Gettin' ready for the Fourth of July... hauling out stuff by American composers, including some works by William Grant Still (1895-1978). The album pictured below with John Jeter conducting the Fort Smith Symphony has as its first track a tribute to African-American soldiers who fought in WWII. His Afro American Symphony and the symphonic poem Africa are also on this album. He was a prolific composer and his opera Troubled Island was the first American one ever performed by the New York City Opera. I had recently ordered a book about his operas (he composed eight of them) that I'm looking forward to reading when it arrives, and it occurred to me to start rounding up some of his and other American composers' music to play over the long weekend coming up. It's nice when the holiday falls on a Thursday, a lot of people get the Friday off as well so it's a complete blowout around here with people coming up from the city to party at seasonal residents' places for what's practically a mini-vacation.

Another album taken up for some action during the holiday is pictured below, with performances by the Berlin Philharmonic, isn't all by USA composers, but has some nice Samuel Barber and Elliott Carter on it, plus Kazimierz Machala's fun American Folk Suite... and is otherwise also exemplary of exactly what it says it is,,,, Summer Music.

I've been listening to a whole lot of New Order today. Great band, and although I generally prefer the 80's stuff, Get Ready is a pretty great album.

Terrific music from that era.

Roadgame - Kavinsky
Digging the 80s, retro, techno, cyberpunk sound. Night cruising music.

Thanks for sharing; I hadn't come across this music before - wonderful.

Is there an album you can recommend?
