Ever since I found out yesterday that Ryuichi Sakamoto had passed away, I've been listening to his greatest hits non-stop. While coding and sipping on a Heineken, his tunes have been a constant presence in my playlist. But today, it's hitting me extra hard and I'm feeling really down about it.

If memory serves, - and this was the first time I had come across his haunting music - he wrote the soundtrack to "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence", which is excellent, and which I have long loved.

Here's another Dave McKenna set, with How High the Moon/Ornithology (the contrafact) - starts at around 1:06:20

This whole set is really good (as is the other one I posted awhile ago), so that's what I'm listening to this afternoon/evening. I haven't done many duo/solo gigs this past month, where the left-hand walking bass is crucial (because I've been so busy with other things), but always a good idea to keep listening and practicing/playing along with it! In plus, I'm gonna be doing a set at a school "function" two Thursdays from now (can't really call it that because it's not that fancy), where I think it'd be appropriate to do a "Moon" medley of sorts like McKenna does.

Faith no More - The Real Thing, super clean recording, no boost. It's a master, VU metre's stay out the red, the amp doesn't clip at 100/120.

Be rude not to LOL...

This is a REALLY interesting track. It looks like it was done in 1970, but to me, it seems much older than that, like maybe from the 50s or something:

EDIT: I'm looking at other tracks from the same label, and they all say 1970 as the release year. I wonder if that's just what all of them say, and they vary in terms of the actual recording date. That's something I should dig into.

EDIT #2 - Actually, tracks such as "Capital City" show 1976 as the release date—so clearly not all of them are "from" 1970.

Anyone else know about the KPM label/what the deal is here? I know it's "library music" to be used in low budget films, but that's about all I know.

EDIT #3 - looks like KPM is the British label, while APM is the American label, or was, I don't know if it exists anymore.

If you haven't already seen (Discogs is a great place to find out info about labels, artists, releases, production details, and editions. Want to know what the runout groove on the original issue of Johnny Griffin/A Blowing Session says? Discogs got it!):

Boy, it's been a minute since I've heard this, that's for sure. I always forget how great this record is until I listen to it!

Wait a minute, what is a gravelly voiced rocker doing on your playlist, Mr/Ms/Mx Village Vanguard?

I won't post the link, because I'm listening to the theme song from a TV show that I believe aired from the 60s through the 90s, or maybe even the 2000s, that has a pretty negative connotation/reputation. It's a good song though. I just don't want to get in trouble for posting the link though... Anyway, here's something by the same composer though, that I also like:

You might recognize the name—I posted another thing of his a few days ago. Different decade though I think.
