Syd Barrett's first solo album...

First track Terrapin...

And next up, Dive In from Dave Matthews Band album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. This was the first album released after LeRoi Moore passed away. It's to weep and laugh and admire Dave's art if you bought the CD, he drew something for every track, not just the cover, on which he has drawn LeRoi Moore supervising doings on a Latin Quarter street during Carnival in New Orleans. Moore died during preproduction of this album; Jeff Coffin's playing on some of the album's tracks. Best review I ever read of this album is the one in RollingStone. From the wrap:

Big Whiskey, though, is a lot like a New Orleans funeral parade — mourning and zest balled into big, brawny music. “We’ll be drinking big whiskey while we dance and sing,” Matthews crows in “Why I Am.” “And when my story ends, it’s gonna end with him/Heaven or hell/I’m going down with the GrooGrux King.” I’m betting on heaven — and that Moore will be quietly waiting for him.

Note: Video was put up by Sony, a US rights holder; it may not be playable elsewhere depending on licensing arrangements.

Having clicked on the link, I have just been informed: "Video unavailable: This video is not available."

However, I love that New Orleans sound.

best. cover. ever. of No Surrender.

Wow, yeah... Springsteen himself would have to love that cover. Such a beautiful song; haven't heard one of his renditions or covers either more than a few times since 2004. Thank you for putting that one up.

John Kerry's 2004 campaign used it as a theme

One of the covers I did hear about though was a 1000-musician go at it in Catalan in the No Surrender festival in the summer of 2017. More than one way to do that song and Springsteen also had presented it differently depending on venue or recording.

We busted out of class had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes and follow your dreams down

We made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Now young faces grow sad and old and hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home across the open yards
Well maybe we could cut someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars

Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in the stormy night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath peaceful skies in my lover's bed
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head

Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in the stormy night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

No retreat, baby, no surrender

A groundbreaker. Released 50 years ago this month in UK. Recorded in one day (a 12 hour session) in October 1969.

One of the best albums ever recorded. And one of the really important albums that shaped my musical tastes for years to come when I first heard it.

This is an interesting article about the creation of the cover art.
