There's something wrong here, because that's not how it's supposed to work. It should show the stats without having to tap. Even without always on display, raising your wrist should show the workout stats. That's how it has worked since the original watch.
Sounds like it's a third party workout app, that haven't been updated for AoD

One thing I hope they fix is the black screen you get during a workout. I have the display set to "always on", but when Im in the middle of a workout all I get is the digital clock at the top. I have to tap the screen to see my time/distance/heart rate stats. Why not have them on the screen all the time?

I only do the "time to walk" workouts, but I imagine it's a pain having to tap the screen during a run.
That’s probably a bug, I’ve experienced that too several beta updates ago. And yes it was annoying as hell during a run 🙂 Try getting the latest available update.

Seconded. That’s never happened to me, though I use the built in work out apps.

Turns out I was just being a bit dopey... you have to have 'raise to wake' switched on. its working all right now, cheers

answer: a way to easily set up with a Mac computer/laptop and without ever needing an iPhone for anything...

I have the ultra. In order to get my fitness and recovery stats. I need five different apps. They need to make it like Garmin so everything is in one app. It is too fragmented the way it is now.
Could you share the apps you are using?

And if they do that people/media will complain that Apple obsoletes the small developers’ apps (like those you use right now).

True. Which is why I am headed back to Garmin even though I like Apple better, my fitness takes priority.
This is why I flip back and forth between the two. I really like the workout/training/recovery integration in Garmin Connect, and none of the AW alternatives bundle it all together.

That being said, Apple Pay is more reliable for me than Garmin Pay, and Siri on my watch works well for me.

Thank you for sharing.

The problem is that third party apps can’t control the sensors, and the default sensor settings don’t provide adequate measurements to be able to properly calculate metrics such as load and recovery. If you want meaningful training data you’ll have to resort to other devices for now (Garmin, Whoop, Oura, Polar, etc).

Apple only does major updates yearly so it isn't a surprise. Sport Watch fitness reviewers have been invited to WWDC so its likely WatchOS 10 will have interesting updates for Ultra...

Disappointing update. I guess that’s good news for Garmin with their new Epix Pro series. Apple is not closing any gaps with this update. I really expected more for athletes this year.

I wouldn't say Smart Stack is the most exciting thing but up to now I've kept the old Siri watch face a couple of swipes over because it does just this. It will be nice to have exactly the same feature just by turning the crown :)

Totally agree. I just ordered the Garmin Epix 2 pro and will put my AWU in my drawer. Very disappointing.

Majority of the watch faces are terrible on the Ultra’s non rounded display. Bummed there’s no improvements on that.

Exactly

1. TRAILMAPS for Ultra.
2. Bluetooth support of bike cadence sensors and power meters.
3. AppleFitness+ support for hardware from major manufacturers (treadmills, spin bikes etc.)
4. A refreshed UI for the Apple Watch that feels "new"... I wish I could tell you what I mean by that but like Steve Jobs said it up to Apple to show users what they want, not have them tell Apple.
5. Refreshed watch faces that really take advantage of all the space the screen gives them.
6. I'd love health and fitness coaching but the rumor is that is coming in 2024 with WatchOS 11 and iOS 18.
7. Use the skin temp sensor for more than cycle tracking... alert for potential fevers etc.
8. Fully automated sleep detection... no more of this crazy setting sleep windows... I want the feature to detect sleep AND naps and record it ALL... with ZERO interaction on my part. Little ole Fitbit was doing this near perfectly many years ago and yet Apple still has a system that doesn't track naps and only tracks sleep if it falls in a window you have to preset... well my sleep "window" changes from day to day and I shouldn't have to remember to change it for my sleep to track!

So? How did I do?

1. Looks like we got it... maybe. I still question if the new list of trails / trailheads / and topo maps is enough if there isn't turn by turn routing or the ability to build our own trails. Still I call this a win.
2. We got it!
3. Seems we didn't get it, aside from the fact you can attach sensors to spin bikes etc. for use with the new bike features. Hopefully Apple Fitness+ workouts will show live cadence / speed / power from those sensors but they made no mention of it.
4. Seems we sort of got it. Watch faces look mostly the same but the new idea of seeing widgets with the scroll of the crown on any watch face seems a major UI change etc.
5. 2 new watch faces, no real changes to the others is a fail.
6. Didn't happen this year unless there is a September surprise. I do believe this is coming... NEXT YEAR.
7. Nothing. Disappointing use of the sensor which seems to be there mostly for marketing a difference between Series 7 & 8 more than doing anything useful.
8. Doesn't seem like they changed anything unless they didn't mention it. I don't know why Apple makes easy... hard sometimes.

Zones, athlytic , training today, gentlr streak and healthfit.

rumor from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg (well connected) is that Apple will introduce a paid health and fitness coaching service that will create inbuilt metrics like that, NEXT YEAR, 2024 with iOS 18 and WatchOS 11.

Yea but Garmin has tons and I mean tons of fitness metrics for free in Connect. I'm keeping my Ultra because it's a great smartwatch so IF Apple does create the metrics similar to Garmin I will come back to Apple. Right after the show, I ordered the Garmin Epix Pro.

no argument there for me. I *personally* still want to stay in the apple ecosystem so I make it work (although the Epix Pro is tempting) with my Ultra and I have to give some credit to Apple for making REAL strides in the fitness space on the watch in the last 2 years (I know it is playing catchup but many said Apple would NEVER do serious fitness metrics and just stay focused on casual runners etc.) Since I'm an "Apple One" customer (meaning I pay one lower fee but get ALL of the Apple services) I'm hopeful that whatever new service is introduced next year is part of that rather than an additional fee I have to pay.
