like a few songs by Dylan. I keep that to myself though. Haha.

ha!

I like both of those guys.

Prince was very self indulgent and I only like a few of his songs. I hated his guitar solos.

What about "Money Don't Matter 2 Night"?

While much of the oeuvre of Prince meant little to me, I do like this track; in fact, these posts have just prompted me to listen to it.

Actually, it was on an older iPod of mine (RIP, a beloved iPod that has since shuffled off this mortal coil), but, inexplicably, I have no idea where the CD from which I 'ripped' that track is (Prince's Greatest Hits), is now.

I don’t dislike Prince I just wasn’t moved by his stuff. I just listened to Money Don’t Matter Tonight. I’ve never heard it before. Honest. Was it a hit? It’s not a track I care for. I am of the opinion it lacks tonal color to be distinct or interesting. He was certainly talented and I understand how people love(d) him.

Lacking tonal colour, agreed, but I liked the lyrics.

Pardon the omnibus...

The "White" album by The Beatles.

Have you checked out the new release? I’ve listened to the new stereo mix a few times but have saved the Esher Demos (which I know well from poor bootleg sources), the 5.1 mix, and (most of) the studio sessions for later. The Super Deluxe book is a marvel.

Soundtrack (2008) to Metropolis

How is that? I know there are several scores for that film. A few years ago I saw the film at the AFI Silver with a live three piece (?) “orchestra.” I confess I was more transfixed at the deftly synced performance than the quality of their music. Not sure which score I heard when watching on Blu-ray but I’ve avoided Morordor’s ‘80s synth score.

R.E.M on the way to work this morning.

Just this morning I listened to the first disc in the new BBC box set. Personally, the 2-CD version was probably all I needed but since they are in my pantheon of favorite bands I felt compelled to tithe generously. If nothing else I want to keep Michael Stipe able to afford razors and clippers. The beard made me sad.

Can’t say I’m a huge fan of his music, though I try periodically to re-evaluate and have come to enjoy scattered songs. I’m also not a big fan of solos yet, being a Beatles fan (not known for the virtuosic solos) I can’t not love what he does with this White Album song in its last couple minutes.

Bonus points that it features two Wilburys, whose song “Dirty World” was inspired by Prince. R.E.M. (also not synonymous with solos) recorded parts of a few seminal albums at his Paisley Park, too.

My own listening the last few weeks has been all over the map. I must say I’ve particularly enjoyed the track below. It’s musical nods to The Beach Boys aren’t as on the nose as R.E.M.’s sentimental pastiche “At My Most Beautiful” but it is as clear as its debt to prime Bowie.

I quite enjoy a lot. I like to listen to it sometimes when I'm either reading or working on my book or other work. I also enjoy that '80s synth music as well, but I'm not sure I heard the one you're referencing or not.

If you have recommendations for good 80s (and 90s) synth music, I am all ears.
Well, this could turn into a fascinating discussion. I say that because the genre of 80s/90s synth seems rather mushy to me when I explore it. It all depends on how one defines it. Are you talking about actual 80s music that incorporated synthesizers in the music, such as Michael Jackson's Bad or Thriller albums? Perhaps New Order's Blue Monday, Pet Shop Boys Its a Sin, Soft Cells Tainted Love and so on.

Or could we be talking about synthwave which is more of a retro style of more or less fully synthesized music, more along the lines of Daft Punk's earlier days and other lessor known artists which started in the Internet underground of the early 2000's, such as Scandroid, VHS Dreams and Betamaxx? Collectively known more as Outrun, which has a great subreddit r/outrun

It's a wide topic and an interesting one, too.

Scandroid is one of my favorites and he's right here in my area, Detroit, too. Here are a couple of his covers of Michael Jackson and Tears for Fears that I really enjoy.

Thriller
Shout

Great post, and thank you for it.

Personally, I like instrumental music a lot, thus, this means I'm also talking about synth music such as the sort of stuff composed by Vangelis (he composed the music for the TV series Cosmos, with Carl Sagan, which blew my mind when I first saw it), and Jan Hammer (who composed the theme music for the TV show Miami Vice).

Among others.

Don’t forget the blade runner theme as well. But Vangelis is pure genius.

I love that style as well. If you can, look up that album I posted a page or two back with the Metropolis 2008 soundtrack; its amazing.

Scandroid has a self titled album with a separate instrumental album as well. You can listen to it here and buy the album as well, though some of his stuff is digital download only, while others are offered on CD. But you can download the FLAC version and burn it to disc too.

If you start exploring that r/outrun subreddit you'll find a lot of instrumental music in full synth.
