This thread quickly derailed from expectations into wishes.

Anyway,

64GB size
8MP camera
NFC chip
Micro USB port or adapter(really hope it's a port)
4G
CPU/RAM the same

No clue about iOS though, they've added all the fundamental updates in iOS4, books, ads... I hope they'll concentrate on improving the UI in iOS5, notifications, custom sms tones, etc...

I'm pretty sure Wifi-Direct will be supported.

Maybe free navigation like Android and 3G facetime?

-increased capaciy
-better camera
-longer battery life
-4G maybe..

How about...
  • World iPhone: pentaband GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA+
  • F--- the carriers. Sell it unlocked at $499 for 32GB, $599 for 64GB, $699 for 128GB. Let the carriers sell it with a subsidy if you want to get locked down for 2+ years.
  • Micro-USB sync/charge connector.
  • Notification LED. C'mon, guys!
  • RFID/NFC capability to be enabled by iOS/API.
  • iOS 5: Facial recognition API and security login.
  • iOS 5: New notification system with history.
  • iOS 5: Launch applications on schedule or push notification.
  • iOS 5: Landscape homescreen.
  • iOS 5: Shared user folder on device on on MobileMe/cloud that other apps can access.
  • iOS 5: Uploading from Safari.
  • Apple to buy Facebook or Twitter, fully integrate it into iOS.

You know that the Retina display has the highest resolution the average eye can notice? Even if you'd make the resolution bigger you wouldn't be able to see a difference.

I don't think there'll be a change in the resolution - They're too proud of their Retina display, why would Apple release a new "better" display just one year after the last one?

I won't be getting the 2011 iPhone. Got the iPhone 4 and I'll be waiting for the 2012 model.

But for the 2011 hardware:

  • *64GB
  • Black/White - even though I've always been more of a fan of black
  • Better camera front/back
  • RAM will stay the same, 512MB
  • CPU will stay the same
  • Better battery live

2011 Software:

  • Notifications - each time someone says that the notification system is good I get the feeling that they don't know what a good notification system is
  • Redesign in the UI. I agree it does work, but it's "ok". I think it's starting to look boring, and doesn't have the "Wow" effect it used to
  • Fix all the bugs, damn it. since iOs 4 I've been getting so many bugs that it's crazy. iOs 2 had no bugs, then there came a few in iOs 3 which were fixed in iOs 4, but there came a bunch of new, VERY annoying ones.

I guess it's all I can think of right now.

I think this is a extremely realistic list. I tend to think that the processor may change though. I'd like to believe that Apple will end up going dual core. They will certainly have a lot of competition that will.

CPU/RAM the same

You couldn't call that an improvement over the last one, if the most important part of the hardware is the same.

I guess we will see a Cortex A9 in the next iPhone. Not sure if it will be dual core though.

Here's mine:
1. Same processor & ram spec albeit smaller manufacturing process also equals smaller parts (inside)
2. Bigger battery. Higher capacity and longer battery life.
3. Even better software: better multi tasking etc.

You know that the Retina display has the highest resolution the average eye can notice? Even if you'd make the resolution bigger you wouldn't be able to see a difference.

First, I liked the rest of your list. And I agree that Apple is unlikely to do anything to the display this year. However...

"Retina" display is not the "highest" anything. It simply refers to a display where a person with average eyes can't see the pixels at a particular distance. In the case of the iPhone 4, that's 10-11" away. Have better eyes or move closer, and they can see the pixels again. (Or move further away, and you can use bigger pixels = less resolution = still "retina".)

You see, Apple was basing their definition on the standard "print quality" definition, which is 300dpi at 12" away. Of course, printers go far beyond that now, because many people can indeed notice the difference.

Let's talk realistically:

I don't think Apple is read to call it "iPhone 5", more like iPhone 4-something, iPhone 4S? Possibly?

A 7 MP camera on the rear and a 2 MP camera for FaceTime with improved Camera features.

Same Retina Display.

White or Black color to choose from.

iOS 5 for sure.

The possibility of adding a new stock app with iOS 5.

16 GB Black iPhone 4S or 32/64 GB White or Black iPhone 4S.

A new type of motion sensing capability.

Possible new antenna configuration, a minor tweak.

Slightly bigger battery.

More energy efficient A4 chip.

Slight design change, similar to that of the next generation iPad.

A new carrier, for sure.

Did I miss anything?

Exactly. It's incredibly expensive and time consuming to tool up for a new design and we just got the iPhone 4. Next year it ain't getting bigger, or skinnier. Whatever we get will be in the exact same shell....

Under normal circumstances you'd probably be correct, but I think Apple might have changed things this cycle to avoid more problems (or "problems", depending on your point of view) with the antenna. Thus, i think the major change will be the design of the antenna. I don't know much about the engineering involved, but I wonder if they'd try something truly different like a fractal antenna etched on the inside of the back cover. Mind you, I presume we'd start seeing indications of a wholesale redesign by now....

Whatever they do I hope it is good - I'm upgrading and giving my 3GS to the bairn.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

iPhone 4GS:
ARM Cortex-A9 SoC
768MB RAM
16GB, 64GB
8MP camera
Larger LED flash
Dual CDMA/GSM chip
NFC chip
Improved antenna
Slightly thinner

It's kind of ironic that on the heals of the iPhone 4 release that there's so much interest on what the next version will have.

I think, if Apple was thinking forward, rather than entrenching it's current design, that they'd have put most of these items in the iPhone 4.

I hope the iPhone devs take a peek at the competition next time around. They seem to be resting comfortably on past success.

There's this thing called competition that wasn't as intense when the iPhone first came out. Apple can't get by with just a couple minor upgrades, remember, unlike competitors, they bring out a new phone once a year, so the iPhone 5 has to stay competitive until summer 2012.

I think hardware wise we will likely see these changes.

1. A bump to 32/64 GB, they skipped a year upgrading storage, and prices, size constraints, and availability means 64 gigs should be coming.
2. Ram upgrade to 768 (Hopefully).
3. New design
4. The dual core A9 chip since Apple is all about battery life.
5. Better camera, I'm hoping they put image stabilization in it.

And for software.

1. A real notification system, finally!
2. Some big changes to the os.
3. The ability to respond to texts from anywhere just like jailbroken phones have been doing for years!

I'm sure there will be more software changes but I have no idea what they'll be.

With you on all counts. Good post.

Hardware
-Stronger Glass?
- Better Cameras
- More memory 32GB 64GB
- Faster???
- CDMA/GSM

Software is what there really going to fix up

What are you realistically expecting in the next iPhone?

For sure:

- 16/32/64GB
- hardware antenna fix
- iOS 5.0
- End AT&T exclusivity in US
- CDMA/GSM world chip in all new iPhones

Probably:

- upgraded cameras front and rear

Realistically that sounds legit. That's what I am assuming we will see.

All of the improvements in the post above, plus a bluetooth fix. Heck, if all they do is fix the bluetooth connection I'll get the new phone!

My realistic expectations:

- higher resolution display
- larger display
- cheaper
- biometric security
- credit card terminal

You call this realistic? Higher resolution display? Isn't 326 PPI enough? You must have incredible eyes to see pixels on an iPhone 4.
