Sorry I took so long to respond but I wanted to get a little more in depth that just "It's cool" or "It sucks".
In 1990, I was in 6th grade when I got my hands on a dub (yes, that means cassette tape for you youngin's in the crowd

) of Alters of Madness and it just blew my mind. I have been a fan for over 20 years now, I have seen, met, and chatted with these guys many times over the years. I must say that while this new album is very different and experimental, it isn't as bad as
the interwebs may lead you to believe.
I admit that many of the songs may leave some death metal purists a little jaded. There are some weird things going on with this one, there is a real industrial feel in some parts? There are a lot of "moody" samples and almost gothic chanting parts with electronica influence? Songs about an alien invasion? All of this sound pretty scary when we are discussing one of the pioneers on the Florida Death Metal scene of the early nineties, right?
But then Morbid Angel has never played by the rules.

I guess, while this album is surprising direction, and a little unexpected for me. I refuse to say it's a bad album, who's to say what Morbid Angel should or shouldn't do. It's definitely pushing the limits, but is that really all that bad? I, for one, do not want to listen to the same rehashed riffs and blast beats album after album.
It's not my favorite Morbid Angel album (it might not even be in my top five

) but I stand by my boys.
(sad to see Pete missing on this one, had back surgery last year I guess

)
